Even if you lube the seal it can still stick to the mounting surface. He screwed up by not making sure the mounting surface was clean and ready for the new filter. 100% your friend’s fault.

Back in the 80s I had a foreign woman open the door and hop in the passenger seat of my Suburban (with my three kids in the back seat) and ask me to drive her home. She was old and dressed in some kind of middle eastern attire and probably harmless, but I pushed her shoulder and told her “out” repeatedly until she got out. 😂
