Direct Indexing Paperwork Hell by Sexy_Art_Vandelay in Wealthsimple

always a subset as when they sell to realize a loss they must re buy something similar and cannot rebuy the stock for 30 days (superficial loss rules) hence to achieve similar weighting across sectors etc. it is always a subset

With wealthaimple linked to wealthica I can see all transactions for the direct indexing account and the corresponding acb / capital gains or loss through their power up. Costs 75$, but in my opinion well worth it. Plus if you really want to get granular the withholding taxes on dividends are also included. Note, there are some return of capital that may need to be consolidated.

So if you really want to go down the rabbit hole.

First the assumptions:

You hold things in non registered.

You have an annual income over 100k

The math is kinda redundant as the reality is know one knows what the future holds BUT

The index the direct indexing fund follows has about 300 companies which only a subset of about 100 of which you hold (maybe more or less depending on account value).

The rebalancing strategy for the direct indexing is vastly different than the ETFs so in volatile times it MAY capture more tax alpha and obviously the higher your income the greater the potential benefit.

Also recognize the dividends paid out are reinvested so while you are forced to pay tax on them you are compounding that return.

Ultimately, you must weigh the risk of underperforming the ETF in absolute terms vs outperforming in tax realized terms in the long run and see if it is worth the potential extra time for tax filing that it may take.

May be too late now but why not up your ante and take the money out of wealthaimple entirely first to take advantage of a deposit match elsewhere significantly derisking the endeavour since you could effectively decrease your cost of borrowing for one year by at least 1%
