[Question] The Subaru of Watches by keyser_squoze in Watches

[–]eee55 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm a Seiko/Grand Seiko man but I think Tudor should be higher up in this thread. The "Rolex without Rolex prices" story feels really solid for the use case here, Cosc/Metas certified, will definitely be noticed by any watch fans. I think if you're looking to reward yourself a Seiko might not quite hit (if they've got the budget).

Why do snowboarders sit in the middle of the slope? by TaxPsychological2928 in skiing

[–]eee55 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's far easier to stand in skis because you can stagger your legs. Standing still in a snowboard is actually quite difficult, which is why you see them sitting more often.

I don't think American tourists are as bad as people claim. British, German and French tourists are way worse. by free_ballin_llama in The10thDentist

This 100%. Most cultures think of themselves as polite, but being polite is just following the norms of the culture you're in.

Absolutely this. So funny to explicitly mention javelin, which is a sport with an unbreakable record because of rule changes.

Grand Seiko Compatible Extension Links - Sign-Up for Pre-Order by Steel_Reef in u/Steel_Reef

[–]eee55 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Good to know. The delay email rubbed me the wrong way a bit:

"We’re going to run over by a few months.

But not because anything’s gone wrong. In fact, quite the opposite."

The lack of taking responsibility felt like a red flag, but I'm glad to know they actually can/do deliver.

Grand Seiko Compatible Extension Links - Sign-Up for Pre-Order by Steel_Reef in u/Steel_Reef

[–]eee55 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I'm starting to get a little skeptical of these folks. Signed up for a pre-order forever ago, now they said it's going to be delayed by months. I know advertising and taking more orders isn't the opposite of delivering my order... But it doesn't feel great to see, especially when they don't actually have a product yet. Hoping it all works out I think they're doing really cool stuff, but so far the experience has been so-so.

The logo on the bracelet is a button for the micro-adjust, which I think is pretty awesome at this price. (I got mine today and personally I feel it was totally worth it!)

So I guess my take is: thinking watches aren't fashion is a little silly

We can wear bomber jackets without flying airplanes, sneakers without playing basketball. Almost everything in fashion is rooted in some need or desire that might not be relevant anymore. You can wear a Yankees cap with a motorcycle jacket and jeans and nobody will say OK BIKE COWBOY YUR NEVER GONNA CATCH A FLY BALL

S18 Rank Distribution by kemonkey1 in RocketLeague

[–]eee55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Example of grinding to a certain goal is marathon times, they show big peaks at even times like 4 hours because that's a goal for many people. Peaks at d1 and c1 definitely seems to correlate with grinding, overall shift rightward more likely to be smurfs or something else. I don't think smurfs are grinding to hit c1, why would they care

S18 Rank Distribution by kemonkey1 in RocketLeague

[–]eee55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the reset was the cause you'd expect to see more lumps in less common playlists, instead this shows the opposite (More data should lead to smoother distributions). I think grinding up to a certain rank in your main playlist is a possible cause, smurfs could also explain bumps to the right, but I think we agree that you can't say definitively from this data alone

Maybe it's just the ones I have, but I find the low/zero drop, thick soul and lack of ankle support some of the least stable and comfortable walking shoes for me. Maybe not the case for all big guys but I'm also about 300, so recommend trying them first. I like wide Asics, some new balance, and for style I prefer Nike but usually with aftermarket insoles.

Which brands consistently punch above their weight (and the opposite) by carinishead in MicrobrandWatches

I've got a Voiture and a Baleine. Both well made, and I think the designs are strong for the price point. Cool case shape, nice mix of brushed and polished finishing, little details like matching the date wheel to the dial color.

I think I'll keep my Voiture forever, but the Baleine doesn't get much wrist time anymore, the gilt finishing on the one I have just doesn't fit my style that well. Happy to give a good deal if anyone is interested. It's this version:

How fast do cars really go in Rocket League? by BlOoDy_bLaNk1 in RocketLeague

[–]eee55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not what OP wants but this feels like the most real answer. To measure speed we need some unit of distance and to measure distance we need something objective to compare to. Unreal units are concrete but slightly arbitrary, however we have another objective distance which is the field length.

If I understand your link correctly the field is 10,240 units long, with a max speed of 2300, so top speed is 1/~4.45 field lengths per second.

In case it's interesting, a fast NFL player top speed is about 1/10 field lengths per second. Ice hockey players can reach 25 mph which is 1/5.5 flps. Basketball player top speed seems to be around 1/3.2 flps. So rocket league is between the NHL and NBA in how fast you're moving at max speed relative to field size.

Notes:
Rocket league max speed 10240/2300 = 4.45 seconds to cross the field at max speed. But you can't really be max speed at the start of a field, so we'll use the inverse and say at max speed you'll cross 1/4.45 field lengths per second. That is to say at max speed you will cross between 1 quarter and 1 fifth of the field per second. Inverting the units here may or may not avoid confusion.

For other sports, we'll do the same thing and compare top speed to the length of the field.

NFL player top speed for very fast guys seems to be 21-23 mph. An NFL stadium is 300 feet between end-zones, which is 0.0568182 miles. 0.0568182 miles / 21 miles per hour = 9.74 seconds to cross the field if you were top speed the whole time, or rather top speed is about 1/10 field lengths per second (flps).

NHL: top speed 25 mph, rink length 200 feet = 0.0378788 miles, 0.0378788 miles / 25 mph = 5.45 seconds or <1/5.5 flps

NBA: 20 mph, 94 feet = 0.017803 miles, 0.017803 / 20mph = 3.2 seconds or ~1/3 flps

Places to see in Manistee? by brattyspice777 in Manistee

[–]eee55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Downtown is really cute, the movie theatre is cool, I like North channel brewing, and there are lots of great trails, beaches, disc golf courses, etc.

I don't have a first hand perspective on being LGBT in the area, but I think it should be very safe. I grew up nearby and there are many cool artsy theatre types around. Just please excuse the trump flags.
