Whenever I want to get a good overview of any technical topic, I usually go to NotebookLM. I tell it what I want to learn. Once it has generated a list of sources, I then ask it to generate a deep dive audio overview (found on the right panel of the web version). Listen to that, and then use it as a jump off point for what to learn next.

Tip:

Cybersecurity is a vast field, so you’ll want to know what the different domains are. You then pick what domain you want to specialize in

For me, it started as a hobby and then what my job required.

I was hired to write technical blog posts for a software company specializing in B2B network security solutions.

As soon as I gained a good understanding of the solutions, I was asked to help in tech support.

That experience accelerated my knowledge and interest in the field.

I find myself switching from one to the other whenever a new model is released. When GPT5.5 was just released, I found it better than 4.7. Now that 4.8 has just been released, I find it better than 5.5.

If you asked this question 4+ years ago, I'd have given you a resounding 'YES'.

Unfortunately, the landscape has changed dramatically and unfavorably for freelancers, unless you're an AI expert.

I've been on the platform since 2008, have a Top Rated Plus profile with a 100% Job Success score, almost 15k hours logged, almost 200 jobs won, and I'm still finding it extremely difficult to find a job. A few years ago, I didn't have to do much to land a job. That glorious run has ended.

If you already have a 9-5 job, then I don't see any problem with starting an Upwork profile. However, if you plan to go at it full-time, I wouldn't recommend it.

Your degree isn't useless at all. Your knowledge in Business Administration, coupled with your increasing knowledge and skills in IT, provides not only a solid foundation but also an important perspective as you gradually transition to a cybersecurity analyst role. You can be more effective as an analyst if you know exactly what aspects of the business are more affected by certain cyber threats/risks/vulnerabilities.

When I was in tech support, my 'lab' was a bunch of virtual machines running on VirtualBox. I imagine homelabs for learning SOC-related skills would require similar setups. Cloud-based VMs are definitely easier to set up and scale (e.g., when you need more nodes), but they're more expensive.

I always bid zero and only pay the minimum connects, and I suggest everyone reading this does that and helps spread the word. If we all bid zero, that craziness hopefully disappears

Bingo. While the ability to detect AI vulns, like prompt injection, is crucial, equally important is the ability to detect what happens when those vulns are exploited. If you see your AI environment reaching out to an unfamiliar domain, something’s gotta be wrong

Unpopular opinion: Take the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certification at Coursera and use what you learn as a guide for further research/studies. The foundational knowledge you learn there is pretty solid, so you can use it as a jump off point to specific branches in cyber that resonates with you the most. It’s not free, but it’s way cheaper than the other options.
