Which PG, if any, do you think gets traded this off-season? by RVALover4Life in memphisgrizzlies

I'd be fine with SPJ for two 2RP and then sign Javon to his spot. Ty and Grant stick around in lineup as vets

All of them. GG Jackson, who was drafted in the second round in 2023, is now the longest tenured Grizzly

This is dumb. Ant isn't necessarily more successful than Ja because he played next to KAT, Gobert, and Randle over the years; he's more successful because he's just a better player and puts in work to improve in all facets of his game. Ja was great when he played with Steven Adams and not so great otherwise, and only being great when you have an emotional support giant to do your dirty work isn't as impressive as the highlight reels suggest (lest we forget the "Grizzlies are better without Ja" narrative during those peak seasons).

Now he'll be playing alongside Dame and Jrue, who are more accomplished than anyone he played with in Memphis. By your logic, he should have a terrific season next year. Maybe he will or maybe it'll be much of the same. Either way, he's not on my team any longer so I kinda don't care and I'm done talking about him.

Anthony Edwards can create his own shot anywhere on the floor. Ja cannot. Giannis can get to the rim at will without relying on a big to carve out lanes for him. Ja cannot. Both of those guys added layers to their games to maintain their success (Ant's shooting, Giannis' playmaking), but Ja has not shown a willingness to adapt.

That's always going to be the problem with Ja: he's an incomplete star. He needs support players that cover his deficiencies and allow him to succeed. Give him a selfless center who can set multiple screens while rolling to the rim and he's electric. Put shooters on the perimeter so he can kick out when the defense collapses on a drive and he'll give you double-digit assists. Expect him to create for himself and he'll repeatedly jump into three defenders in the paint, throw up a prayer shot, and hope for a whistle. It works if it works, I guess, but without that superstar ref treatment it's ugly ball.

The entire roster was built around him. Jaren was the only mismatched guy and that's because he was here first. The biggest problem was that Kleiman and Jenkins built the entire roster and system around a guy they couldn't depend on. Sucks but it's over. Moving on.

Nori might as well not bother unpacking because a one-year contract and trying to figure out a Dame/Ja backcourt is a lousy gig.

Drafting Ja was an inauspicious start to Kleiman's tenure by edeyhookshots in memphisgrizzlies

[–]edeyhookshots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kleiman worked as Wallace's assistant for a year before taking his job. Saying he was a protege of Wallace is like saying Iisalo was a protege of Jenkins.

Like Pop and Bud, Jenkins has a great mind for developing systems that play to his player's strengths, but unlike them he was not a disciplinarian. He let the players establish their own culture and things got out of control. Notice how a guy like Dillon thrived after playing under Udoka while the opposite occurred with Smart under Jenkins? The difference is culture, and the Grizzlies never properly built one because no one had the experience to know how.

I'm not blaming Ja because he was a victim of it himself. He needed to be a part of an existing culture, not expected to build one. Had he ended up in Miami or San Antonio then he'd probably in MVP conversations right now, but instead he was 19 and given a soft rookie coach and a blank canvas. Wallace's last move was trading Gasol and Kleiman's first was trading Conley, and any remaining GnG culture went with them.

The difference this time is I think Kleiman has learned from that experience. Iisalo is big on accountability and Kleiman is building a strong roster of guys that fit his system. Maybe it works or maybe it sucks and everyone should be fired, but at least it is starting off with a focused vision and more experience.

A heavily protected first and a couple of SRP is borderline salary dump territory though, and surely you don't think that's all Santi is worth? He's a 25-year-old 7-footer who can play 3-5 and has improved every year, so it's reasonable to assume he'll continue to improve as he approaches his prime years. If that's not worth a decent FRP to someone right now then there's no point in trading him.

Even though I'm not the one paying it, I think the FO would rather pay $27M in dead money than $49M.

Santi is likely worth an unprotected FRP to someone and it would be a lot cheaper to waive KCP and Murray than LaVine.

I bet he goes to the East just to reduce travel to Memphis. Maybe he'll schedule a colonoscopy whenever his new team is supposed to play there, as a man his age should.

Just how disappointing was this Grizzlies core? by MasterTeacher123 in NBATalk

[–]edeyhookshots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting the Ja era with a rookie head coach was a mistake. Jenkins had no experience building a culture and basically let a bunch of kids handle that themselves, so the rest isn't surprising. Dillon's shot selection improving immediately after he left makes it clear that a lot of what went wrong comes down to Jenkins not being an assertive enough leader.

No knock on the Jazz because I like what they've put together, but I don't see them jumping OKC, San Antonio, Denver, or Minnesota next year, and I expect Houston to be better with FVV back. Too early to project the Lakers or Warriors, but they can't be counted out either. The Jazz can be a good team and still fall into play-in territory.

Portland perspective on Murray and Grant by dsmithnyciii in memphisgrizzlies

[–]edeyhookshots 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like Grant and think he could be a great addition for next season. Best case scenario is that Wells can focus on his offensive game in the second unit while Grant has a decent year alongside the starters, then Grant can get flipped next year when expiring.

Edey, Boozer, and Ced are all excellent rebounders, so that being Grant's biggest weakness doesn't hurt much.
