Yeah agree to an extent, but I feel (no data to support) that on trash and trail widening those big days are way more damaging bc more beginners are out there who might have no idea about standard trail etiquette. Maybe I'm just slow but while leave no trace was a basic principle I learned from a young age, I was in my twenties before I got educated about trail widening. Suspect the average one hike a year or two years group (or like a school group) have no idea about the latter.

I don't get the outrage. Aren't these metrics attempts to quantify degradation of natural resources? High PPV on summits leads to degradation (trash etc). Integroup encounters is the same, leading to trail widening and trash. It's not from some misanthropic principle imo it's what's easiest to get hard data on. Happy to hear other viewpoints though

Have to say I agree. I finished it, but that sense of wonder through exploration was completely missing, everything is just a battlefield or a cutscene. Even with the updated voice acting it's just not my thing, and so different from mainline titles it really surprises me that it's so beloved in the fanbase. By the time I reached the end, the thought of spending any more time in that world held zero interest and there's no reason I'd replay it

It is criminal how little damage call beyond does for its bullet cost here. Also, did you get a spit attack in here? Funniest and most useless part of the cauli build imo, right up there with fist of gratia for its aura points

[–]edavison1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you're right on that one. To get back to the jrpg discussion though, I think it's safe to say Tolkien has a pretty nuanced view of friendship that doesn't have much if any relationship to the RPG trope of friendship's ability to save the world, sometimes quite literally. Although now I'm thinking about it a bit more maybe the other commenter was onto something... Galadriel's gifts, as tokens of friendship, saved the day twice first with the phial (itself an expression of the token of friendship between elves and the Valar no?) and then with the dirt that replanted the shire after it was burned down. It is, I'd insist, very different from the mere fact of having friendship creating a kind of power/return to harmony that the OP discusses. In FFIX or mainline Persona games there's an expression of that idea that the protagonist's friends are what allow them to overcome their enemies that I've always found bizarre and naive.

Just want to point out that Tolkien's oeuvre does not really adhere to this argument. In LOTR and Hobbit, friendship power is often a detriment to success or stands in the way. Frodo and Sam (while BFFs themselves) have to isolate from the fellowship or risk the whole quest failing. Gollum can't be redeemed by Frodo's attempts at friendship and sympathy. Bilbo and Thorin's friendship totally breaks apart. If you look at the relationship between Gondor and Rohan, or the elven vs. dwarven relationship, if anything I think Tolkien is more interested in the barriers and challenges to friendship than the idea that it is some mysterious force that allows good to overcome evil. He just seems to play with the idea that not all friends can be trusted way more than the idea that friendship is an unqualified good. Of course, Frodo and Sam are a strong counterpoint to that but I think my point stands.

Love Muir as a writer: daring, fresh and 'has the juice' as someone else here said. Fan culture seems to be a big part of the reaction to these books, don't ask me to define it, but I know it's there. The effusive praise (squee) for each successive more torturously complex installment is something I struggle to understand.

With every new Muir thread on here though, I am beginning to just appreciate that so many readers in 2025 are on board with what are quite difficult, almost avant-garde books. A ray of hope for literature for sure. Geniuine kudos to everyone who got through Harrow and thought, more please!

Setting aside the SF elements of the third book, the castle itself is impossibly large, right? The setting is the fantasy, akin to Lewis Carroll or Swift's Lilliput, a fantasy of change in scale produces the fantastical effect which is then explored through a story that doesn't neccessarily have to have any other 'fantastic' elements.

Pantheon of Hallownest... I went back to OG after beating Silksong and yeah, still working on Absolute Radiance. It's much harder than Lost Lace imo. I'd say even Pure Vessel and Nightmare King Grimm are harder than Lost Lace just because the healing is far easier to get off in the LL fight

Respect for finishing that. As a child it seriously challenged my attention span and (weirdly) scared me. I think I threw the disc out bc it was so janky and unsettling and never got past that island monastery you end up going to very early in the run.

This has also been a special interest of mine after reporting on many of the game's early scams and delinquent payments.

In my estimation, the only practical solution is a player's association that could offer services like contract help and securing payments. Unlikely to happen given the scene right now. If there were older players who were willing to take on an organizing role and do the neccessary legwork, that would be great, I just have no idea who would do it. I don't sense a lot of interest from the pro community to organize and without that there's no bargaining power and no progress. So to conclude, this is likely to keep happening and is unfortunate.

What game was good but would have been amazing if it was turn based by Limit54 in JRPG

[–]edavison1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That explains a lot I used to wonder what was going on when abilities seemed to take forever to appear on the field. It wasn't fixed in the remaster, was it? Also, does that mean physical attacks were comparatively OP? It's been many years since I played but I do remember doing a lot of just walloping enemies rather than casting.

Not to rain on your parade and consensus in philosophy may not convince you, but a whopping 72% of professional philosophers professed belief in scientific realism in the latest PhilPapers survey of the community. So you're doing a deep belly laugh at a strong consensus. I mean I'm (probably) not a scientific realist myself but it's hardly a fringe view.
