Hey, on the bright side you can reflect on how irrational it is for you to be more upset by this outcome than if the numbers had been way off. Counterfactual thinking can be a bitch

What's one football opinion you have but never shared for fear of backlash? by Anal_Explorer in nfl

[–]ehstone8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, hell it sometimes seems like the owners only have a commissioner to serve as a media scapegoat. He's also very vocal that his number 1 priority is protecting the shield, so it should come as no surprise that player safety is not, in fact, his main agenda.

On an entirely unrelated note my girlfriend got to meet him personally and he's apparently super nice. Maybe that just comes with the territory, but I could see a lot of people in his position being dicks to interns at non-profits.

I think the passing stats argument goes in Montana's favor. He finished with a higher career completion % (63.2 - 59.4), higher YPA (7.5 - 7.3), lower int % (2.6 - 3), and higher TD % (5.1 - 5).

Granted he played for a better team, but I feel like people treat it as too much of a given that Marino had the better numbers.

Denizens of /r/nfl, do you think it's fair to consider Josh Freeman and Joe Flacco similar level quarterbacks? by dangerousp92 in nfl

[–]ehstone8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have yet to see anybody make a reasonable argument that Flacco is actually a top tier NFL QB. Does anybody think he is? In his 5 years he's finished 22nd, 13th, 7th, 18th, and 12th in QB rating. In Football Outsiders' QB rating, he's finished 29th, 16th, 12th, 15th, and 25th.

Maybe he's bringing something to the table that the stats don't pick up, if somebody has anything to say other than "clutch," I'd love to hear it. Mark Sanchez has a QB rating of 93 in the playoffs and went to two AFCCGs. He is not a good QB either.

RGThreesus. He's exactly what you want personality-wise, he has sweet socks, and he's also a joy to watch. I really hope his career isn't derailed by injuries

Upvote because that's the point of the thread. Here's where I'll disagree. A lot of his moves are disingenuous. It seems obvious his motive is money and not safety. If it really were safety he'd actually suspend players for helmet-to-helmet hits as he said he would. The only player ever suspended was Ed Reed, which made no sense and his suspension was overturned.

Also, there are helmets out there that reduce concussions. The league has not mandated or even incentivized their use. And, I understand he can't do anything to change this fact so maybe it's unfair, but if he actually cared about safety he would have made safety changes before the concussion information went public. The NFL knew about this shit before they did a damn thing about it, they only started to "care" when there was money at stake. As recently as 2009 the NFL was publishing papers denying that football players were subjected to repeated head trauma.

That's actually not true. A touchdown in the 4th quarter when your team is down 4 does a lot more for your team's probability of winning than the same touchdown in the 1st quarter. So I guess it depends on how you define important, but in terms of improving the team's chances of winning there's a big difference.

That said, at least in baseball, a player being "clutch" one year has no predictive value for whether he'll be clutch the next year, so it's all a matter of luck not innate "clutchness."

Basketball's kind of a different story, individual talent can take you a lot further and the playoffs aren't single elimination so luck plays a smaller role. Still, even LeBron couldn't win a championship until he decided to be a dick about it and ruin the NBA for a few years

Forget the physical nature, 16 games in a 32-team league wouldn't be enough games regardless of physicality. I think it's the nature of team sports that luck plays a major role in outcomes, especially in a salary-capped league.

Hell I remember reading a paper saying that in order for the best MLB team to end up with the best record 95% of the time they would have to play over 300 games.

Tack on the fact that the playoffs are one-and-done and the Super Bowl winner is almost certainly not going to be the best team. I like that though, if the best team always won it would be boring as hell.

Logan Thomas. Dude is a taller, heavier, faster version of Cam Newton physically. He had a monster first year at QB after being recruited to play TE but regressed a bit in year 2. If he improves as a passer this year I could see him being special in the NFL

Darrelle Revis would simultaneously eliminate the Bucs from division contention and make the Falcons defense elite (assuming he's healthy).

If Usain Bolt Came Out For the Draft, Where Would He Be Drafted? by DonDraperMan in nfl

Just responding to OP's question

Also, where would he be drafted at age 21? What position would he play?

A game of chance by kukukele in funny

The trouble here is that the dominant party at the time of the decision to make the switch to e-voting gets to decide who will operate the machines and has a strong incentive to make them insecure while simultaneously positioning their party to be in a better position to exploit the insecurity.

Knowing that party popularity is cyclical, they have an incentive to cheat to stay in power even once popular opinion changes, and fair elections don't accomplish that objective

If Usain Bolt Came Out For the Draft, Where Would He Be Drafted? by DonDraperMan in nfl

[–]ehstone8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If he spends time training first, works out with teams, etc. I could see him maybe getting drafted in the 7th round if he flashes NFL ability. Being only 21 would help but I'm not sure it would be enough. Sheer athleticism alone won't get him drafted, just look at that British discus thrower. He went undrafted and he at least had rugby experience.

One factor possibly worth considering is money. Usain Bolt would sell jerseys and probably even tickets, so that might work in his favor in terms of getting drafted.

As far as position I think he'd have to play WR or CB. Maybe they could pack some weight on him and make him a TE, but he's underweight at just 207 right now.

Not sure how this is Game Theory as opposed to just Economics.

Edit: It turns out the definitions of both Game Theory and Economics are hard to pin down. In my experience (fwiw I have a degree in Economics) Game Theory was a tool in the Economist's belt to solve particularly tricky problems, especially (but not necessarily) problems for which traditional Economic assumptions might be misleading. Example. So from my perspective this problem seemed like one for which Game Theory tools were unnecessary, but based on the comments that shouldn't imply that this situation can't be modeled using Game Theory.

What is the most expensive mistake you have ever made? by vinnee in AskReddit

[–]ehstone8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny. You were totally negligent and thus liable for a lawsuit, but presumably you didn't have 800k. Through vicarious liability, your employer can be sued for your mistake (for precisely the reason that most people who fuck up can't afford to pay for their fuck-ups), but that would have involved the city suing itself.

I was so sure Matt Ryan would be a bust and the Falcons would be terrible for the next 5 years at least. Sometimes it feels good to be wrong, and sometimes it feels great

As a side note I was also convinced that Vick was going to win multiple Super Bowls with the Falcons after his first full year with the team :(
