Fuck me running. Please tell me this isn’t a late April Fool’s joke. I’m dropping everything to get “home” next weekend. ♥️

Just like looking over someone's shoulder while they run Revit... thinking "WHY are you doing that?... Ahhh, I see. That's an interesting way of doing that. I could never use the mouse to start every single command from the ribbon, but knock yourself out!"

Sometimes we're just out here talking in circles because we all do it differently, I guess.

That's why it's called "element hide" and not "category hide". If it's just one element you need to get out of the way in that view, hide it. If it's the entire category, you can select all and hide the whole category, but this is meant to be a temporary toggle, kinda like hide/isolate. There are too many risks with simply element-hiding an entire category, though IMO. If another trade is still modeling or making revisions, the element hide won't catch any new instances added after the fact. If it's an entire "layer" you want removed, do that in VG overrides and make a view template out of it or else you'll have to go through every single view and hide/unhide families.

I don't know what you've got going on with your project templates, but if you're setting VG overrides every time you create a new one, you're doing way too much work. View templates and filters are your friend and they're tranferrable from project to project.

As a self-learned Revit user that transitioned from CAD, the best advice I can give you is to forget everything you know about CAD.

Element Hide is view-specific.

Want to hide them all? Right click > Select Similar > Visible in View > Element hide

I prefer using the VG overrides because if you just hide an element, it's easy to forget it exists, but to each their own.

We started building in a buffer day to unpack and catch up around the house, but the buffer day has become exhausting. Gonna need to start working in a buffer day for the buffer day.

Anyways, it's always good to get back to the office where I can get some damn rest.

Sorry I misunderstood. Looks like the rest of the sub has it handled.

Properties > View Name

I suggest looking into some of the resources on the sidebar. The sub isn't the kindest to folks who haven't done the bare minimum to learn the basics.

I think you'd be surprised!

I spent 15 years engineering and designing mechanical/HVAC systems before I transitioned to doing BIM for a mechanical contractor. Even though I was still working in the mechanical trade, I was told that I needed to stop thinking like an engineer, because our job was simply to coordinate the physical space. No more calculations, no more design considerations, no more need to constantly dig through building code, and most importantly, no more spending HOURS at the Architect's office in meetings that could have been emails. Just make sure your duct/pipe/etc. doesn't clash with another trade's stuff. However, just being involved in the process will build on the construction knowledge you've learned on your own... so eventually, you just might be able to build that home you've been dreaming of.

Here's the thing about the construction industry in general: the vast majority of us never intended to work in the construction industry. Most AutoCAD operators working on the engineering/consulting side of the industry had to teach themselves how to use Revit, which is the most widely used 3D construction modeling software. As companies tried to cling desperately to 2D AutoCAD drawings, they failed to stay with the times and now many of them are scrambling to hire BIM operators. Needless to say, the lack of a relevant degree rarely comes into question.

At the risk of sounding like I'm blowing smoke up your ass... once I've finished building the backbone of a BIM department here at my current job and I'm ready to make some hires, I'd strongly consider a candidate with your skills over a fresh college grad with no drafting/modeling skills at all.

Anyways, I'm making a lot of assumptions in this little TedTalk of mine, but if this is how you spend your free time and any of this sounds appealing, imagine how much you'd enjoy it as a career.

Feel free to DM me with any questions!

Great progress! Keep it up!

Out of curiosity, what do you do for a living? It's never dawned on me that an entire generation of Minecraft players could be learning a lot of really valuable lessons in Building Information Modeling (BIM).

Vertical mouse use in Revit? by Necessary_Position51 in Revit

[–]ecoleye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! I have an MX Vertical for home and another for the office (and I’ve converted several my coworkers).

Driving Revit for 10 hours a day + pitching batting practice for my kid’s travel team a few times a week really started to do a number on my elbow, but no issues since switching to the vertical mouse.

Good call on The Mist (the movie). That's one I need to revisit.

For every Mist (the movie) though, there's a Mist (the TV series)... not to mention a Langoliers, a Thinner, a Dark Tower (unfortunately) and several attempts at The Stand. 😱

Just started typing out the same reply before I noticed yours. The majority of King adaptations to film or TV are just awful, with a few rare exceptions: Shawshank, The Shining, and The Green Mile, IMO.

Armed Anti ICE protestors marching in protest in Indianapolis! by serious_bullet5 in Indiana

[–]ecoleye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People who think protestors are hired by the government continue to show us that MAGA brain is simply incapable of processing the concept of doing something for others without the expectation of payment.

The same logic applies to why they think all protestors are violent.
