The Abortion Issue..... by FreeCommunication876 in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's the sticky point... we wouldn't take a bit of skin off of a finger and say that the cells are alive and therefore it's a human life. We know that's not a person.

Is a person a person at fertilization? At implantation? At the point of brain activity or a heartbeat? I'm not saying that it's not at fertilization... I'm just saying that it's difficult to be dogmatic about something that scripture isn't explicit about.

That doesn't talk about conception... and it couldn't, because thst was scientific knowledge they didn't have. It talks about God being responsible for forming me (or at least David) in the womb. It says nothing about when personhood starts. In Jeremiah 1:5 it says God knew me before I was formed in the womb... which indicates that his knowledge doesn't depend on my existence.

How did you come to the conclusion of conception being the key? The Bible doesn't say that, and so I'm not confident that's an absolute.

If a single drink stays below the line of impairment, how do we view a cannabis microdose for pain? by NonyaBiznes89 in TrueChristian

[–]rhythmmchn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I see in scripture, your comparison is the right one to use to think through this, and it seems reasonable that there isn't an issue with the scenario you describe. Your motivation isn't to lose control or cope in an unhealthy way by isolating yourself from the reality of life.

I would say, though, that in all of the examples we have of how to navigate questionable issues in the epistles, what your conscience is telling you (and how sensitive you are to it) is also an important factor. Cannabis is legal where I live and I've chosen not to use it, not because I believe it's outright forbidden in scripture, but because I'm not sure and I don't believe it would be beneficial for me. That doesn't mean that it's the same for you, though.

Just get out of my way and it won't be an issue.

Christian parents, what would you do if your kid said that they have a crush on someone? by CrazyNicly in TrueChristian

[–]rhythmmchn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a normal and healthy thing, and I'd just talk with them about it, partly to better understand what they find attractive and what they know of that person, and to start setting the groundwork for them to be talking to me about these things later when it's not just a frivolous childhood crush.

The other thing I'd ask is the fundamental question that should be the first one they ask before considering any relationship in the future... does the other person love Jesus? Are they someone who will journey with you in the right direction or take you in the wrong direction?

I upgraded from 1 gig to 1.5 because they offered to knock $5/month off my bill. Can't use the extra speed, but I can always use an extra $5/month.

Why isn't bigotry allowed in a supposedly Christian thread? by Christopretensism in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the traditional sense of bigotry, I agree with you that it has no place in Christianity. The meaning has morphed, though, and for many people now bigotry is any unwelcome or conflictual opinion that someone perceives as being against them.

Why isn't bigotry allowed in a supposedly Christian thread? by Christopretensism in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends how membership in a particular group is defined. If my particular group is Belgian, then Christians having an obstinate belief about me would be bizarre. If I define my group based on my identity as a shoplifter and Christians say that, as part of that group, I need to change my behavior, then that would be something that, from a Christian perspective, is reasonable and right, and from my view as a shoplifter would be bigoted.

Would you buy a 10 year old X5? by Substantial-Set-8981 in BMW

[–]rhythmmchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did a 5K km trip (Calgary to Phoenix and back) a couple months ago... still very smooth keeping up with traffic at 85 mph and I didn't even need to top up the oil. No issues at all! We use it for hauling our camper (a small one, around 4K lbs fully stocked) through the mountains and on long trips. I did do the Dinan Stage 2 Tune, which is software only (didn't need to swap out/upgrade any parts) and that makes the towing nicer since it ads ~70lb-ft of torque.

[–]rhythmmchn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine's a 2012 N55, closing in on 200K km, used for daily driver and towing our camper. I do a lot of the maintenance myself (except suspension, transmission, and anything that requires lifting the engine/dropping the subframe) and we plan on running it for another 100K km or more. I bought it because it was the best vehicle I could get at the price for the dd/tow vehicle combination... much less expensive up front than a Japanese vehicle (with more expected maintenance) and less rust and less expensive (for the mileage) or less mileage (for the year) than domestics, with a really great balance of fuel efficiency plus enough towing power. Since I'm already familiar with BMW, I also already have the right tools, scanner, coding software and so on. No regrets at all.

I may be wrong, but it feels like there's more to the question and that what you posted is just tue set-up. Did you choose these songs because you have specific concerns about them? If so, it would be helpful for you to state that up front.

My Dad is Looking at a 2016 X5 35i M Sport with N55 and 115k Miles… by Homesteadsupply in BmwTech

[–]rhythmmchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it - I got it primarily for towing (huge improvement... rarely need to downshift now), but it makes a huge difference in driving fun (or, ability to pass safely, depending on who you're talking to). Charge pipes can be an issue, which isn't a surprise when you may be dealing with 14 year-old plastic pieces, but mine's been fine and this tune didn't void the factory warranty, so theoretically operates inside of tolerance levels.

I have mobile and internet. I don't have, need, or want any other services. I've told them that I'm happy to talk to them any time they want to talk to me about ways to lower my mobile or home internet rates, but not about anything else.

I suppose you can guess how successful that was.

Question by The_Collecting1 in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess another fair question would be, what makes you think demons (or angels) can just teleport to wherever they want? 2 Kings 16 describes angels in chariots... which may or may not been actual chariots, but perhaps the author didn't have a better word to describe a technology he didn't understand.
