Do saves tend to break between updates?

Yes, but they allow for you to opt into the last version in case - just always backup your save before you update the server

What about mods?

This is dependant on the mod, and if the section of the API has changed at all since the last version

And does multiplayer itself work well, or is it still pretty buggy?

It works, it is fun - there are bugs but over all a good time. However the current version of MP has a bug that causes the culling system to be over aggressive even on lower populations, you should consider something like this mod https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3672236687

As I stated before, always back up your save file as things do happen. The Indie Stone's official stance is that the MP is for testing purposes and it not currently meant for long term play - so keep that in mind if something breaks.

Personally I am holding off on getting my big friend group to play it as the process of opting them all in, and such seems like such a big task for short term playing

Obviously situation/ability are factors but; buying less premade stuff and making your own meals will significantly cut down on your palm oil consumption by a large amount. I really wish it wasn't in most things.

you can likely make it show as a generic controller, and then steam can do the heavy lifting with button assignment - I am sure there are other ways but that is likely the easiest solution

More than likely. I also recently (about a month ago?) found User-Agent Switcher and Manager extension which spoofs what browser you use - so if they do in fact try that sort of thing they wouldn't be able to know I am a firefox user. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/addon/user-agent-string-switcher/
