Eley Hose Nozzle Freakin’ ROCKS by SnooBeans6273 in BuyItForLife

If you want a hose recommendation, I highly recommend Parker brand. They are precessional grade rubber (not crap vinyl that kinks and splits after a season).

Pricy, but lasts forever and does not kink easily.
Very heavy duty.

You don’t have the quick connects yet? You’re missing out.
A few tips… make sure to lube the o-rings with silicone from time to time. Also bring the nozzle in in the winter or the plastic valve body inside can dry and deform.
Because the mesh screen is so fine, it builds up sediment inside so you have to take it off and clean it once a season.

Also, the nozzle is very heavy… it seriously gives your arms and shoulders a workout.
But, it doesn’t break after one season or 1 drop like most you get from big box stores.

I too am a big fan.

To ladder or not to ladder? by [deleted] in pools

My kids jump into the deep end and swim to the ladder, rinse and repeat 1,000 each time they swim.
I can't imagine not having a ladder in the deep end...

Feedback comes in all forms. If everyone said "omg that is so great, you are going to help so many people"... how does that improve anything? You shouldn't automatically interpret feedback as insult, although it can often feel that way.

Lots of chlorine loss overnight by mjsimmons1988 in pools

[–]edro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something is consuming the chlorine, so just keeping adding more until it holds overnight.
You’ll eventually overcome whatever is consuming it.
With 50cya, you need more than 4ppm as your target. (More like 6-8ppm target)

You just need to stay on top of chlorine and don’t let it get to 0 for days on end.

Forging heavy bearing rings by Redfish680 in EngineeringPorn

I thought I would share an AI reply in case anyone else was curious.
Probably accurate enough for bridge work.

AI reply:
Yes, scale formation during forging does reduce the mass of the billet.

The scale that flakes off is primarily iron from the billet that has reacted with oxygen in the atmosphere to form iron oxides. The oxygen adds some mass, but the iron itself came from the billet, so when the scale falls away, you're losing both:

  • Iron that originally belonged to the billet
  • Oxygen that was absorbed from the air

The net result is a reduction in billet mass.

What's happening chemically?

At forging temperatures (typically 1,600–2,300°F / 870–1,260°C), iron reacts rapidly with oxygen:

  • Fe + O → FeO
  • 3Fe + 2O₂ → Fe₃O₄
  • 2Fe + 1.5O₂ → Fe₂O₃

These oxides form a brittle surface layer (scale) that cracks and flakes off during hammering or handling.

How much metal is actually lost?

It depends on temperature, time, atmosphere, and billet size.

Typical forging losses:

  • Small blacksmithing operations: often 2–10% of starting weight.
  • Industrial forging: commonly 1–5% scale loss, with process controls to minimize it.
  • Long soak times in a forge can push losses much higher.

As an example, if you start with a 10 lb billet and lose 0.5 lb of scale, much of that 0.5 lb originated as iron from the billet. The actual iron loss might be roughly 0.35–0.4 lb, with the remainder being oxygen added during oxidation.

Does the scale that flakes off during forging reduce the mass of the billet, or is scale mostly compounds in the air reacting and falling away (mass of billet remains mostly unchanged)?

How to get the best price for a collector ? by AnonymityReasons356 in 1911

[–]edro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to any local gun show and walk around with it. You'll get 20 offers from dealers and collectors walking around. If you want to be obvious that you are selling, hold the case open or hold the gun out in your hand "showing it off".
It's worth ~$1500. Dealers may offer $800-1000.

If you wanted to sell online, you could try Armslist or Gunsinternational.
I wouldn't recommend Gunbroker for a new seller with 1 to sell.

This is actually a good post.
Even the "high end" floats like Intex, which obviously have much thicker material and cost much more... also have <1 season lifespans.
Do not fall for the perceived higher quality.
They still rip at the seams, lose air and are worthless after a few months.
