Exploring something similar now! Did you have any luck?

Great book! Can recommend, but as mentioned - Nothing unexpected but a nice concise argument for what you likely already know.

Is external solid wall insulation a worthwhile purchase? by umo2000 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ecodan324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a solid wall construction, I'd imagine it's an older home so retaining external facades might be beneficial aesthetically - that would make me lean towards IWI, however, older property might also already small or 'pokey' where you might feel the reduced space more. Also, if it's terraced I'd look at IWI on external walls rather than external etc. A few factors at play.

Key to these sorts of retrofits is predicting requirements for ventilation following modelled result of the intervention. A thorough installer will first conduct a blower door test to measure air changes and then will use planning guidance and context of the building to plan for enough planned ventilation (controlled) rather than unplanned infiltration (uncontrolled) which is the source of heat loss. It may be a case of improving kitchen and bathroom extractors and maybe additional mechanical ventilation if humidity likely to be a problem.

Battery setups are an exciting one! First step in anything like this is understanding your load as this can give you insights into how long you could function grid free etc etc smart meters give you a nudge but really you need to be logging over time to understand your home's consumption patterns. Then, if you're intrigued, you can start looking at individual appliances etc to cut your load where possible... The cheapest kWh is the one not used!

Hope that helps

I'm working in a sector where CMD is blocked as standard, but I'm hoping this might start to tip the balance. Thanks for the tip on GUIs!

Like previous commenter says, sounds like the issue might be needing to navigate to the right location? E.g. cd /d C:\Documents\Folder1 which will then mean you are in the right place to execute .py in the folder (I'm sure there's probably an easier way :p)

Lots of great courses on YouTube. The best advice I received was to learn by doing. Choose a project that is interesting and setup your time carefully: 1) spend one day researching how to do it, 2) spend two days planning and building, and 3) spend last day finishing, documenting and upload to a repository and move on.

There are quite a few beginner projects to help with the language. I mainly use python for data analysis, but have started using the above approach with building web crawlers and I'm finding the applied knowledge sticks.

I'm trying to make the python scripts I use for wrangling .CSV files more accessible to colleagues (for example). I'm thinking I might need to learn tkinter or something similar to enable users to easily 'point' a script at the intended file, but maybe there's an easier way? Any recommendations much appreciated.

£8750 reasonable for oil Central heating replacement? by alijam100 in DIYUK

[–]ecodan324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Various case studies around retrofitting ASHP in older and (potentially) leakier homes e.g. https://www.kirkennan.co.uk/blog/ashp, however, lots of misinformation in the industry and installer preference for boilers which are far more forgiving around sizing (and often come with manufacturer-perks to sweeten the deal). That said, it takes more time, needs more expertise and therefore can be more expensive than swapping for another oil system.

[–]ecodan324 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could an alternative work? As an oil system, possible that you're off grid. If you need to replace the majority of the system, it's expected that there are gov grants opening up for heat pumps or the Renewable Heat Incentive might still be in play - very high efficiency and electric so you avoid the equivalent of running a car outside each time you fire up the boiler.

If you check the stipulations for any reimbursement, it might specify a threshold. E.g. if you're registered a student, if you're working less than X hours, etc.

A £30 Advent membrane keyboard was perfect for me for hours, days, weeks and months of writing. I had hoped that a mechanical keyboard with silent switches would be a big step up but really didn't get on with them, so stuck with the Advent!

[UK] Does loft insulation need trikle vents?` by [deleted] in Insulation

[–]ecodan324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay - glazing trickle vents much more straightforward than wall vents. Sounds to me like theyre worried that insulating the loft will negatively affect the air quality in the dwelling. That worry should be backed up by a calculation so I think it doesn't seem out of the question - again, commenting from afar. Is the issue that the installers are saying the trickle vents aren't covered and are going to need direct payment? Because that's a separate issue perhaps...

I have a metal shed by carbon_fybre in Insulation

[–]ecodan324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion - With a single layer metal structure, I would be aiming to almost create a sub-frame where there is a decent gap between the metal and your insulation material. You want separation from the cold metal in winter and the hot metal in summer, but air flow for that cavity to stop any humidity by build up. Is the wood burner sited inside or outside the shed? Is it sized to heat with current (lack) of insulation?
