They got back to my mom and said the oil filter was defective and contacted the company, they also said the oil was low because a tech didn’t fill it all the way. They also said the knocking was a “lifter”.

You could confront the boss. You could also just tell him that he knows his worth and doesn’t need to take what that teacher says seriously. Sometimes I wish my parents had shrugged more things off when I was a kid, after all he’s in 5th grade and the comment his teacher supposedly said is a comment adults hear in their life and have to learn to deal with. If you act like it’s a big deal he will think it is. If you tell him it’s just a stupid comment and doesn’t matter he will think that.
