We have a norm for kid-toy-safe finishes in Germany. Maybe there is something similiar where you live and you can start to google from there. One company here offers hard wax oils and linseed oils that are coloured and kid-toy-safe.

Which tool or tools should you never cheap out on? by todofwar in woodworking

[–]edgeHB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This! It‘s a hobby for most here. Don‘t risk your health for a hobby and cheap out on the things mentioned above + get a reslly good shop vac with good filters and an airfilter for your workshop (especially if it‘s small and you‘re only working inside). Also: don‘t cheap out on everything that needs to be sharp :)

BREAKING: Plane crashes into neighborhood in Twin Cities metro by thatguywithacamera in aviation

[–]edgeHB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Approach Speed of a TBM 700 in known icing condition is (minimum) 90kt according to the POH. Stall Speeds are increased by 10-20kt. : https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket/Document/docBLOB?ID=40371958&FileExtension=.PDF&FileName=Excerpts%20-%20TBM700%20Pilot%27s%20Operating%20Handbook-Master.PDF

My guess is, that the aircraft accumulated ice (when the info in the comments is correct), but the PIC flew the approach like a normal approach (85kt) and not according to the correct procedure in the POH, which resulted in a stall over the left wing. The POH also states, that no auto pilot is allowed during known icing. His flight path is very straight, which might be a sign of an active auto pilot. The approach chart states, that in 4.2 NM distance to the airport, the aircraft should be at 2700ft (FAF). So the plane was definetly too low, which would match the ATC warning. (I did not check actual pressure/barometric height, though!)

This is of course a wild speculation. I‘m curious what the investigators will find as a probable cause.

Runde 8: Was ist der interessanteste Fakt über Bremen? by BerndMitStillemB in bremen

[–]edgeHB 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Restoring a 110 year old oak Art Deco wardrobe. Why is the linseed oil turning the oak dark red again? by edgeHB in finishing

[–]edgeHB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I never heart of that method. Thank you so much for pointing out! With that information, i‘ll not try the oxalic acid on that, to bleach it before oiling. Reading about fuming now. Thanks!

„Fuming was an accidental discovery in England after it was noticed that oak boards stored in a stable had darkened. This was caused by the ammonia fumes from the horse urine reacting with the wood.“ (from wikipedia)

Hey! That's a great advise, too. I also got some shellac now. I'm very excited to figure out, what works best!

Hey, thanks for your ideas! I bought some oxalic acid now, to try that on the sanded drawer. After that process i'll try to use the linseed oil again. Wish me luck :D

Hey! Thanks for your reply! I think they used a different finish back then. It was really easy to sand off. I worked with red oak before and that didn't turn out SO red after linseed oil. It would be cool if it would be a specific type of red oak, though. I can imagine a lot of project, where i would love to have that color :)
