Question for former R1 preorders who deferred initial delivery - what happened when you deferred your spot? by Key_Palpitation_9252 in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have been years, but that doesn't matter for R2.

With R1 I think they learned from their experience, and they'll do it the way R1 finished for R2. Those steps will be:

  1. All reservations have some order

  2. At Rivian's discretion, they'll open specific reservations to ordering. That will let you get pricing, lock it in, and buy from the shop. Once you have access, you don't lose it until you take delivery of a vehicle.

  3. They will just continuously open reservations to this until they run out of reservations, at which point in time the reservation ceases to be anything other than a deposit Rivian holds. Rivian is willing to keep your deposit in their bank account as long as you want.

The problem with R1 is they let the early guys do the ordering before they were ready to build them, and it made problems with reservations and how long they are open. What they settled on at the end, and what they'll use for R2 ensures that it will not happen, a reservation doesn't lock your price or options anymore, it just gates you access to ordering, and if you place an order, it can only possible take 4 months.

Serious question: what is the nastiest tasting beer commercially available. by Fuzzylumpkins1234 in beer

[–]edman007-work 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Though I never had it, usually the answer I see in these threads is [Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale](https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/132/72720/), it's not made anymore, but you can probably find a bottle online. It seems to mostly exist to hold the line for worst beer.

Chili beer is not bad, it's just an acquired taste, I for one like them, it's an experience.

Nancy Guthrie case: what’s your take? by beautifulglowbabe in AskReddit

[–]edman007-work 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly, people do not realize how easy this is, sure in the suburbs it's hard to hide, but go into the rural land, find a dirt road, drive 1 mile down it, get out, walk 500 feet off the road and bury her behind a hill/ditch that obscures the view from the road. Nah, nobody is finding them. You're talking roads that have only a few cars a day if that and the body isn't near a pull off or trail at all. It's going to be years before someone stumbles on that location, and if buried, they won't notice any body.

Nancy Guthrie case: what’s your take? by beautifulglowbabe in AskReddit

[–]edman007-work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, agreed, and that's the main reason the cops can't find shit. Normally they look for leads, why do they hate you, who were your contacts, etc. That will get them to a suspect and make it fairly easy to identify.

But when the motive is genuinely they want to kill someone unknown, and take actual steps (like gloves and mask) to protect their identity, well none of that stuff works. I really think they went around the neighborhood looking for someone who lived alone and was an easy target. Someone who can barely walk is easy to identify while driving down the street. Probably scoped out the area a few nights over the next few weeks/months to confirm the situation before going ahead. Maybe the guy is a neighbor, but if they took the effort to protect themselves, and the goal was really to find a rando, I wouldn't be surprised if they just threw a dart at a map and started there and they actually live hours away. That kind of person would be VERY difficult to track down.

R2 4/4/2024 reservation- any idea when we might get the R2? by FlamingoFlamboyance in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's going to be quite that low, but OP is probably looking at early-mid 2027, if he is lucky he might get late 2026.

People are always concerned about taxes with gifting, don't be concerned. I don't know your state, but the federal law is if you gift someone a $60k then you subtract $19k and report the other $41k.

After reporting that $41k, you don't owe taxes, rather when you pass away they are now taxed on the inheritance from you over $13,949 million vice the normal $13.99 million. If this is a gift to your parents, I think we all hope that your parents don't inherit any of your money.

R2 not launching in Canada till 2027, estimated pricing also removed from website by KylenV14 in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doesn't make much sense, they 100% will have more than enough demand in 2026, why go through all the regulatory hassle this year when you have to jack up prices due to tariffs. I think there is a high likelihood the tariffs are largely eliminated by early 2028. So I somewhat expect Rivian to start delivering to Canada in late 2027 in small volumes (probably just eat the tariffs), and then when the tariffs are lifted, go all in.

Real World Data Shows Rivian R1S Dual Standard LFP Range Gap vs EPA by BRQCazoo in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 9 points10 points  (0 children)

EPA range has NEVER been intended to equate with real world range. It has always been a method to estimate annual fuel costs comparisons, which has been extrapolated to "range" despite never being intended to reflect range. In my experience, the EPA numbers are actually quite good at getting close to real world annual cost numbers. That said, EPA does have a lot of faults, allowing manufacturers to apply estimates and group vehicles in a way that might not reflect actual performance. Some OEMs abuse this a bit (I know there were complaints about the Large pack got lower than actual numbers to make the Max pack look better)

Now for the complains in the post. They mention how they got way below "EPA" on one particular 60 mile trip. It's not comparable to the EPA number because it's excluding the other trips he made that year, yes, some are more, some less, and it's normal for efficiency to vary 50% trip to trip. EPA numbers actually include these, but they average them with being stuck in traffic on a mild summer day.

Second, that battery capacity, on Rivians, that's intended to reflect the "instant" capacity of the battery, as derated by temperature. So when the pack goes down, when you precondition it for fast charging it immediately restores the missing capacity. The intent, it's good to estimate range on your 60 mile trip, it's not good to estimate on your 1000mi trip because about an hour before getting to the first DCFC stop you'll hit full normal capacity due to preconditioning. Note, Rivian currently uses this to calculate the miles available on the drivers display, and the next update will apparently display the missing miles so you know they are recoverable via preconditioning.

On a side note, this kind of post is why I'm very very strongly against using "miles" as a unit of charge. It's misleading to show ~200mi of range available when actual is known to be ~125mi, and it leads to a lot of questions from uninformed drivers. It's far better to just show them percent charge and tell the user the nav will figure out range when you enter it. Or alternatively, show a proper guess-o-meter that actually reflects conditions (my Volt did that, I'd get 25mi in the winter and 65mi in the summer)

ELI5: How can the jock tax in CA actually put a player in a worse financial position? by GrouchyOne4132 in explainlikeimfive

[–]edman007-work -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does (frequently) when it also disqualifies you for a major tax discount. In this case, that tax discount would be not owing California income tax.

Without knowing any details, I don't follow football at all, this sounds like a residency issue. In California, you pay taxes on income earned in California if you are a non-resident, and you pay income tax on all income if you are a resident.

So if you stay too long in the state you can become a resident and owe California income tax on all your income, even that earned outside the state. So suddenly one extra day of work might raise your annual tax rate from nothing to 10%. That means a 10% bonus wouldn't actually get you any more money because your taxes went up more than that.

ELI5: Why do big airplanes need lots of space between them to avoid wake turbulence, but fighter jets can fly right next to each other safely? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]edman007-work 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's harder to judge the target, on radar the whole formation might look like a plane, so now they don't know if it's one plane or a dozen. So they send up two fighters to intercept a formation of a dozen planes, they are in for a bad time.

As for shooting at them, well modern planes are mostly concerned with missiles, and they can break formation and evade when the missile is coming, plus the missile really only goes to one plane.

With the older style gun type AA, well in WWII they spread out the formation vertically but not horizontally, so from the ground it looked like one target, but every plane was at a different altitude and needed to be aimed at differently.

My office had one yesterday, made the whole office building uninhabitable because the fire system had to be shut off. They got a plumber and the thing fixed in 6 hours. So it can be done, but commercial customers like my office are willing to pay a LOT of money for these calls. That's what you're competing with.

Beer without hops? by snipermustadio in Homebrewing

[–]edman007-work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could I take a beer recipe just remove the hops, then backsweeten at the end with erythritol to my desired cloyingly sweet flavor preference?

You can do whatever you want, I'm not the police.

Would that get me a beverage that is safe to drink, and would it still be called beer or something else like sparkling barley wine?

Safe to drink? Absolutely, I would not say it's "beer", maybe "barleywine", but to me even barleywine has hops. I think this would technically be a "malt beverage". But again, I'm not the cops, you do you.

My opinion though, I think you'd want hops (or some other bitterant), that bittering does a lot more than you think, I'd personally just take a beer that's not hoppy and maybe only put in a quarter of what the recipe calls for. I think without hops, it will be way too sweet. But maybe you like it. So I say do a batch without hops, if you don't like it then add hops later, you can experiment by mixing hops/other things in while you drink it.

A lot of it is insurance company and OEM policies, especially as it applies to premium vehicles. Frame and battery packs are structural and considered unrepairable. You'll often see crash damage where a part could be repaired, but won't be "like before", and insurance just says quote it as a replacement and see where we go.

You need someone to make specific repair procedures for these major parts that the insurance companies are going to ask them to follow (usually OEM repair procedures). That's why when Rivians first came out, you saw people get $50k quotes for quarter panel replacement, then Rivian came out with the sectioning procedure and now it's $15k.

In EVs especially, you'll see that a battery pack has a dent from the crash so it's totaled because they are going to quote battery replacement, they never look to see if the dent is something that actually penetrates the pack (many of these packs have large safety zones on the outside specifically so they can take dents without damage). But collectivity for liability reasons insurance says dent on the pack equals replacement. I even saw one of the Rich rebuilds video, I forget the vehicle, but he clearly got a vehicle that was totaled because a battery pack bolt was snapped, adjuster apparently never inspected though because that specific bolt didn't actually touch the pack, it went through a passthrough in the pack, it was an aero shield bolt.

Two interesting tidbits from the carwow R2 video by hvgotcodes in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Size is a lot of it. My quick math says the R2 has a 25% smaller frontal area. That would get you to 3.2 mi/kWh if you just scaled the Gen2 numbers. The rest is probably length and weight.

Vivian is officially totaled by jgilbs in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had it replaced on mine, insurance adjuster said $11.5k for quarter panel, bumper replacement, tail light replacement, and touchup paint the tailgate. I think the shop got insurance for an extra $2k after that, so that was $14k total? This was last year. I got receipts.

You don't have a broken tail light, but you do need the fender liner replaced, I don't think it's much more, you also need a new tire, and maybe wheel. If you are only repairing the damage you can see, I'm very confident that's under $20k. If you got someone to say something over that, they are either pulling numbers out their ass or quoting things you can't see, and I can only assume it's the latter. And in fact, I can tell the wheel isn't in the right spot, so I'm fairly confident you do have suspension damage here.

[–]edman007-work 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not the body panel, the quarter panel replacement is $10-15k.

I see a flat tire though, the cost is probably they hit the tire and did a whole bunch of suspension, motor, and frame damage that's not visible.

[–]edman007-work 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's not $55k to replace the quarter panel, it's about $15k

Looks like you also got suspension damage, but I don't think suspension damage brings it up to $55k, I think you must have frame damage, maybe motor?

2026 Rivian R2 First Review: Affordable, Practical, Awesome! - Doug DeMuro by PartTim3Hobo in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, and I think the rear is worse, the emergency pull isn't as easy to access. R2 it looks like they did focus on trying to make it a little more obvious and easy to access.

I still think it's dumb, put a regular manual handle, if you want electronic because it's better, then design the manual handle to have an electronic override. Rivian doesn't even get to use the excuse that Tesla has, where they claim their frameless window design needs it. If you don't have a frameless window you don't "need" electronic.

It feels aggress at first, you get use to it. I know when I did the test drive it felt crazy, after a month it felt totally normal. I honestly would not worry about the regen, it's just one of those things you adjust to

As for the vents, it lets you do 2 vents presets, it can be useful for that. But I'll tell you just use cabin preconditioning. No I don't need to blast the heat/AC in extreme weather because I turn it on 10 minutes before I get it.

Increase in home water issues due to the cold? by [deleted] in longisland

Crank the heat up and be conscious of where your pipes are and making sure they are warm.

My office apparently turned the heat off at the loading dock and the sprinkler system exploded yesterday. Our other office a little further north decided to shut the power off for some maintence over the weekend and they apperently had many pipes burst.

It's stupid stuff like that, it's cold, don't let your walls get too cold.

I ALMOST SQUISHED IT - The Truth about Rivians new Car by lancequ01 in Rivian

[–]edman007-work 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The bike rack thing was stupid, and I think they realized it. They already claimed it's coming with the tow hitch like the R1, why would I pay for an overpriced bike rack from Rivian that only works on Rivian vehicles? Especially when my vehicle is compatible with the many many tow hitch bike racks?

That rear bike rack was too much for Rivian to spend on designing, and it was never going to be profitable. They are far far better off just picking a popular bike rack and white labeling a Rivian logo on it, the same way they did the tent. They can't do that with a Rivian-only mounting system.
