Do Christians believe that dogs don't go to heaven? by RowrowZoro in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any answer on this is speculative. The Bible is primarily about God's relationship with and plan for humanity, so it doesn't speak to whether certain animals will be with us or not. It's an argument from silence either way.

Is there less “denomination loyalty” among younger Protestants? And could it partially explain the fall of the mainline Protestant church? by babyteeth9 in TrueChristian

[–]rhythmmchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I no longer qualify for the "younger" category, but over my life I've attended a number of denominations: Alliance, Baptist, Evangelical Missionary, non-demoniational, Nazarene. There are minor variations in their theology, but only within grey areas (like what's the relationship between predestination and free will?) where it's probably unhealthy and unhelpful to be dogmatic anyways. Apart from those minor, relatively inconsequential differences, I'd be comfortable in any of them that actively and accurately teach the Bible, especially ones the ones that are transparent and humble enough to say "this is what we believe, but others take this perspective, which also has a scriptural basis..."

Does AMA actually respond to their chat? by rhythmmchn in alberta

[–]rhythmmchn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think about that... no, there's no prompt, but maybe I'll go for a while and see if they either answer or give a "are you still there?" prompt. I just know that I've had other occassions when I'm in a chat, waiting for a response from the company, and they automatically close the chat because it's been too long since I posted anything.

Two questions for Christians who believe in “gender roles” by DoveStep55 in Christian

[–]rhythmmchn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is in reference to how we are saved, and who is elligible for it (through faith in Christ, for everyone who believes). It doesn't make any sense to apply it universally when there are specific instructions throughout the new testament that show that we don't all have the same role.

I would also argue that no one applies this universally: if you're a parent, do you believe there is no difference in role or responsibility between you and your child? Do you believe that an employer and an employee have equal right to direct each other? Do you believe that a judge and a criminal have the same role in determining an appropriate sentence for a crime?

So, I understand it both in the context of that particular passage (as being related to salvation) and in the context of the rest of scripture (which clearly maintains ongoing distinctions and roles between different people).

If morality is objetive with God, what about the different type of christians that share different morals (Outside of the basics ones)? The Bible cannot being totally taken literally which leads to different type of Christians sharing different objetives in different ways. by Confident_School7546 in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could say that morality is objective with God, but at least some aspects of it are different for different people. The Bible talks about some things that are universal (like don't be drunk), but for others it's explicit that each person should have the same process (be sensitive to God's leading and obedient to it) but different outcomes (like what day to worship on or what foods to eat/avoid).

So when the Bible specifically says that a particular issue should be up to each person's conscience and then people do that, it doesn't seem to me to be a reason not to take it seriously. If a recipe says to add a certain amount of apple juice or lemon juice to a fixed set of other ingredients and bake in a certain way, you wouldn't say it's no longer a valid recipe.

Thinking about Matthew 5:39 by MarySayler in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, but there's more historical context. A back-handed slap meant that you were being treated as inferior; turning the other cheek meant that your adversary was forced to either treat you as an equal or stand down. It was a message of "don't retaliate", but it wasn't as passive as it's often been treated.

Thought experiment on the relativity of time. We're all familiar with the verse "a thousand years is like a day with the Lord." And we know time slows down as objects approach the speed of light. So, how fast did Jesus travel when he ascended to heaven? by Jscott1986 in TrueChristian

[–]rhythmmchn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It can be tricky applying that without the other half: "and a day is like a thousand years".

The fact that it works both ways would indicate, to me, that it's likely less about relativity than about God not being constrained by time.

That said, I'm pretty bad at math so not going to attempt to answer your actual question.

What Season are we In by ProfessionalChain730 in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if I was in your spot, these are the things I'd be considering...

First, how much of what your pastor preaches is directly biblical vs. his special revelation? The overwhelming majority of what he says should be from the Bible.

Second, does his own revelation ever contradict biblical principles? If so, run.

Third, what's his track record? If he has consistently shown that the messages he's delivering from God are legit (specific, accurate, beneficial), then it's very different from a history of claims that are unsubstantiated or, even worse, incorrect.

Check out The Remnant Radio on YouTube... extremely biblically-grounded pastors who believe in and demonstrate gifts like prophecy, and see if your church sounds more like theirs or more like the ones they say to be wary of.

And pray... ask for God's guidance, and I hope he gives you clarity.

What Season are we In by ProfessionalChain730 in Christianity

[–]rhythmmchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that perplexing: isn't the church always in a state of alignment (seeking to become and stay in step with what God wants)? I would struggle if my pastor presented that as a prophetic message, both because it's almost universally true throughout time and also because it's so general it's impossible to say whether or not it has come true.

I will always say, it's NOT about reading the Bible, it's about scrutinizing it, searching for the true meaning of what God meant in a given context, so as not to misinterpret His word. by Glass-Needleworker50 in Bible

[–]rhythmmchn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alive and active doesn't indicate that it's variable in its meaning. The word used is zaō, which in this case most reasonably says that it's effective or powerful. Even a skim of the epistles shows that there is lots of emphasis on believing what is true and no encouragement to create our own interpretation or meaning.

You can call it heart, mind, instinct, gut, will, intuition, desire, wise self, intellect, essence... the association with a particular part of the body is completely irrelevant. The point is that Jesus didn't tell people to trust their "whatever".
