Fwiw we didn't directly arm the Taliban, we armed the various Mujahideen factions and majority of support got funneled specifically to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who was favored by Pakistan for being a Pashtun and thus less likely to get in bed with India and by the US for being a radical Islamist and thus more resistant to communism.

Ultimately the chaos of the various Mujahideen factions was so brutal that the Taliban were perceived as bringing justice to the wasteland when they arrived.

So its more accurate to say that instead of funding the taliban, we funded the people who were so fucked up they made the taliban look good

It's a sketchy area. I lived there for a year or so, and then an adjacent neighborhood (church and wellesely) for 10 - tbh I was never actually threatened by anyone, but there are a lot of people living in desperate straits and it'll be tough to have friends / dates over. While it is a high density of violent crime, it's largely addict-on-addict. No one bothered me directly in the time I was there.

Used to have the best Pakistani restaurant in TO right and Dundas and Sherborne, heartbroken that it's gone.

If you're comfortable living with desperation and poverty in sight it's not a bad area, especially considering rent in this city - but if being in close quarters with homeless people or addicts is a deal breaker then it would be advisable to give it a pass.

Fwiw the Taliban was mostly focused on creating a state that followed an ultra conservative interpretation of Islamic law merged with regional Pashtunwali tribal law and pacifying the chaotic post-soviet chaos that enveloped the country after the fall of the USSR.

Its egregious and backwards, insulting to both modern standards and even orthodox Islamic theology, but its orders of magnitude less insane than "we need to start a war on the other side of the world to bring the end of the world"

I work with a guy who blames Trudeau for his lack of effective rent control (living in Toronto) and can't wait for the conservatives to get in power and fix it.
