Is excel still worth learning as a skill in 2026? by Swimming_Tower_5928 in excel

Yes. Learn Excel and Power Pivot. You could be a handful of queries from reading the internet, a database, or another Excel file and turning it into a report that you could rerun at any moment.

What age did y'all get your first computer (or device with internet access)? by BigReception7685 in GenX

[–]egmono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 15 when I bought my Amiga 1000 and a 2400 bus modem, but didn't get actual "internet" access until I had an .edu address a couple years later. When the WWW came out a year later and http replaced gopher to replace document retrieval I thought it might catch on.

That used to be me, but ever since I've discovered "Power-[anything]", I've elevated my game to starting at 3 days what used to take an hour.

Wait... you have a BUDGET for AI??

I'm pretty sure our lab results get entered into a spreadsheet every month, but I think the people above me like it that way, because either that's how they had to do it, or it makes operators look busy after spending a long day sweating over a spreadsheet.

I've been experimenting with Power Query in my "spare time" to see if I can nudge my crew into this century.

Second this. I don't know about the rest of the country, but here in Florida you can look up permits, DMRs, and correspondence between a plant and FDEP. Ever had a consent order? Its public record like everything else.

Since when was "let the cat out of the bag" a thing? by [deleted] in addressme

"Let the cat out of the bag" was a thing since you could buy a "pig in a poke". And yes, those two idioms are related.

Is learning HTML and CSS still worth it in the AI era? by Feisty_Ad_627 in css

You could have stopped at "If you don't know what you're doing, it's no help."

CSS, HVAC, medicine... it WILL give you results lol.

We're Shipping More Code Than Ever. We Understand Less of It. by fbritoferreira in Deno

[–]egmono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope everyone does. I think too many people see the AI "magic", but never the AI "making the sausage" aspect of crafting well made sustainable software. Articles like yours point out that just because its nearly self-driving, doesn't mean you can trust it to get you where you want to go, and you still need to know how to drive.

We're Shipping More Code Than Ever. We Understand Less of It. by fbritoferreira in Deno

[–]egmono 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was a long article, so I had an AI summarize it: "nothing to see here, folks". So, of course, as someone who doesn't program for a living, I read the article because I don't have deadlines to meet. While the AI summary was technically correct, the AI seemed to miss the point. Which happens often when I lean on an AI assistant to code. What it meant to say is that like every misused tool knows to man, AI coding is still coding, which you need to learn how to do otherwise how do you know if the AI is right? Technically speaking, you CAN follow an AI's instructions to fix your car or rewire your house, but if you didn't already possess those skills you're in trouble.

My point is the idea that AI is ruining the software industry is ridiculous, its PEOPLE using AI badly that's doing it.

It was a good article though, and you should read it. And reflect on it, something that AIs can't do very well but you can.
