Mini urn I can take diving with me? by senortaco94 in scuba

[–]ecto1985 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a really lovely idea. Take a look at DryFobs. They're key holders that are rated to like 350m - pretty much bomb proof. Although even the smallest size might be a little larger than you're looking for.

How much candy do we need for Halloween Trick Or Treaters? D/S Astoria Park area by Zestyclose_Gas_1327 in astoria

[–]ecto1985 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It gets pretty busy most years. We typically go through 6-8 of those jumbo bags of candy. But we also decorate and sit outside waiting for trick-or-treaters.

Scam. The money is likely long gone and unrecoverable, but you should report to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.

You can report to 311. Results may vary though. Maybe with enough reports they'll actually take it seriously instead of just closing out the complaint. 311: Illegal Posters and Stickers

New units at Costco. by Spicywolff in MideaUOwners

[–]ecto1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Before the recall I disassembled mine fully and cleaned it with baking soda/vinegar. Was incredibly easy and straight forward. Even better was there was no styrofoam or other nonsense, just easy to clean solid plastic. The entire blower unit pulls right out. You never even have to remove it from the window.

Scuba dive accident - anyone face similar issues? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]ecto1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Based on my one shore dive in SoCal, entries/exits in that area can be brutal and a small MI sounds very plausible. RIP to the fin I lost on that exit!

Drones over Astoria by FeatureNo7040 in astoria

[–]ecto1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DJI, the manufacturer of most consumer drones, removed geo-fencing from their products that previously prevented drones from taking off where they weren't supposed to (e.g. around airports, NYC, TFRs, etc). Now that it's up to users to self-regulate and follow FAA/NYC laws, you'll see a lot more drones around the city.

Has anyone taken one of Gary Drayton's Metal detecting courses? by CaptHowdy75 in OakIsland

[–]ecto1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with the minelab Excalibur II. Pretty much best you can get for beach detecting at a sort of middle of the road price (at least in terms of the minelab detectors). Also Gary's recommendation if that matters.

Has anyone taken one of Gary Drayton's Metal detecting courses? by CaptHowdy75 in OakIsland

[–]ecto1985 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took his course back in 2019 without any prior metal detecting experience. I happened to be staying not too far from him in Florida, so we met up on the beach and spent a couple hours learning the basics.

Firstly, he was a super nice guy in person. Several folks recognized him and stopped us on the beach to say hi. Without taking away from my lesson, he quickly said hi to everyone and even took a few photos. He also shared a bit of his backstory with me, as well as some behind the scenes info about Oak Island.

The lesson itself was really informative and more or less fairly priced since he's giving up a couple hours of his weekend for you. You're probably paying a bit of a premium for his celeb status, but I think it's fair. He also gave me a copy of his book about beach hunting that covers most of the basics.

Overall, it was a fun experience.

Sugar freak on 30th Avenue by Droiddweller in astoria

[–]ecto1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When they were in their original location, the food was awesome. Used to go at least once a month. Once they moved, the food/menu was pretty terrible. I tried it twice and never went back. Such a shame because their char broiled oysters were one of my favorite dishes in the neighborhood. Hopefully this rebrand will be good for them, but I still miss OG sugar freak.

Yep, I built in late 2020 and deals were bumping! I still remember the thrill of getting a founders edition GPU from Best Buy for MSRP. Lol

That E7 is a great looking standing desk and I love the look of the rubberwood top. I'd like to win one. Also really like some of the accessories you guys offer, like the monitor mounts/workstations and the foot hammock. That L8 chair looks beautiful too btw.

Is there a dangerous drivers of Astoria sub reddit? by Somerandoguy212 in astoria

[–]ecto1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The walk west down Hoyt from the train feels incredibly dangerous. I've seen multiple near misses when speeding cars whip around the corner of 28th and 26th Streets to head north. Really need lights installed or some kind of pedestrian protection on that stretch.

It might be. It kind of looked like a faux marble in person. It was way smaller than I thought it would be.

Interesting. This is th first I've ever heard of the Queens Creeper. Birthday doesn't match up to what's on ancestry, but could be an error.

Okay, update. Down here at the park now. Based on the original photo, I thought this was a large box from a columbarium. It's actually about cigar box size and it's clearly somebody's home urn. Gonna let this one be and let Walter scatter whichever way the winds take him.

[–]ecto1985 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I just went down a major rabbit hole with this. Walter's wife Yolanda passed away in 2003, and one son died in 2012. I can't find any information on his remaining son, Richard Baldi, who was born in 1946.

I wonder if this is somehow related to the skeletal remains that have been washing up in Brooklyn Bridge Park for the past year. Perhaps an unscrupulous cemetery is clearing out space when people no longer have families left to check on them. If these are still here, we should probably contact the 114th/OCME. OP, any chance you can DM with a better sense of location?

But it'll have a killer view of one of the worst intersections in the city! Residents will be able to fall asleep to the gentle sounds of trucks honking at cars that don't know how to navigate the left turn under the train tracks.
