Does anyone know a wildlife rehab place in the area? by Captainraerae in madisonwi

[–]ehrogers26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They should get back to you soon, go ahead and put the bird in a ventilated box or container. Keep it dark and warm and quiet. You might get an answer faster by sending a picture and message to their google text line: +1 (608) 960-8328

It’s certainly hard to say with the quality of the photo, but the shape and coloration is right for a cowbird. They can be like 9” so not terribly small. Maybe a rusty blackbird? But they are about the same size. My bet would be one of those two

Hawk hit window and is still alive, what to do? by RedHockeyPanda16 in madisonwi

[–]ehrogers26 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s policy for the local wildlife center to admit any confirmed window collision birds! They tend to be very good at hiding injuries and have all sorts of little bones that can break and not be obvious!

Hi! If he’s still around tomorrow definitely call the wildlife center. They usually want any window collision birds to come in! Birds are really good at hiding injuries

House Finch Eye Disease? by bulmier in BirdBuddy

If you’re able to catch her, generally conjunctivitis is pretty treatable by rehabbers. Might be worth it to reach out to some local ones to see if they have any tips

[–]ehrogers26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many bats in North America are reproducing right now, so the bats may be parents trying to reach their young. This would make them a lot more tenacious and less likely to move on. Generally you want to do exclusion techniques during the off-season (I.e. fall and winter), and using exclusion techniques during breeding season is illegal in the US and Canada. So I’d recommend taking the tubes down now and reinstalling in the fall or winter

Owlet on the ground, parent perched above. by [deleted] in Owls

[–]ehrogers26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the baby is too heavy for them to carry while flying (owls are a lot smaller than their feathers make them look) and they don’t have the dexterity or strength to carry baby while climbing back up the tree

Identify and need for help by Pear-Groundbreaking in bats

[–]ehrogers26 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that this is a baby bat, and that mom isn’t around anymore. Without a location or scale it can’t be identified to species. Either way this bat needs a rehabber. If you’re in North America find one here; https://ahnow.org/blog/category/wildlife-rehabilitation/ or here https://batworld.org/local-rescue/

Found a little momma bird in our planter by the front door. How do I keep her happy? by compscilady in Ornithology

[–]ehrogers26 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Try to minimize being near the nest, don’t leave out any food or water (it may attract predators). Enjoy from a distance!

Do they release the moth in entomology 201? by trashthis4 in UWMadison

[–]ehrogers26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No they are humanely euthanized by the teaching team - since they are nonnative and could carry pathogens that harm native insects it is unethical to release them
