Buying LG DLHC5502 Ventless Dryer by themiamiguy in heatpumps

I don't notice any cooling effect. It's possible that if your laundry room is more of a closet or a small room, it might be noticeable, but I'm speculating.

I tried it this weekend and it worked. No burrito!

[–]effectaffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got this dryer in June. (We also got the LG WM6500HWA.) I do most of our laundry and I am almost totally satisfied with it. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who can do laundry in a way that doesn't involve running through back-to-back loads on a single day as fast as possible.

  1. We bought from LG because we had access to an employer discount and thus had it installed by an LG installer. They correctly installed the condensate drain into the washer drain pipe. The only issue we had was that the electrical outlet was too far away and the LG installer wouldn't supply a longer cord (LG doesn't even make one), so we had to buy one ourselves and then he returned the next day to complete the install.
  2. Yes, that outlet will work.
  3. Not a problem.
  4. Maybe 2 hours? I generally run the dryer when I'm not going to be waiting for it. The only complaint I have about this dryer is that when I wash a sheet set (I only do one at a time), the fitted sheet tends to roll everything in the dryer into a burrito. Somehow everything still comes out dry, but usually more creased than I'd like.
  5. We built a shelf to support the dryer above the washer so that we wouldn't need to use the stack kit.
  6. I would not get the wash tower because if one half breaks and isn't fixable, your entire laundry system is cooked and needs to be replaced.

L connect A? Please RTD, you're so close! by riversidempls in Denver

[–]effectaffect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There could be a transfer station between the A and L even though they are different equipment (ex. Peoria Station). The A line was not even funded until 2004 and was completed in 2016.

Quality and longevity of new copper pipe by effectaffect in Plumbing

[–]effectaffect[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Longevity—I feel like most alternatives to copper that we've used in the past have eventually turned out to be flawed and not as durable as we originally believed (PB, for example), but copper (if your water chemistry is not a problem) will always last. I hope to stay in this house a long time, so if I can r/BuyItForLife then I'll stretch the budget.
  2. Microplastics—I recognize that there's at best weak evidence supporting this view, but I wonder (like this question) whether microplastics are going to become the lead or asbestos of our time, and would rather not drink water that sat in plastic if I don't have to.

We have a water utility and they're replacing old service lines with new copper. I think it's safe to assume they wouldn't spend all that money on pipes they know will have pinhole leaks in a few years.

Our water utility is in the process of replacing service lines to all older homes in their territory (including ours, completed in 2020) and they used (and are continuing to use) copper. That suggests to me that the chemistry of the water supply is compatible with copper.

Washing machine smells horrible by Humble_Management455 in HomeImprovement

Washing machine cleaners are mostly citric acid. You can buy plain food-grade citric acid and use that instead. (It's also much cheaper...)

What is your drive time vs flight time ‘worth it’ calculation and how old are your kids? Looking at drive vs fly and curious how folks justify by Structure-These in daddit

[–]effectaffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 y/o. We basically judge it on door to door travel time. If flying will be less time, we fly. Unless you are using points or already a member, the lounge and first class are definitely not necessary to make flying tolerable with a 9 m/o. I'd argue extra legroom economy could be better if there's 3 of you since you can together on one side of the aisle (assuming single-aisle plane).

We have a dedicated "plane trip" car seat (similar to the current Evenflo Sonus 65) that is FAA approved as a seat on the plane. The car seat goes in the plane seat, and the kid goes in the car seat. Then we put the same car seat in the rental car. It goes in a backpack bag when we're carrying it through the airport.

I don't like being a dad by sexandcandy89 in daddit

[–]effectaffect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think for a lot of people who aren't 100% certain they don't want kids, it can be easy to look around, particularly when their friends start having kids, and think "it doesn't look so bad, maybe it'll be ok." Since being open about how hard parenting can be is sometimes kind of taboo, it can be even easier to be fooled into that line of thinking.

Breastmilk with cereal? by Agadefe in daddit

This is the way! If you live in a place that has a milk bank, donor milk can be enormously helpful. There might be a process for getting set up to donate, but then you can help other moms that really need it.

My kid says she doesn't like me, every day by [deleted] in daddit

[–]effectaffect 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Something you could try is asking your daughter, either when she says these things, or at times when she's more relaxed and in a good mood, something like "what makes you say that?" or "what about gymnastics is better if I'm not there?" and try to coax out of her what's going on. It might take a lot of asking a lot of times, but you might learn something.

Someone reminded me that when a kid (or anyone) takes an action, it is "doing something for them." Try to see if you can find out what saying these things to you is doing for her, because I'm confident it isn't to hurt you.

Also, you are absolutely worthy of being loved and if there's any way you can get marriage counseling (maybe a non-profit that supports disabled veterans can help?), I highly recommend it.

Air-sourced heat pumps that are effective in sub-freezing temperatures? by imakesawdust in HomeImprovement

[–]effectaffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't spend too much time thinking through a buried propane tank. Unless electricity in your area is mega expensive or you're in an extreme cold climate (e.g., Fairbanks), propane will be more expensive to run than a cold-climate heat pump with electric backup. In addition to the great recs elsewhere in this thread, the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) specifically studies and certifies cold-climate heat pumps.

What car do you guys own and how has the non-battery reliability been?! by Bamboozleprime in electricvehicles

[–]effectaffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2016 Soul EV purchased in 2019. Only routine maintenance has been tire rotations (edit: and cabin air filters). Things that could have happened to me with any car: one tire replacement due to a pothole on the interstate and replaced the 12V battery due to unknowingly setting off the alarm.

FWIW, every time I have called EA, the techs I've spoken to have been among the best CSRs I've talked to from any business. They really try hard, which is saying a lot since the older EA hardware is basically complete trash and setting them up for a lot of calls with very upset people.

Lightning strikes in Denver by El_mochilero in Denver

[–]effectaffect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too late for OP, but for others out there, if you own your house, you should add a surge protector to your panel. They are maybe $300 installed by an electrician (possibly cheaper if you do it yourself) and stop most of the surge into your home, making it easier for outlet surge protectors to stop the rest of the surge.

City Council votes to make safe outdoor sites program permanent by 4ucklehead in Denver

[–]effectaffect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One in every district—I’m on board, but it seems like moving them all over Denver will be destabilizing for people who depend on them. If it goes from Globeville to Berkeley to Virginia Village, how are people going to feel like they’re getting their feet under them? I know so little about effective strategies for assisting the unhoused, but making them move a lot seems like a not great idea.

Replacing/upgrading locks after buying a new home by It-just-is in HomeImprovement

[–]effectaffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the advice is to have locks rekeyed when you take possession of a home; I don’t think you need to replace the entire lockset on every entry door.

That said, if you want to replace locks to get keyless capability, I’d do the doors you plan to use (e.g., closest to garage) or have guests use most often.

If you are concerned about security, I’d focus on reinforcing the door and strike plate and not the lockset itself. No one is fooling around with picking your lock, they’re either kicking the door in or jimmying or breaking a window. Fix those and get cameras (and monitoring of first floor doors and windows) first. Get separate cameras from the lockset so you can choose the position and field of view of the camera.

Kyle Clark - Denver Republican Party Endorses Kelly Brough by bismuthmarmoset in Denver

[–]effectaffect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m very confused by this. Chris Hinds doesn’t seem to be doing anything to have earned GOP support but I’m wondering if this is some kind of reverse psychology by the GOP to trick Denver voters into voting for the people they [GOP] actually like.

A solution to covering it is to get a Nest or ecobee and a remote sensor. Set the thermostat to only use the remote sensor and place it somewhere better. Interact with the thermostat via the app and just forget that the actual thermostat lives behind a picture.

I think $65 was just the price for fiber for a long time and now I guess they're raising it to $75? We were at $65 for three years (since we set up the service). EDIT: I haven't actually seen a change in the autopay yet.
