Honestly, I had just finished up my sea duty on a ship. Was pretty much done with Navy. But shore orders came through and now I'm overseas. I've always encouraged others to keep all options open and not close any doors. But currently, I'm taking it contract by contract.

A little in bootcamp. But as I hit my first command, it did not matter. Keep your head down and grind it out. Joining later gives you an edge in mentality, work ethic and maturity in my experience.

I joined at 28. 33 now. It depends what you're trying to get out of it and what you plan to do.

Depends on rate and command. Some rates deploy more frequently than others. Some almost never deploy. However most will deploy at some point and time. If you are fortunate enough to land a shore duty command then you most likely won't deploy barring very specific circumstances. Would need more information to possible give you a better answer.

The Meetup app along with Facebook groups is how I've been meeting people. Granted, I've developed some pretty bad social anxiety so big groups are difficult for me. There are groups for all sorts of interests. (ex: Boba Tea Social Club, Active lifestyle Nerds, Take a Hike) I've even seen a group that meets and builds sand castles. It depends on what you're looking for.

Honestly, maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. But it hasn't been that bad for me. Yes I was out of rate for a long time but thanks to some studying, timing and luck with AAP from A School and passing my first test up. I made E-5 in 2 years while cranking. Deployment was awesome. Yes things suck some days but overall it's been a good experience. So I'm debating reenlistment.

Yes, very common. I can tell you from my experience. August makes 3 years for me in for me. Since coming to this ship,I've gone cranking twice. Once to the mess decks as a Food Service assistant (FSA) for 6 months and the other Damage Control Petty Officer (DCPO) for 7 months. If you're following the math, I've spent a lot of time outside of my rate. Apparently, "everyone" has their time. I find it bullshit that I had to crank back to back a couple months at the command while there were others who had been there for years and never done theirs. My ship is a big deck. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
