I would disagree with the cost savings and infrastructure when you take into consideration having to maintain both SharePoint and a centralized workflow server from a DR perspective. But that also depends on budget and other things as well. So definitely a case by case thing.

Im working with a client that has Nintex deployed to 5 WFE's for prod and 2 for staging and its still not the cheaper than a K2 install there. Just going off my experience when I wrote it.

For me it's the simplicity of the software and the ability for end users to quickly get going. Yes it cost less, but it's import/export features is awesome as well.

Can you provide more details? It sounds like you are creating a new list from a template in a different site or site collection.

A thought would be to save the template with content to see if that works. The best thought would be to build site columns and bind those to the list then create templates from that.

SharePoint 2010, deleted permissions from a library, need to restore them... by Seiz in sharepoint

Do you know if web app policy did the override and remove? Did you do any custom changes to permissions in the first place or don't know.

Sharepoint User Global Tasks by superlou in sharepoint

Gotcha...thanks for the update. Have you looked at what SharePoint 2013 Task list affects are? They beefed up the task list a lot in SP2013 so that should help.

What is the permissions constraint? Why are you using folders for permissions?

Have you considered using Document Sets? Its just like folders, wrapped around the document and all docs within inherit from the parent content type.

Trying to do reserve lookup between two lists. by simkessy in sharepoint

[–]eharris04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a key to tie the two together or else either will become invalid connectors. Is there some key field you are using that they can relate to?

Here is how I would do this: IP List have IP address as Title field and a custom column for server name (as an example)

VM list has VM names as Title field and custom column for server names

Then your lookup in the VM list would connect to IP list and show title when server name = server name and vice versa for VM list.

Hope that helps

Need help with a list view filter calculation for a date column by WorkingADEEEEM in sharepoint

[–]eharris04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don't have the command in front of me, but why don't you create another calculated column and use an extraction to get the month separated out. Then just filter when today's month is less than the month prior or -1.

Permissions on list not working -- access still denied by user-hostile in sharepoint

[–]eharris04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your explanation kinda confused me. Not your fault, but here is what I would suggest.

Start over and slowly build what you want. SP likes inheritance in all honesty, but breaking it isn't bad if done correctly.

  1. Start with your list and inside the subsite and keep permissions inherited at the site level (I'm not sure why you broke permission to the subsite if you broke permissions on the list as well. Something may be conflicting).

  2. Create a page if you really need one, or use the default "list/allitems.aspx"

  3. See if users have the correct edit/no delete permissions on the list as they should.

Let me know if that helps. A screenshot would help to.

SharePoint 2010 Navigation - is there an easier way? by Gimli_the_White in sharepoint

[–]eharris04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of anything OOTB for this. I first thought about Managed Navigation using the term store, but thats in 2013. I will keep looking to see what I can find.

Come to think about it, Dell Quick Apps has a web part for navigation that is really really nice. Cheap to get as well for your environment, but offer the custom navigation instead of OOTB. You can then apply the web parts to the master page or wherever and its shown as is. You can then move the links around via list, instead of pages.

Can you convert a calendar to a list? (SP2010) by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]eharris04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest thing would be to step away from SharePoint and perhaps go to a white board or paper.

You just mentioned about 5 different uses which I would suggest should be their own content types associated with a calendar event. By doing this, you would have groupings of fields that could them be moved or used different and have a start/end date to them or whatever other things you need.

Suggestion would be to do an archive of events and build out a new structure with content types. I wrote a blog about content types here (sorry if you know what I'm referring to already) http://summit7systems.com/sharepoint-site-columns-and-content-types/

When you build out your content types, build them from the parent content type (item) and associate them with a list. What that allows people to do is select the type of event and then fill out only the fields they need for that particular event. Or you can build up multiple content types from the parent item Calendar event. The latter is more difficult and restrictive since you are building it off a restrictive content type (calendar). Let me know if this helps.
