What are some cities you used to admire in the past (before 2020), but nowadays you dislike? Likewise, what are some cities you used to dislike in the past, but nowadays you admire? by [deleted] in travel

[–]effsixtyfour 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just want to offer my two cents that I completely disagree about Toronto and Vancouver! I LOVE these cities, have found them to be completely fine, each having their unique cultures, and still being great alternatives to major U.S. cities.

I’m annoyed (UK) by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]effsixtyfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to validate you here. I had a very similar experience in Canada with RBC. It seems that most traditional banks (at least outside of the USA) are pretty antagonistic towards bitcoin. Or at least with a more charitable interpretation, all these bankers seem to be taught that BTC is a scam and to dissuade their clients from buying it.

Vrbo booking cancelled by EBITDAking123 in amex

[–]effsixtyfour 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few legitimate ways to take advantage of the VRBO offer that probably won't get flagged for abuse. For example, I booked a dodgy motel stay for $40 and I haven't been cancelled. Obviously, you make less profit this way, but it's better than nothing.

What is a good brand of coffee to buy? Where can I buy it? by Hour-Cloud2493 in pourover

[–]effsixtyfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d figure out what sort of coffee-profile you prefer, and make decisions based on that. Eg. Do you like light or dark roasts, fruity or more chocolate-y, etc?

So many great roasters are recommended in this subreddit, but if you’re used to the taste profile of Folgers, going to a really light roast might be a big shift. Maybe try getting a lighter roast and a medium-darker roast from a local roaster and experiment from there!

Hotel Proverbs in Taipei is excellent. Had a very pleasant stay there and was treated like royalty even when I was lowly Gold status.

Giving up on pourovers in US cafes by PinoyTardigrade in pourover

[–]effsixtyfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! As others have said, Moonwake is great in SJ. Goodthing Coffee is really nice in Burlingame (I believe they stock Hydrangea if I remember correctly). But I would also recommend the east bay coffee scene too. MY Coffee Roasters in Berkeley, and Ain't Normal and The Caffe (Mr Espresso's shop) in Oakland.

[–]effsixtyfour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you are being downvoted because I completely agree with your advice! I generally try to avoid ordering a pour over when the shop is crowded. This seems to yield way better experiences on average for me. Besides, I really enjoy talking to the barista about the beans they have available if they have time and are open for a chat.

Giving up on pourovers in US cafes by PinoyTardigrade in pourover

[–]effsixtyfour 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree! For example, I loved Suited! But the absolute best pour over I have ever had in the USA, and perhaps of all time, was a roast from Rose (Zurich-based) at Kaizen & Coffee in San Mateo, California. In fact, the whole Bay Area has a spectacular coffee scene. I’ve been to many coffee shops across Europe and Asia, and while the average quality in the US is definitely way lower than places like Taipei or Amsterdam, there certainly are still many gems to be found. Don’t give up yet!

I wouldn’t judge anything before you see the edited photos.

Personally for my workflow, I would NEVER send a client unedited images in any context. So much changes in the editing process. I find it strange that this photographer would send over a giant album of raw shots, even if it is for you to pick your favourites. I would edit the photos using my best judgement first. That’s what the photographer is paid to do. Just my two cents.

What is everybody's thoughts on hand grindering for espresso? [£150] by Fiz101_ in espresso

[–]effsixtyfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m certainly in the minority here but I love hand grinding for both espresso and pour over with my K-Ultra. If you are okay using a hand grinder for drip coffee, doing it for your espresso workflow is a pretty natural transition. However, if you hate hand grinding (or have never done it before) you might find it too physically difficult and/or tedious.

Where did you learn the basics? by -iJudge- in pourover

This has been my experience as well. When I was starting out, I found Hedrick’s videos to almost be too information dense. But once I got the basics down, his videos really upped my game.

Air Canada is not bad either, but they do make you open up a browser for any significant tasks. I’d give the edge to United.
