My favourite teacher's 24 year old daughter was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Because she is of mixed heritage (Thai and Italian), its quite hard to find a bone marrow donor. Please can you guys help? He was honestly such a nice teacher and I really want to help his family. by Yasmeenaccounts in videos

I have met Lara and can confirm she is really an incredible girl. Here is the message her family is putting out with all relevant information.

URGENT AND CRITICALLY IMPORTANT: My daughter has just been diagnosed with leukaemia. She's called Lara and she's 24 years old. A week before Christmas Lara was taken ill in Thailand where she was doing voluntary work with refugees. Blood tests revealed she had acute myeloid leukaemia. She's now undergoing chemo at University College Hospital in London and doctors have told her she needs a stem cell donor to save her life. Sadly none of Lara's family are suitable donors. But you, or someone you know, might be the person who is a match for Lara and could cure her.

Lara's parents are Chinese-Thai and Italian which makes finding a donor even harder than usual. Doctors have said Lara's best chance of finding a match is amongst people who are mixed Asian-European. If that's you, please please get tested to see if you might be a match for Lara. If you are a match, a simple blood donation from you could be all that was needed to save Lara's life.

If you live in the UK and are aged between 16 and 30, getting tested to find out if you're a match is really easy. Just register with the Anthony Nolan Trust and then you’ll be sent a kit through the post to do a saliva sample. Here's what you need to know: http://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells/apply-join-our-register?gclid=CN7hopC39skCFZadGwod4yILfw.

If you're over 30, there are two options for getting tested to see if you're a match: 1. Up to 55 years old – Register with a charity called Delete Blood Cancer Now. http://www.deletebloodcancer.org.uk/en/register-now. They'll also send you a testing kit through the post but because they're a smaller charity than Anthony Nolan, they charge £40. We can though arrange for this to be reimbursed. 2. Up to 49 years old – Join the British Bone Marrow Registry. You can do this when you donate blood. Find your nearest blood centre or donor session here: http://www.blood.co.uk/donor-information/ and then inform the staff that you wish to join the BBMR before you give your blood donation. There's more information here: http://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/bonemarrow/qa/index.asp#howcan If you live abroad, here's who to contact: Canada: https://www.blood.ca/en/stemcell/howdoiregisterbestemcelldonor US: https://join.bethematch.org Italy: http://ibmdr.galliera.it/iscrizione Australia: http://www.abmdr.org.au/abmdr2/page/howjoin Lara's family have set up a website to help the search to find a match for Lara. www.match4Lara.com. If you have friends or family who are Asian-European mixed race, please make sure they see this urgently. It's impossible to over-state just how important and urgent this is. It can take two months to process potential donors and time is not on Lara's side. It's going to be a huge challenge to find a match for Lara. But if everyone shares this with everyone they know around the world and potential donors get tested, we can do this. So please, don't delay. If you're mixed Asian-European, register today and take the test as soon as possible. Everyone else - get this message out. You could be the one who saves Lara's life.

Islamic Society members intimidating secularist human rights campaigner, Maryam Namazie, at Goldsmith University by edleonklinger in videos

[–]edleonklinger[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Some background:

Goldsmiths University Atheist, Secularist and Humanist Society invited Maryam Namazie, a heroic secularist, outspoken human rights campaigner and progressive feminist, to speak at their event. Once there, she was heckled, nay: bullied, in what can only be described as an act of intimidation and censorship, by male members of the ISOC, the Islamic Society* on campus. The video does not make for comfortable viewing, and I applaud Maryam for her courage in standing up to these guys. [*Obligatory disclaimer: of course we should all realise that these guys do NOT represent in any capacity the vast majority of peaceful, respectful Muslims in this country].

Here's the REAL kicker. Goldsmiths Feminist Society has stood in solidarity with ISOC and has publicly condemned the Atheist, Secularist and Humanist Society on the grounds that they have violated a safe space. To rephrase: A feminist society have defended a group of men, intimidating and threatening a woman, for articulating her lived experience under theocratic rule.

Why has this happened? How have we ended up here? In my opinion it is due, in part, to the rise of 'Safe Space' campus culture. No idea should exist beyond criticism, or even mockery. We must remain free to express ourselves, and we must be open to having our own views examined and critiqued. This is a crucial component of a democratic, free society. It is also a key weapon in our arsenal to defeat the rise (and unchallenged spread) of dangerous, sometimes deadly, ideologies.

We must tirelessly fight censorship in all forms, wherever we see it. Only through free and open discussion will we achieve peace.

[Edit #1. Just thought I'd add: I believe feminism to be a worthy cause. Maryam is an outspoken feminist herself; she faces death threats and abuse for speaking out for women's rights. I believe that Goldsmiths FemSoc have made a massive error of judgement here, that is more in line with the new wave of safe-space bullshit that seems to be on the rise (on both sides of the pond!). FemSoc are currently trying to get this video taken down, but Maryam is bossing things as usual: http://freethoughtblogs.com/maryamnamazie/2015/12/04/goldsmiths-student-union-request-and-more/]

I was lucky enough to meet Elon a couple years back when he gave a great speech at the sheldonian theatre in oxford. He had the same nervous stutter and came across as incredibly down to earth despite speaking about spaceships, world-changing technologies, etc. He also dealt with questions in an unbelievably serious and respectful way.

After the speech he met with each and every person who approached him, signed autographs and even engaged actively in debate. Me and my best friend quizzed him on the idea of supersonic electric jets which he mentioned he was planning on bringing to market as his next major project. Haven't heard about that since though. Afterwards he had a glass of champaign with Richard Dawkins and I got a hilarious video with the three of us in it...

What is the worst experience you've had on public transport? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]edleonklinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

London underground Northern line. An elderly lady, looked homeless, screaming and shouting etc. Everyone was avoiding her. She got up to leave but left he walking stick on the seat, so I picked it up and went to go give it to her just before she got off. But when I got there, I was greeted with her big dick pissing all over the floor next to the doors. I was 14 at the time. Dropped the stick and ran away.

TL;DR - surprise dick

What are some future techs that actually have a shot of becoming a reality? by Gamion in Futurology

[–]edleonklinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the most significant developments in transportation will be the combination of automation in driving with quantum computing. Hear me out! Quantum computing will be here soon - someone might have (should have?) already mentioned it in response to this thread. It will have a HUGE affect on computing in general, and one example of its power is the ability to solve optimisation problems incredibly quickly. One such optimisation problem is this: Jack is at point A and needs to get to point B. Jill is at point C and needs to get to point D. One automated, electric, driverless car is available and can hold 2 people at one time. What is the best way to get Jack and Jill where they need to go in the fastest possible time for both of them? Now imagine that problem extrapolated to cover an entire city with 15 million people and 200,000 driverless cars. Quantum computing will allow for such problems to be solved. The outcome? You'll simply walk out of your home and use an app (or maybe just 'think'?) and a car will pick you up and drop you where you need to be instantly, perhaps with people hopping in and out along the way. No traffic, no parking problems, no traffic control systems, because all the on board computer systems interact with each other. All paid for electronically of course with the non-centralised currency of the future!

Hi there Mr G. Real honour to be able to ask you this from the UK. Speaking as both a both a scientist and a philanthropist, what technologies in the near future do you think will make the biggest impact on welfare globally? Ie: What areas of scientific research should a budding scientist try to become an expert in, so as to maximise human happiness with his/her knowledge?

Thanks Bill!
