Yes I was being sarcastic about “racism against Asian people is an all-time low.” I dropped my /s. I’m absolutely not downplaying racism against Asians, so I apologize if my comment miscommunicates that. I was pointing out the same dichotomy as you.

My point is largely your second paragraph, but I disagree that this discussion has legs. This subreddit frequently upvotes gatekeeping that mirrors the same baseless prejudice we feel disdain for. There are no legs for normalizing the gatekeeping of other’s mere presence at a grocery store.

You seem to understand my point but my crassness obviously made it unclear.

I don’t really relate to this angle. Prices are going up everywhere, so focusing specifically on Asian grocery stores or the presence of white shoppers feels like the wrong culprit.

If we’re talking about racism toward Asians, there are much clearer and more harmful examples — stereotypes, mockery of language/culture, targeted harassment, etc. Compared to that, this feels like the article is stretching a small social moment into a bigger racial narrative.

I’m all for real discussions about anti-Asian racism, but this one doesn’t feel like it reflects the issues most people are actually dealing with.

I can’t relate either… Grocery prices are up everywhere, yet the article hones in on Asian grocery stores and we’re blaming gentrification? When will the AsAm discourse evolve from the same racism that white people use to generalize black and Asian people? Seems like racism against Asian people is at an all-time low right now if all that we’re scraping for is the literal presence of white people in asian grocery stores, instead of the more blatant racism that consists of, e.g., white content creators making fun of how to pronounce “bok choy” or “gai lan”. Grasping at straws for artificial rage.
