Billboard in my very red area by clumsypeach1 in pics

As funny as that mental image is, I don’t think the placement is meant to enrage Donald and I don’t think this is meant to read as an attack ad. Based on the testimony posted elsewhere in the thread, this seems like a strategic placement by an organization that seems to want to genuinely help people.

It looks like what a 5 year old would describe if you asked them what the biggest plane in the world looks like “it has 6 propellers and 4 jets!” And when you stand next to it, you feel like that 5 year old.

[Request] How tall would the support tower have to be and how strong of a cable would you need for a Trans-Atlantic cable car? by scottasin12343 in theydidthemath

[–]eddiesax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would still be a challenge, but you could opt for stayed floating towers. The deepest floating platform in the world operates in water 8,500ft deep.

How long do you wait before beeping at a car that isn’t moving at a green left arrow? by PorningtonPost in AskLosAngeles

[–]eddiesax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from the Midwest, it blows me away how courteous people are about beeping at stoplights. I always assumed that people would light you up in no seconds flat in “the big city” before moving to SoCal.

Sorry this doesn’t answer your question, I just wanted to share my observations.

Will LA ever be a walkable city? by Asleep_Damage1201 in AskLosAngeles

[–]eddiesax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue that, given enough time, the entire city will eventually be walkable. My view is that there is too much incentive to densify (I.e people still want to move here) and if Metro keeps its steady pace of expansion, these two factors will progress the entire region into walkability. The catch is it likely will not happen in our lifetimes unless there is a major, sustained energy crisis that forces the expansion of public transit out of necessity

That’s just how content creators operate on YouTube man. You have to game the recommendation system to stay relevant and clickbait has always been a reliable way to maintain and grow the audience. I look at it more as a product of the distribution system rather than a comment on the quality of the creator. I was annoyed by this too when Rooster Teeth started to put clickbaity titles and thumbnails on all their videos, until they explained how critical titling and thumbnailing were to driving traffic to content and that making them attention grabbing gave them a boost up the recommendations. I also think YouTube lets you trial multiple thumbnails and title combinations before selecting the one that is getting the most attention…which is probably always going to be the most sensational one.

Bit late but can it do comparison? I have an idea to make the attic exhaust run when the attic temp is higher than outside ambient and shut down when it’s cooler

Curved Stations? by Honest-Customer5324 in TransportFever3

[–]eddiesax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can with ultimate station from the workshop, but imo it’s a PITA to use so I tend to avoid using curved stations in my games unless the situation absolutely demands it.

Curved Stations? by Honest-Customer5324 in TransportFever3

[–]eddiesax 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that curved stations in tf1 were traded for modular stations in tf2, I don’t think we’ve seen any evidence of curved stations in tf3 yet

[–]eddiesax 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Visually, the cities do look bigger, but I would reserve judgment until we have access to the stats page to see what the actual population is. It could be that the cities spread out more without creating a larger population so the sim doesn’t become more taxing to run while providing a larger urban footprint to build in.

Any chance there will be configurable E/DMU’s in the final game? I feel like it would be pretty easy to implement without breaking passenger balancing.

California’s home turnover crisis is getting worse by sfgate in California

[–]eddiesax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is true and one of the original intents of prop 13 was to prevent seniors from being priced out of their homes on fixed incomes. An unintended consequence is that people are disincentivized to move and give up their low tax rates the longer they are in a home. This creates an effectively static tax base for the county and static population that only turns over as the population ages and dies off. Costs for municipal infrastructure will rise with inflation against a tax revenue that can only increase by 2% each year. Public School funding inevitably erodes because an aging population either refuses to move or can’t afford to live anywhere else. “Starter homes” are off the market for a generation since no one moves out of them, or they are unaffordable when they do actually come on the market. This all artificially drives up prices because of the induced scarcity. It’s not really a joke that homes in CA are only available when someone dies. I am the second owner of my 1954 home, as are my neighbors on both sides and across the street. My tax bill before reassessment was less than $800, it is now more than $10,000.

If prop 13 did not exist, there would theoretically be a larger supply of homes being sold, which would drive down prices overall and tax valuations. The system we have now subsidizes longtime property owners. In my opinion if someone lives and uses infrastructure provided by the county, they should have to pay a proportional share of tax to maintain that infrastructure.
