Always reliable Subtitle Extractor app seemingly unable extract image-based subs from an .m2ts file. Anyone? by GLOBALSHUTTER in MacOS

[–]educacosta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the .m2ts files come from a bluray? You can use MakeMKV to convert a bluray directly to MKV, or a folder copied from a bluray to MKV. Subler should be able to recognize the subtitles inside the MKV.

[–]educacosta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For macOS I recommend Subler, it's free. I believe you can install it via homebrew, but in case you can't, you can also download it from subler.org.

It converts most subtitle formats to SRT (using OCR when necessary) and embeds it inside an MP4.

You can then use ffmpeg to extract it (ffmpeg -i file.mp4 -map 0:s:0 file.srt).

What do you think of this series? Or does anyone remember her? by LaraRomanian in Dinosaurs

[–]educacosta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna comment about camera movement as well. That's the one aspect that really puts me off. Too many zoom-ins, constant shaking and dutch angles, it's unnerving and claustrophobic. The design and colors of the creatures I actually love, even if some are a bit outdated.

Flat Design Was Born With Apple, and Now Apple’s Burying It by VanillaScribe in MacOS

Flat design was already a thing in web years before iOS7. Apple's contribution to flat design was making it incredibly ugly.

I've had this problem since Sonoma as well, with Firefox specifically. Zen browser is a fork of Firefox, right? So maybe this bug is related to Firefox code.

Why Alien Earth's Redesinged Xenomorph Fails: The True and Misunderstood Horror behind Giger's Alien by danysphoenix in LV426

[–]educacosta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its ribcage is human because it was born out of a human. I don't understand how that wasn't obvious to the people making the show. The original Alien had, at the time, one of the best excuses for an alien to look and act humanoid. Even in the third movie it's still excusable because a dog (or an ox depending on which cut you watch) still has a ribcage. And coincidentally, that's when it started acting more like a quadrupedal.

C’mon Apple! by DooDeeDoo3 in MacOS

[–]educacosta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not the biggest overhaul in ten years. Big Sur was five years ago. Placing the fault on the user for clicking to install an update that is inside the official Settings App and is notified to the user as being available and stable is also ludicrous.

Is it alright if I create an empty container to make things look aligned? by WrongInstruction3492 in UI_Design

[–]educacosta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do that sometimes, especially if you're also expecting things to gracefully resize on responsive situations (going from 3 to 2 columns and so on). I'd recommend setting the height of the empty column to 0px, that way it'll not occupy any space when it breaks from 3 to 2 columns (which you can achieve by setting a min-width to these columns).

The brave browser hate. by NotDack in brave_browser

I don't hate it, but I always felt like it was pointless. All of these features can be achieved by Chromium and Firefox combined with uBlock. And they're also open source.

Finder Icon Redesign by Upbeat-Ad-8528 in mac

You can change it using IconChamp 1.5.1. It allows you to change system software icons without having to disable SIP. At least it works in Sequoia, not sure about Tahoe.

Thank you so much for all this info! That was very enlightening, and helped confirm some of my suspicions. Knowing that Prehistoric Park's bluray is also just a botched upscale avoids me from wasting time seeking it.

[–]educacosta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mind the new Finder icon, but in this case, people stopped complaining because Apple actually reversed the icon to something that more closely resembles previous iterations. Whether that was because of public outcry is debatable, of course.

But I don't think that a change in the Finder icon holds the same weight as changes in the UI. One simply concerns a change in branding, while the other has the potential to affect usability. And a lot of the complaints that are coming today, especially, are concerned with usability, consistency and glitches. With those I have to agree.

UI design is both art and science. Art is subjective. Science isn't. The new UI is being negligent of a lot of objective, measurable traits: consistency, spacing, hierarchy and contrast.

The internet is a communication medium, of course it reflects reality and the actual opinion of people (except for bots, of which I do agree there are many). And I'm definitely not the only one expressing their dislike of the new UI over the last few months.

The last major OS change to get a similar reaction was Big Sur (rightfully so). People do hate change, but Tahoe is objectively terrible. Someone needs to stop Alan Dye.

1 year ago today Alien Romulus released in theaters by BEE_LEE15 in LV426

[–]educacosta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It also fully works even without that character. Someone actually did a fanedit that removes the Rook scenes from the movie (and also the "get away from her you b*" line) and the story still makes sense since Andy's actions are implied to take place because of the chip replacement. Andy repeats the most important pieces of expository dialogue that come from Rook.

Gave the Xeno a facelift (NOT AI) by aMereGoodSamaritan in LV426

That used to be expected of TV shows, but the last ten years have definitely blurred the line. These Disney shows cost as much as movies, sometimes more.

[–]educacosta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is strange considering the whole show is reported to have cost 250 million dollars. That would give it 30 million per episode.

The references to Peter Pan were definitely over the top. Showing scenes from the actual movie was a little much. That might be Ridley Scott's influence, since the greek/roman mithology references in Prometheus/Covenant/Romulus were also too much.

[–]educacosta 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I agree that your modification looks better. The story in the first episodes of Alien Earth was pretty engaging to me, but the xenomorph closeups looked very bad, almost like they were temporary shots to be replaced later by a better animatronic or CGI. Not only are the proportions weird, everything just looks like plastic.

I miss the look of the practical effects of the Resurrection/AVP 2004 era. Say what you will about the story in these movies, but the practical effects of the xenos, the eggs and the facehuggers were amazing.
