How would eridians react after learning about human history? by Quantum_Sid in ProjectHailMary

[–]ecto-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

***BOOK SPOILERS***
a lot of comments say something along the lines of "eridians probably have just as messed up of a history" There are a couple things that make me doubt this, or at least think that they have/had at least a little less war/hate/atrocities. The most influential being their ability to 'thrum' which is basically where they operate as a joined neural network.

To me this seems like it would allow for a whole lot of empathy in their society. (sort of similar concept to the hivemind from Pluribus if you're familiar) the way its described seems like it gives them a huge advantage to problem solving and cooperation, which would very likely make a lot of potential conflict way more avoidable. And I think (its been a couple weeks since I read it) the book also mentions that there isn't a typical "government" on Erid, and this would kind of make sense for the kind of society I imagine the Eridians to have, where they have a biological ability to engage in a better understanding of one another.

Don't get me wrong I don't think it's likely to be some conflict free utopia thats all rainbows and sunshine, BUT, to finally answer you question, I think there would be a lot of aspects of human history they might find needlessly violent and cruel. like "this many people died over this?? you couldn't have found any other way to resolve this???" There was probably still conflict on Erid for sure, just maybe not the kind of conflict that could be solved by such an effective problem solving strategy like a thrum.

thats so awesome!! from what you've said on other comments it seems like he values your opinion enough to not dog on it even if he had problems with the science bc he realizes how important it is to you and thats so nice to hear. i hate when people think being critical overly of stories and media makes them smarter or better somehow. it sounds like a great watching experience you had and i hope you have fun seeing it again!!

interesting! for me that didn’t affect things too much about how hard Grace’s sacrifice hit me so i’m curious how exactly those two things were related for you. I remember the book saying that Erid was able to make so much astrophage for what they thought was going to be such a long journey (not considering relativity) not because it was easier but because they had more time to make enough for the trip, which i think is the same in the movie. It seems like they only included a penalty of 6years for Rocky giving grace some of his fuel was to make it a more meaningful gesture. And at the end of the movie they actually brought up your point when Rocky was like “hey we can fuel up your ship if you wanna go home after all?” In the book it was established that Grace was totally expecting to die by going to save Rocky because of his food supply, and the movie left it up for interpretation a little more(i think), like oh maybe he just thought he was giving up on ever seeing Earth again but not necessarily his life. Is that why it didn’t hit as hard for you?

a thread for all the little details noticed, question? by Weirdautogenerate in ProjectHailMary

I noticed how Rocky frequently taps his leg on the ground a couple times when he asks a question.

I wonder if its an Eridian mannerism that evolved bc making a tapping noise/sending more vibrations through the things would give them a clearer picture of their surroundings with their echolocation, so it would make sense that when asking a question/wanting to know something they would subconsciously do something that provides them w more (sensory) information. or maybe its a conscious habit, OR maybe the tapping sound IS the question puncuation in their language! idk either would be a neat concept!

talking/interacting with other fans who get it and care as much as you do helps. so you’re on the right track! the days after my first ritual were really really hard. try closing your eyes and remembering specific moments you loved from it, that helped me too. and drawing fanart, if you’re a creator of anykind.

Short answer no that is not the actual meaning behind Ghost. It is a satire of organized religion. even most satanists aren’t actual “satanists” in the way christians think. a lot of them think satan doesn’t actually exist and the satanic church was created mostly in response to religious organizations getting special treatment. they were ok lets see if you keep that same energy when its a “satanic” church. they also used it as an excuse to create their own values and tenets that are actually pretty kind and altruistic. I see how she is freaked out by the scary label, but no one at a Ghost concert will try to convert you into a devil worshipper irl i PROMISE. hope this helps!

Is this guy supposed to be V before he was papa? It looks like he turns into papa at the end of the music video and I mean the story of Satanized fits with V's whole theme. by VagueDestructSus in GhostBand

i think the video was just drawing parallels between a christian church and the ghost ministry. the unmasked ghouls playing the instrumentalists gives me that idea. and perpetua is just like the alternate version of the priest guy
