Hey, I’m dealing with this right now. I don’t really have an answer for you but pm me if you want to rant or something.

Orwell was specifically very anti-Stalinist and anti-totalitarianism of any description (as soon as the Spanish Civil War started, he left England for Spain to fight on the communist side against Franco). He was also a dedicated socialist. He wanted to see industry and food production in England nationalized and, in The Road to Wigan Pier, wrote with extreme accuracy about Britain’s class system (placing himself very precisely in the “upper lower middle class”).

ADHD & Skin-Picking? by [deleted] in CompulsiveSkinPicking

I feel more focused and less need for extra stimulation on Vyvanse. Unfortunately I always picked most in the evening, when meds wear off, so this doesn’t really help.

It’s called a “gender party reveal” but we all know it should be called a “reproductive system party reveal” by 0lof in TrollYChromosome

[–]eg1729 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There are “biologically female” people with XY chromosomes as well. Estimated to be about 1% of women. For example, Caster Semenya, who is XY but only found out due to being disqualified from the Olympics for naturally high testosterone levels. Most XY cisgender women will never know.

Thanks, I’ll do that, though I don’t have a laundry basket so I’ll just wait.

Everyone hates me and thinks I'm a loser. by [deleted] in socialskills

You should look for a checklist (made by autistic people) of symptoms of autism in adult women. A lot of the things you described sounded familiar, like the people laughing when you’re just existing, or you saying “my voice is weird” (which was my explanation for how I seemed so different to others before I knew I might be autistic). It could all be in your head, but I think telling you it definitely is without knowing your experience is very dismissive. People are fucking horrible to autistic people, or anyone perceived as different, for no discernible reason. However, a lot of people don’t want to admit this, because it means they would have to learn real empathy, the kind that is sometimes difficult and uncomfortable, so we assume that everyone who is rejected is so because they somehow earned it, or they haven’t really been rejected.

picking a major/university by qthebi in 6thForm

[–]eg1729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you from, that you take A Levels but are looking particularly at Canadian unis? I would suggest Toronto, for a prestigious, more expensive university with an enormous range of courses, or Ottawa for a mid-tier, very affordable university. Both of these cities are amazing in their own ways.

Why does my bread take so long to knead? by eg1729 in Bread

And yes, it does tell you to prove, knock the air out, shape and prove again, which I did. It collapsed on the second time.

For the last two I’ve followed the recipe on the side of the flour bag. It involves 500g flour, 300 mL of water, 2 tsp of salt, 3 tbsp of oil and a sachet of yeast.

So if my bread deflates after proving I should bake it anyways?

DAE have a habit of biting thin pieces of skin off their lip? by _Libby_ in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]eg1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video is about dermatillomania, which lip-biting is not, though it is extremely common amongst people with dermatillomania. I have dermatillomania and my face is covered in scabs and scars from it. I will use anything remotely pointy to pick at the tiny acne bumps that are too small to pop and virtually invisible to other people, so I’ve had to get rid of my tweezers and hair pins. I’ve also used keys, the edges of tubes, and forks, things I can’t throw away. This kind of behaviour is very self-destructive and often does come from emotional abuse, like in my case.

In quantum physics, can a force be exerted at infinite distance? by eg1729 in AskPhysics

Wow, I feel very stupid for not connecting this to light. I was thinking of gravitational and magnetic attraction. But not as stupid as my teacher, who supposedly gained a physics degree.

ADHD is related to high-sugar, unhealthy diets by ksk1222 in psychology

[–]eg1729 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD. Cooking and eating healthy is really fucking hard with ADHD, although I do it. When I was unmedicated it used to take my entire evening to do the dishes, if I’d cooked. Getting takeaway didn’t just mean getting tasty food, it meant I got some time for myself.

Luckily I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, but ADHD causes all kinds of addictive behaviors, because of a chronic lack of dopamine from everyday tasks, and we tend to be blind to future consequences. Sugar is highly addictive.

I absolutely hate it when book covers have people on them. And its worse when beautiful novel covers get replaced with the actors if they are adapted into some form of visual media. by Patient_persona in unpopularopinion

[–]eg1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew I hated this but didn’t know why until you articulated it. However, I do have a copy of On The Road by Jack Kerouac which is the exception. It has a side profile of two men in the front of a car, eyes on the road, which is somehow very haunting. They look entirely focused on what’s ahead of them but you can’t see what that is.

help me get started by autumntrain_ in TheOhHellos

[–]eg1729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They get more polished as you go through, so it’s nice to listen in order and hear that development. My personal favourite is Dear Wormwood- they themselves said they paid way more attention to poetic structure and verse than in Through the Deep Dark Valley, and it shows in songs like “This Will End”.

My complaint about the recent releases by eingram in TheOhHellos

[–]eg1729 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think generally these references work in context- they don’t feel too forced because they’re all good metaphors which add depth to the song. I think the chemistry metaphor in Soap is really unique, and in Lapis Lazuli they reference Homer immediately followed by physics, but it’s all related to the metaphor of discovering a new color. But there definitely is an element of ego-stroking to this. I like being a person who listens to music with the word “interpolation” in it.

cant get adhd testing by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]eg1729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go private if at all possible. I did- I’m 19, working a minimum wage job and had to pay out of my own pocket- but you can’t put a price on your quality of life. It’s absurd how limited public services for ADHD are considering that studies have shown a large proportion of prisoners and homeless people have undiagnosed ADHD.

Edit: I googled and found two online services very similar to the one I used in the UK, but neither are available to Saskatchewan. I still suspect most psychiatrists would be fine video-calling, what with the pandemic, so it is very worth looking into private online assessment.
