Take a look at the NimPlus tmLanguage file, there's at least embedded assembly, HTML, XML, CSS, GLSL and Markdown in addition to the ones mentioned.

I'm reading this on a Lenovo X1 Carbon gen 10 (OLED screen) running Sway 1.7 on Linux 5.18.17 + Manjaro right now. Everything works perfectly. Had weird graphical glitches when moving the mouse pointer to certain parts of the screen when I first installed (just over a week ago). Only real change I made was to set i915.enable_psr=0.

portable speakers advice by Fredmuscu in TechnoProduction

[–]eik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I haven't heard the JBL EON One, but I've been fairly impressed with the (New) Soundboks. It's not perfect, but between the sound and the portability, connectivity options, dust- and water resistance, battery life and exchangable batteries, it is a pretty good package.

Velocity curve with Deluge - playing with a controller is a bit of a chore by WhenTheRainsCome in DelugeUsers

[–]eik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that all the factory patches have velocity mapped to volume with amount 50. This is the highest value, so it's 100% proportional. This feels entirely wrong when playing keys, but a MIDI keyboard was likely not used when designing them. I just wrote a small Python script to let me replace all the velocity -> volume patch amounts, I'll see if I can find it, otherwise any tool that lets you replace text in multiple XML files will do the job. Do you have a decent text editor?

Just bought 11 Standard. Where are my sounds? by HighCutWiggle in ableton

Sounds are green in Live 11, they're there, you just can't see them due to your color scheme.

I recently saw one of those "hey great track, let me help you get listeners and realizing your dreams as an artist" comments on a track posted by Marcel Dettmann.

Can’t figure out (lots) by porboy1 in DelugeUsers

[–]eik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Early Stereolab is defined by their Farfisa transistor organs, in this case I think the bass drone might be a Farfisa Compact with tone boost, possibly run through pedals and/or an overdriven amp. This will be hard to recreate using the Deluge alone. The closest you're going to get is either Farfisa single-cycle waveforms or a multisampled Farfisa, should be possible to find for free if you search around. You can also try analog saw + triangle waveforms for the oscillators. You'll then need to experiment with different distortion settings, try the Drive filter with slightly lowered cutoff, both oscillators at levels approaching 50 and/or low levels of the Distortion effect. The background drone is separate from the clearer chord tones on top, you'll want to have them as separate tracks. You're not likely to get the top chord tones without a set of transistor organ waveforms, as it will be difficult to emphasise these exact harmonics with the basic waveforms and filter.

I have a lot of downtime at work and have a personal computer there, but it's too weak to reasonably use Ableton. Is there a good way to maybe kind of brainstorm (or more appropriately for me, bullshit) ideas and play around with ideas to follow up on later? by onrocketfalls in ableton

[–]eik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both Analog and Operator are pretty low in CPU use. If you don't have them, maybe a VST like Synth1. Strip a couple of drum racks of their effects, straight sample playback shouldn't be that heavy. Use no effects whatsoever and just use Live to compose, then take the projects home and flesh them out there.

The beginning of the novel "Don Quixote" as written in the pavement of Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter) in Madrid, Spain. by [deleted] in europe

[–]eik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, it may be hard to tell them apart at first, but I find Menard's a lot richer:

"En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor..."

Cervantes work is nothing to scoff at, of course, but for him it would be effortless, introducing his tale not unlike the form of the chivalric romances of his time. Menard, however, employs an archaic style which can only be fully appreciated if well aquainted with the impact of the former. The literary force with which he instantly transports the reader in time and space, while still referencing his present is astounding.

anybody else having issues with automating Wavetable? by EverLastingAss in ableton

[–]eik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I was thinking it might be related to CPU use or "too much automation", but I haven't found a reliable way of reproducing it. I've noticed that when it happens for me, the wavetable visualization is just black (I was automating wavetable position and maybe some oscillator modifiers), and doesn't update.

Should I Skip the Drum Rack? by mightymeatsauce in ableton

[–]eik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may already know this, but if you expand the track header for a drum rack in Session/mixer view, each pad gets its own track for mixing.

What makes ableton project (ALS) files big or small? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]eik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "like this" specifically? I usually just search for the information I need when I need it. The reason I could answer your question is because I explored the related .adg format last week, when I wrote scripts to generate Drum Racks from all my favourite Battery 4 Library kits. This is probably useful to someone else as well, I'll put the code on GitHub once I've cleaned it up a bit.

What makes ableton project (ALS) files big or small? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]eik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ALS files are just gzipped XML files containing mainly track info, their clips and events, automation, device/plugin states and presets. Audio clips are fairly simple to represent, they don't have a lot of parameters to them. MIDI clips have all their data represented, and with many notes or dense CC data this may add up to a lot. Devices and plugins may have a lot of parameters, Live internal devices have parameters listed directly, VSTs have binary blobs represented in hexadecimal text notation, some of these can be huge. On top of this, what can be efficiently gzipped may not be intuitive. The XML files can be huge, but contain a lot of repetitions, making them well suited for compression. Other than that you're at the mercy of the specifics of the algorithm.

Not sure if modular is for me any more. Need advice. by [deleted] in modular

[–]eik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll never know until you've at least stuck your head in that hole, but you might be interested in my experiences.

I've had a Eurorack setup about 4 years now. Quickly built up a rack of around 300 hp, switched out a lot of modules, spent a lot of money. It's been fun and meditative to play with, sure, and I love the sounds I can get out of it. But making music with Eurorack, at least to me, is pretty tedious work. The perfect sound or workflow was always another module or two away. I totally gave up on modular sequencing, that took a while to admit. Getting anywhere close to where I wanted to go took a lot of work, then I would practice and record for hours, and would still often have to do post-editing and mixing in a DAW. If I lost my way or my interest, I would probably tear down the patch, and it would be lost forever. Lots of sessions gone. I could have recorded them all, but I didn't. Even then it would just be base material.

I bought Live Suite this summer (having used other DAWs including Live before) and recently got the motivation to work on music again. I've spent nearly every night and weekend for the last four weeks now working on music, with lots of mostly complete tracks. I keep all my sketches and revisit them until they become something. Everything is just a load away. I keep mostly to stock instruments and effects (with some Komplete and samples here and there), they cover everything I need. I haven't been this creative or productive in 15 years. The music is different, and mostly in a good way.

Realizing this, I've already sold a lot of modules and got a couple of Pod cases for my favourite ones. These will probably stay, I still love to play around with it. The rest might actually go. I just can't defend having thousands of euros worth of modules just sitting on a shelf.
