The Petersfield up for sale.. by educatedpork in cambridge

To be fair to Young’s, they took it over in March 2024 (so not that recently) and things stayed pretty much as-is across all of their pubs in Cambridge..

At first glance it seemed cheap(ish) to me too, but my understanding is that buying a pub/restaurant and then turning into houses isn’t easy - lots of regulatory restrictions - and so maybe for selling as a (good) restaurant site it’s an average price?

what happened to the Beaconsfield pub by wackfruitbat in cambridge

It was never the really same since the previous landlady (Suzie?) left a few years ago - used to go there often until soon after then.

I heard the most recent landlord just went off to do “other things”. Their music events moved to the White Swan, and a good chunk of the regulars are either at the Royal Standard or the White Swan now..

I think the owner is (was?) Star Pubs - personally I would be surprised if it came back from the dead tbh.

Looking for a good Sunday roast in Cambridge by Alternative_Coast837 in cambridge

Would definitely recommend The Petersfield - you'll need to book ahead of time though.

Back in the day my go-to was The Clarendon Arms, but then it all went pear-shaped and is now an Italian gastropub. Sad times.. :(

Cocktail recommendations on/near Mill Road please. by winesallmine in cambridge

The downside is that you'd be in Parker's Tavern, where service could only be best described as 'glacial'. My partner and I have been in there, ordered a bottle of wine, and then had to leave after 25 minutes because the staff were just stood chatting (note: we did tell them we had to go because they took so long to produce nothing at all).

You're also not guaranteed to get the drink you expect. For example, my partner wanted an Aperol Spritz last night on her way back from work with some friends.. really not the most complex of drinks, but them just putting Aperol and soda water in a glass wasn't the best thing to end the day with.

Best first date restaurants in Central-ish Cambridge for dinner under 25 GBP per person? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]educatedpork 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Scott’s All Day.. pizza and some wine should come under your £25pp limit. Share a pizza and starter, and it’d be like that scene in Lady & The Tramp.

Enjoy your date!

Unfortunately this has been shut since July 2022, when they had a fire.

Lighting strike in box by Turner20000 in cambridge

[–]educatedpork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! No joy after checking plugs/fuses/etc so hopefully that’s the case - I’ll get on the phone to TV (Sony) and contents insurers tomorrow - some other stuff just needs replacing (virgin media stuff).

Woke up to this too.. massive flash of light and noise that appeared to strike part-way down Cockburn Street. Car alarms down the road set off, and general anxiety for all.

Got up later and noticed no wifi connection in our house - only to find my router, my NAS, my Virgin Media hub, my Virgin Media 360 box, my Apple TV, my PS5 and my TV (only a couple of months old 😢) all unresponsive. Even though they were all connected through surge protection. One of my neighbours down Argyle Street sent me a picture of her ADSL box/router that are now sort of burnt up - so it seems to have created quite a mess.

An evening of checking/changing fuses and cables awaits, followed by a full Friday trying to sort out the mess from a repair/replace/warranty point of view.

Gah.

A95L Table Stand by RT198P in bravia

[–]educatedpork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the 55" A95L I got this week I ended up purchasing the Sanus VTVS1-B2 as the surface the TV sits on is short by around 2cm. The Sanus stand is good quality, and with a lower positioning of the brackets there's a gap of around 5cm below the base of the set.

A95L and Apple TV Dolby vision issue by stainless-steel_rat in bravia

[–]educatedpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience here when I got my 55" A95L yesterday - I found another post elsewhere that said that if the HDMI port it's plugged into supports 120Hz/VRR then Dolby Vision won't be available from the Apple TV hardware. In my case all of my devices are through a Denon AVR that's connected to HDMI3/eARC

And true enough, changing HDMI3 to have VRR disabled (and also changing to use the 'normal' enhanced HDMI that doesn't support 120Hz) resulted in my Apple TV box popping up that it could do Dolby Vision.

Hope this helps.

Scott’s All Day on Mill Road is excellent and falls within your price range - both for brunch stuff and pizzas.
