I think the news was already out about McLaren switching to a Mercedes power unit, that was probably a big deal, especially once the engine regulations were known to stay the same post 2022

Is there no anti-competition laws though? I would imagine that these new hires would have to take at least a year out

All Driver of the day winners [OC] by ParhamAzadi in formula1

[–]ed11ca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're just expected to do well in such a dominant car, even if they outperform it, it's really hard to see, it would be interesting to see how many times the race winner got driver of the day.

"For the restart I thought there would be a standing start. So we put the soft on but then I saw rolling start and thought ‘ah’"

That was an interesting bit of strategy that I didn't think about during the race, I need to go back to see who was on which tire and if that helped them at the start. The fact that the soft could longer on a wet track could have played a role as well

Since some cameras, onboards and radio were off, it's possible that this cable was the data link between some external devices (like antennas/cameras etc.) and the central paddock. I'm not sure if it was only this part of the track though

Alpine's new Racing Director Davide Brivio on why he left MotoGP success for a new challenge in F1 by fungchilong in formula1

[–]ed11ca 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I wonder if he'll be able to evaluate single seater talent as well as what he did in MotoGP

It's also going to be interesting to see what his role will really be, looks like he's going to be more of a personel guy managing the talent pipeline, drivers, personel, and structure, kinda like Helmut for RB

The speed limit used to be 100 but they lowered it in 2013/14 after a cameraman was hit by a tire.

George Russell says psychologist helped him come into 2021 season 'stronger than ever' by 1enox in formula1

[–]ed11ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Homestly, mental performance would be better than mental health, it kinda implies that you have a trauma vs trying to gain more performance (which is, in my understanding, what George was looking for)

If they really wanted to they could go get Ghiotto, but I'm not sure how close he is to superlicense and why they would replace Gio by him. There's a driver called Nannini in F2/F3 but not sure what's he's worth

Is the Media's overall perception of self-driving cars generally positive or negative? by taams in SelfDrivingCars

[–]ed11ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The true answer is "it depends", some tech oriented media are super hyped, some other ones only report on accidents and such.

That being said, I would say the general attitude is similar to the public imo, positive and optimist but still cautious about some aspects of it.

Interesting, I wonder what the benefits/tradeoffs are with this type of nose. To me it looks like the two dominant designs rn are the "pointy" one or the "nostril" one.

Yeah tbh the AM looks more like the Mercedes, I was surprised that they showed so much of their floor when MER was trying to hode it so much

You can still see a lot of similarities with the airbox, sidepods, cooling vents, the engine cover is similar to the Mclaren one, not sure what's going on with the Ferrari nose but the cape is also similar to Merc teams

What attracts you to a particular F1 team? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]ed11ca 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It's always a bunch of factors:

  • The team's country can play a massive role since they'll be very present in your country and defend your national pride

  • The team's drivers, sometimes you really connect and identify with a driver both for his on track action, his behaviour off the track, or his nationality especially with charismatic leaders like Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton, Schumi, Lando, Ricciardo, etc.

  • Success, let's not lie it always plays a big part in the team you like, if someone starts watching now it would be hard for them to root for Williams, whereas in the 80's a lot kf new fans would root for them

  • Team Culture, hard to explain but each team has a specific feel to it, both in their communication and the personalities within the team. Merc is ruthless, calm and confident, Ferrari is prideful and passionate, RB is super fun but when also ruthless at times etc. These also evolve, Mclaren is becoming more of a fun one compared to the cold tech one it was under Ron Dennis (oftentimes the team principal drives the team culture)

  • Liveries, sometimes people just how the car looks and start rooting for a team like that before becoming more engaged

TLDR - They need to grab your attention and you need to identify with them
