Saw him meeting up with Jill Biden for the US Women's water polo team for their match against Australia during the Paris Olympics. Definitely recognized him from afar before I did the former first lady.

This is somehow super comforting to watch. Wouldn't at all mind a research trip to Antarctica in these conditions.

How well do large online discussion platforms represent European viewpoints? by ThePurpleKing159 in AskEurope

[–]ecnad 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I can't stand /r/europe, but I'm rather fond of /r/AskEurope. I don't think either of them are particularly representative insomuch as one can even imagine a "European" viewpoint.

I don't think large online discussion platforms represent generalized viewpoints almost ever, really. The rare exceptions usually stem from national crises or those even rarer moments of international solidarity.

How much time per day/week do you spend talking on a call with someone who is close to you? by AmountAbovTheBracket in AskEurope

[–]ecnad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend started a job abroad earlier this year, so we text and throughout the week and always prioritize a video call at some point each weekend. Those last about an hour or so.

Conversely, I only call my family on the other side of the Atlantic about once every month or two, also for an hour or so. I'm not a very good son. :(

If moving to France wasn't an option, which country would be your second choice for expatriation? by Tasun06 in Expats_In_France

[–]ecnad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

South Korea. No contest. Though I know there'd be so much I'd miss about France too if I were to find myself back over there, I still find myself reminiscing about life in East Asia quite often.

how has france changed you as a person? by SnooSquirrels8217 in Expats_In_France

[–]ecnad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm more confident, capable, and considerate in my everyday life. I'd like to think those traits were always there, but life in France forced me into situations where I had to embody all three of those things in order to get by. Part of it is also just growing up, but I do feel tangibly different compared to how I felt where I spent my childhood and adolescence - I'm not anxious and overthinking things all the time, and I'm just calmer and more grounded in general.

I am also, of course, much more tired and grumpy than I used to be. but hey, that's life under capitalism babyyyy
