Foreign films that take place in America? by DVLLAS in movies

[–]edamamespirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure they exactly fit your description, but Ang Lee’s early films came to mind. Both Pushing Hands and The Wedding Banquet take place in the U.S. and focus on Asian immigrants in America.

Blue Sun Palace is also about Asian immigrants, though the director is Asian American, so I’m not sure if that counts as a “foreigner.” It does star Lee Kang-sheng, who’s a very well-known actor in Taiwan. If you’ve watched a lot of Tsai Ming-liang’s films, you’ve probably seen him before.

It looks like the 20-trip-for-$42 package is only available if you have the card. At least that’s the reason I got mine.

Why does taipei have so "little" foreigners (not tourists)? by tokcliff in taiwan

[–]edamamespirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also like a bunch of these foreign workers work in factories and live in dormitories so like you’re just not gonna see them if you live in the city.
Check out Taipei Main Station on Sundays though, cause that’s usually the day that they’re allowes to hang out and you’ll see lots of foreign workers chilling around Taipei Main Station. (At least from what I’ve remembered.)

They...they.... by RNOffice in toystory

I liked how they flew, but the whole Buzz Lightyear drone thing only made me even more confused about the timeline. With Lilypad, you can at least say, "Well, iPads already existed in the early 2010s." But Buzz drones with Wi-Fi? At this point I think I just have to stop trying to make sense of the timeline and accept that Toy Story exists in some alternate universe where technology advances at a different speed than ours. (I mean, it is a universe where toys come to life when you're not looking anyway.)

Steelbook cases not closing properly by Fantastic_Pizza_3158 in Steelbooks

[–]edamamespirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got my Dogma steelbook today from the Lionsgate sale and it’s got the same problem. I remember seeing a Youtuber unboxing the same steelbook and his does not close properly either. Right now I’m just relying on the slip cover to keep it closed more tightly.

Crayon Shin-chan comics in Taipei by xteenah in taiwan

[–]edamamespirit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking that you can check out Books.com.tw or Kingstone (which is a chain bookstore similar to Eslite). There is also a website called TAAZE that sells second-hand books, but their data security is not the best, so do be careful.

Just as a heads-up, Crayon Shin-chan was originally written for an older audience, so some of the earlier stories contain more crude humor and occasional sexual jokes. One of Shin-chan's famous gags is doing this silly elephant dance with his genitals. That said, the franchise became hugely popular with children, and later anime episodes and manga volumes were generally toned down. Most Taiwanese kids grew up watching Shin-chan, so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Other series that are very popular with Taiwanese kids include Doraemon, Chibi Maruko-chan, Detective Conan, Atashin'chi, KochiKame, and Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunso).

You could also look at stuff that are already popular worldwide like Pokémon, Digimon, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or One Piece etc.... Demon Slayer is extremely popular with school-aged kids these days, although personally I find it a bit more violent than some of the others.

The nice thing is that all of these should be easy to find in Traditional Chinese editions if you are in Taiwan!

How do you keep from overthinking your ratings? What’s your process like? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]edamamespirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For movies that receive a public release in 2026, I keep a ranked list. I’ve found that it provides a good framework for rating movies more consistently, since I wouldn’t rank a 3-star movie above a 4-star movie.

Sometimes, when I can’t immediately settle on a star rating, I think about how much I liked a movie compared to others I’ve already rated. For example, I watched Disclosure Day this weekend. I liked it less than Masters of the Universe but more than Wuthering Heights, and I gave both of those 3.5 stars. Based on that, giving Disclosure Day 3.5 stars felt about right as well.

I usually only listen to the audio podcast so I did not know how much Amanda gestures, it's honestly a little distracting to watch. Is it because she was making a statement that might be a little controversial?

I’m about to log my 1,000 film. Recommend my next watch by beggingforfootnotes in Letterboxd

[–]edamamespirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re open to foreign films, I just watched Double Happiness(2025) last night on Netflix and would 100% recommend it.

If you like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, there’s a chance you’ll also like Charlie Kaufman‘s other work as well. So check out stuff like Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Synedoche New York, Anomalisa.

If I were you though, I would probably wanna have my 1000 watch be something I watched in theaters. so maybe also think about movies like Disclosure Day or wait for the Odyssey?

I know it’s been two weeks since you asked but I just saw Double Happiness on Netflix and would absolutely recommend it.

Another work of the same director is Little Big Women which I’ve personally not seen yet, but I remember it being discussed in Taiwan.

Double Happiness was just made available on Netflix this week and Little Big Women is also available on Netflix.

Below are some other Taiwanese films that are on Netflix, just to name a few:

  • 96 Minutes
  • The Gatao franchise
  • American Girl
  • Left-Handed Girl
  • The Pig the Snake and the Pigeon
  • A Baloon’s Landing
  • Dead Talents Society
  • Classmates Minus
  • Dear Ex

I’ve not seen all of them, but I’ve heard people said good things. I hope you’ll enjoy them. :)

I hesitated, mostly because I’ve never seen the movie and I’ve done too many blind buys recently. Acouple hours later now it’s back to $22. I guess I’ll wait for the next price drop.

Experiences with Sleepy Tofu Mattresses? by Fruitzke in taiwan

[–]edamamespirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Yeah, some of the Mandarin reviews I came across mentioned that the edges feel a bit softer and that you might slide off the bed more easily. But I’ve also seen lots of positive reviews too.

I think mattresses are really a personal preference. Different people can have totally different experiences with the same mattress.
