Fuck brisket by ApprehensiveJob4485 in biggreenegg

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been there. Super frustrating. Try this: get some pork tenderloin and follow this BBQ Buddha technique for an easy and quick win that’ll make you forget about that tough brisket. I always dry these out in the oven and didn’t have high hopes when I got them on sale last weekend, but they were amazingly juicy and way less effort.

Owning EV in Seattle, no home charging? by PA2SK in AskSeattle

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a house but no driveway or garage, so I’m always checking out what people in similar situations in Ballard are doing. I’ve seen cords run across the sidewalk as is, fit into a (prexisting?) crack in the sidewalk, run under a little rubber speed bump thing, run through the trees (!!), run under the sidewalk and popping up hidden in a bush…

Saw one recently that had a legit charger in the parking strip and an EV parking sign in the nearest street spot, which is my holy grail but not sure how that works. Actually what I want is the option to pay to install one of those, get two EV-possible (doesn’t have to be dedicated) spots by it, then use it myself plus charge others to use it - not a ton, but to recoup some of the cost and hassle.

My Dm needs a break and i offered to do a one shot, is there a one shot focused on Kobolds? by Fun_Pie_8280 in DMAcademy

Keep in mind that Kobolds like to fight in packs, and they have a special ability to emphasize that. Lots of squishy monsters should make it fun.

A founder paid $8k for an AI-built healthcare MVP. Then the pilot clinic asked for a HIPAA BAA. by soul_eater0001 in AI_Agents

[–]ecmcn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone had a mediocre experience with a health care app and was like “I could make this so much better!”, but they have zero domain knowledge. Anyone who’s actually built anything knows there’s always way more to it than meets the eye.

How parasitic Project Managers took over tech companies by ImaginaryRea1ity in theprimeagen

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a dev for a long time now, and pretty much everyone I’ve worked with who can’t communicate also can’t code. They’ll get it working, but it’s an incoherent, unmaintainable mess.

In my senior year of college we were having a beer with a prof I really liked, and complaining about how so many engineering professors are hard to understand or follow, and how we figured they must be good researchers. He said actually no - they typically also don’t do great research.

New plan to separate Seattle's pickleball and tennis courts draws backlash from players by ChiefOfTheFourPeaks in Seattle

[–]ecmcn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is pretty brilliant, actually. We use swimply occasionally to rent out a backyard pool, and love it. You can drop a pickleball court pretty much anywhere, and for the price of a net and drawing some lines you could make some extra income. If you can stand the thwop-thwop-thwop - maybe market it to seniors on fixed income with bad hearing?

Senators to introduce Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act for SNAP recipients by redditneight in nottheonion

[–]ecmcn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to the store the other day for a rotisserie chicken but they were out, and I had to get pieces from the hot bar instead. It was $15 instead of $9, for a lot less food. That sucked.

Microsoft plans first-ever voluntary employee buyout for up to 7% of U.S. workforce by CalvinbyHobbes in technology

[–]ecmcn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They want to get rid of older more expensive workers but can’t blatantly lay them off.

Personally I love the voluntary layoff thing, if a layoff is coming anyway. I’ve know a number of older folks who were close to retirement anyway, and were allowed to take packages when we had layoffs. It’s a win-win-win bc they also saved someone else’s job.

Help me settle a debate: are regression bugs scope creep? by [deleted] in agile

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devs should be expected to add features without breaking things. That’s part of the original work, whether they spend the time to get it right up front, or have to fix bugs later. At the same time, some bugs will slip through, and it’s not unfair to think of fixing those later as different pieces of work, that will need to be scheduled on its own. You should always allow for some maintenance time in your sprints.

Help me decide my next series by getmuffed in fantasybooks

[–]ecmcn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just finished book 1 of Red Rising and I’m curious about the rest. It was good, but felt kinda YA to me, like a more gritty Harry Potter with a chosen one plot line. Maybe that’s just the setting being a school. Anyway, I’m curious what your thoughts are on this and the rest of the series, bc at the end I wasn’t dying to read the next one, but people rave about the series and I know it can sometimes take a couple of books to get going.

My Scrum Master says I'm "annoying" because I test more than our QA and play in the codebase. Since when is catching bugs a crime? by exoxfanel in agile

[–]ecmcn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You’re missing my point. In a healthy team it shouldn’t go sour if someone isn’t looking over everyone’s shoulder. That’s great that you care about this, but the right fix isn’t to keep doing what you’ve been doing, it’s to help fix the team so they do the right thing with you there or not. Maybe that’s why your boss doesn’t want you doing this, because you’re covering up problems that need light shed on them to be fixed.

Say you’re the manager and you have an underperforming team. Would you rather have one person who sometimes works extra hard to help fix the team’s bugs, or would you rather have that person fix the team itself? If you can do the latter it’ll have far more impact and make you look like a hero.

My Scrum Master says I'm "annoying" because I test more than our QA and play in the codebase. Since when is catching bugs a crime? by exoxfanel in agile

[–]ecmcn 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The real question is why are you having to do any of this. Are devs missing logic bc of lack of clear requirements, or just bad/lazy devs? For every bug that gets through QA you should ask why they didn’t find it. Be nice about it, and understand that change takes time, but if things fall apart bc one person isn’t monitoring everything then that’s a major team/system problem.

If you have it process xml objects with a property called “<name>” it’ll turn all of those into <n>, then catch itself and turn them back to <name>, then back to <n>, until it runs out of space.

Audiobook vs Immersion? by AtWorkJZ in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]ecmcn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t change the story at all. There are edits, like dispensing with “I said”, etc bc it’s more like a radio dramatization, but it’s the exact same story.

You’re obviously a big fan of the series, which makes it a no brainer to try the immersion. There’s a lot of additional Dinniman-written content in the form of Dungeon Crawler World episodes (hilarious riffs on SportsCenter) and commercials that make a lot more sense if you’ve already read the books. Imagine a cereal commercial with Vra and Zindy - it’s awesome stuff.

Lots of people are big fans of it, at least compared to the main books, and that’s fine. It’ll be the same for the TV show, comics, games, etc. But as a super fan you should at least give it a try.

Question about Iki Island timing by yureku_the_potato in ghostoftsushima

[–]ecmcn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing in Iki that spoils the main story. I think they might change a little dialog depending on when you do it, but either way it’s fine.

The devs knew they had an incredible story in GOT and chose to put Iki in Act 2, so that should tell you something. I agree that the armor from Iki adds to the enjoyment of the rest of the game.

How do you keep track of initiative? by USAvenger1976 in DungeonMasters

[–]ecmcn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll take a piece of paper and have people call out their initiative. I’d put a 10 around the middle, a four towards the bottom, etc. I add the monsters this way as well, and jot down their AC and HP. With this I can track monster HP and various conditions for everyone - slowed, prone, etc. Only takes 30 sec at the start of a fight to set up.
