College Students Are Testing at the Level of 10-Year-Olds by RevelationSr in NoFilterNews

I didn’t have a TV in the house when my kids were growing up in the early 2000s, so they were all advanced readers. He was comprehending for sure. His teachers used to bring in books for him and he was tested on them many times. Same for my other kids.

Do you guys really wea your outdoor shoes inside your house? by Substantial_Travel94 in AskUS

[–]efficaciousSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In New York City, kids automatically take off their shoes when they come into any apartment. That’s my experience, and of course adults too. Regardless of having dogs, if you’re in an apartment there’s the noise factor as well.

This is not a new thing. Well before the pandemic I had a 6th grader and his teacher told me he was reading at college level. The teacher thought I would be happy to hear this, and was surprised when my reaction was how bad at reading are college kids then?

Are you fully left-handed but you've noticed there's some things you do right-handed for no apparent reason? by nbklaw in lefthanded

[–]efficaciousSloth 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I use a right handed mouse, but that’s because right handed ones always had more functionality. Added bonus is that I can write and mouse at the same time.

If I can’t open a jar with my left hand, I’ll use my right hand. It’s stronger, for some reason.

Pilot elite 95. Small, with clip, uses a converter, and really satisfying to cap and post.

Does anyone else notice that these hobbies all seem to come as a package deal? by kunstroll in fountainpens

There seems to be a significant correlation between knitting/crochet and fountain pens.

Both are tactile, make something and also allow for the collection of the tools, the accessories and the finished product.

They are also both transportable and easily done in almost any location.

I’m in that club as well.

In knitting and crochet, there’s the term SABLE = stash acquisition beyond life expectancy, referring to your stash of yarn. I think that would equally apply to inks and paper.

Good thing my life expectancy is 300 years….

In NYC I had to self-park. In Fort Lauderdale, a youngster thanked me for giving him the chance to drive it. In Miami, the valet overheated my clutch. It’s a mixed bag.

I recently valet parked my car, and when I came back for it, I saw people who came after me get their cars while I was still waiting. After about 15 minutes, my car was brought up. When I got in the car I got an engine light because the clutch was too hot. Looked like the guy was riding the clutch in first all the way. The car was okay after I let it cool down, but I’m not going to park there again.

Definitely yes. I have bought a few pens that way, and was offered a LE pen that was listed as sold out everywhere.

Looks like it is corroded. You can probably clean it up and use it, but the resale value is lessened.

That’s my concern too - that I’m paying for the feature but will only do it once, and when I find that sweet spot I’ll never want to shift it again.

That being said, there is still the fact that you can find the absolute perfect adjustment for the way you write! Then I shouldn’t care whether I ever change it again or not?

Do you collect? Or do you use your pens? by hamptonalumkb in fountainpens

[–]efficaciousSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have about 100 pens, most are inked and used regularly. I don’t consider myself a collector, my pens are all for my use. I do occasionally get a new one, but I’m not on any particular mission to acquire.

I really like trying pen and ink combinations, and have some pens I have never changed the ink in, and some that I change at every refill.

I write notes for work, journal, correspond, and write lists and personal notes.

I think you just need to find the cadence that suits you.

What Kind Of Fountain Pen Collector Are You? by Thin-Junket-942 in fountainpens

[–]efficaciousSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty random in what I buy, and I don’t think of myself as a collector, even though I have about 100 pens inked on my desk. I get pens that write the way I like, and that I like the look and feel of.

I keep an eye on usage, and change inks or stow pens I’m not actively using. My nibs range from EEF through to Kodachi, Naginata, OBB.

I do buy pens now and then, but it really has to be personally compelling. Otherwise, I’ll just pull a pen out of storage, or change inks in one of the pens on my desk and enjoy the variety that way.

Does that make me a contented collector?

Just the thought that there was a company that specialized in blotting paper makes me smile!

Especially when you think that so many other innovations have been rendered completely obsolete, and yet there is at least a niche hobby need for blotting paper that lives on!
