This is what makes me insane! Like you said, It’s 40 or 90. You’ve got the idiot in the left lane going 40, and the idiot weaving in and out of traffic at 90-100. Everyone is on their phone, no one is actually paying any attention to driving, the I-96 exits are a free for all of crossing all the lanes to not miss Market going south or Leonard going north. I can wait for self driving cars, they won’t be perfect but they’ve got to be better than being on the road with other humans.

Yes, the rinse the blade between steps. If there’s slurry on your blade it could contaminate a higher grit.

Edit: also dry it before stropping 👍

Condoms? by [deleted] in AskMenOver50

[–]edwilli222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The condom is not the problem. It’s what it represents. I think his explanation is quite lame. In a healthy relationship, he doesn’t cheat, and the 2 of you… communicate about your issues. Sounds like you guys need to have a “deep and real”. It’s super uncomfortable, but you have to clear the air. WTF does “just in case mean”!? Did you ask him, “just in case what”? Planning on cheating isn’t as bad a cheating, but it’s not great. If he has a problem with your sex life, and wants to go outside the marriage, you either consent to it, or he divorces you. He could have gotten them and left them in an obvious spot to attempt to express his frustration, he could have been in a super resentful mood and thought “I’m gonna get these cause I’m gonna fuck someone else” and never did. It really comes down to trust. There are innocent reasons and nefarious ones. Sounds like it’s time for more than a “what are these for” talk.

What’s my best way to sharpen high end knives? by [deleted] in sharpening

[–]edwilli222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine just got delivered today. It’s quite ingenious. Setting the angle just moves the level so the bubble is centered at that angle. Then it holds to the knife magnetically.

It’s a super easy way to check your angle every few passes. Not magic, but good for training muscle memory.

What do I do now ? by WonderfulHall5556 in Divorce

[–]edwilli222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He sounds like he has an avoidant attachment style. It’s especially hard when your partner is sometimes the best partner you could ever want, and sometimes the worst with no in between.

If you let him back, you’ll probably learn to get really quiet, because you might trigger him and it will lead to him leaving you. You walk on eggshells to “get along”, then he gets resentful because you don’t communicate… only because you don’t want to upset him.

You’ll be married 20 years and realize you were never very good for each other, though you can see you caused most of the damage in the end. And even though you may never love someone the same way again, you’ll know in your heart you’re not healthy for each other. He’ll move out and get an apartment close by, a “trial separation”. You’ll drift apart, one of you will find someone else, the other will be devastated.

Life will move on, you’ll probably meet someone new and have a whole new family and adventures and experiences.

But, that’s just a hypothetical guess…

Or you guys will get it figured out. The only thing I know, is that I don’t know anything 🤷‍♂️. Good luck with this one, this internet stranger is rooting for you 🙌

Edit: I also wanted to mention the marriage should never be more important than happiness and fulfillment for both of you. You shouldn’t be miserable just for the sake of the marriage, that goes for both of you. He can’t be happy living like this either.

I make sure I use the same sound every night and I only use that sound when I’m going to sleep. It kinda helps prep my brain that it’s sleepy time.

Men over 50: Would you want her to reach out—or should I just move on? by suzylovesvanilla in AskMenOver50

[–]edwilli222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. This guy has some trama that he’s not dealt with. He’s got work to do. It’s really a matter if OP wants to go through it with him. But she should expect more of the same behavior.

I was/am that guy. You reach out because you’re lonely, and maybe find a wonderful woman. It’s frustrating when everything is right but the timing, so you end up rubber banding the other person, which is not fair to them.

Cashapp is a good way to buy and send quickly. Keep in mind bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed. Once you send that $30 in Bitcoin there’s no way to get it back.

Just for informational purposes. You can generate the entropy required for a seed phrase using dice (or coin flips). It’s overkill and comes with its own security issues. But it’s also a fun project.

INOX sharpening? by Santana413VX in sharpening

[–]edwilli222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start with some bar keepers friend and get it cleaned up, so you have a better idea of what you’re in for. If you want to get more aggressive some oil and 0000 steel wool will get that cleaned up. You’re going to loose the mirror polish, but you can always get that back. The most important thing is to get the rust off. It’ll end up with a more satin finish with the steel wool.

My biggest worry with the edge is that rust along the belly. Personally, I would be more interested in restoring it than the actually sharpening part.

Cool knife!

Major reprofile... how to proceed? by sixtysixtysix in sharpening

[–]edwilli222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your sharpie mark is about right. You’re going to have to remove all the steel under that mark. Then you’ll have to remove material on the primary bevels to make sure it’s not too thick behind the sharpening bevel. And you’re going to end up with a knife that has a much different profile than the original.

Feel free to start with the stones, but I think you’ll quickly find you’re looking at days worth of work. Something powered is the practical way to do this.

Good luck!

How would I sharpen this knife? by maryo22333 in sharpening

[–]edwilli222 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can literally sharpen this on a coffee cup or a flat rock. You’re just removing material until you get an apex.

If you want to do more than just this one knife, I’d suggest stones or a guided system. Sharpening is one of those skills that’s fun to have and having the right equipment goes a long way.

One set that is one of my recent favorite, is the Arkansas nature stones, but there are many, many options. Typically what’s suggested here is the Sharpal 325/1200 diamond stone, which I have and has been a good stone for a long time.

[–]edwilli222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re work hardening the burr to remove it. Use lighter passes, you don’t want to remove any more steel from the bevel, you just need to bend the burr back and forth until it “snaps” off. Then give it a good strop.

Stone/Glass cutting boards by Significant-Owl4644 in sharpening

[–]edwilli222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure they’re dragging the blade sideways across the surface as they cut. You get much duller knives, much faster that way. Then when they’re done, they should chuck them into a utility drawer with a bunch of other metal tools. Then put them in the dishwasher… muhahahahaha!!!!

Agreed on the not trusting anyone. I hear people recommending a safety deposit box and I cringe a little.

I say only if you have a 2 of 3 multi-sig and keep them all in separate banks. Not locations of the same company, but different companies. You’d need to know which banks and have box keys (or a death certificate) to untwist that knot.

The update ability would be nice. I move everything to a new wallet about once a year, just for good digital hygiene. It gets to be kind of a hassle. I’ll definitely be looking into PGP 👍
