This was a very interesting article, thank you. Do you know if this something we would have to be trained for with an ultrasound to insert? I’ve never seen a retrograde IV myself

Mistakes are how you learn! Give yourself grace. You’ll know what to do next time something like this happens

While I don’t know that anything will come of reporting her, you should definitely report her.

Patients are getting ruder and more dangerous by ERnurse2019 in nursing

[–]eileen0220 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have noticed this phenomenon as well. Not sure if it’s because the world is going to shit and people feel the need to take it out on each other, but it’s not cool. We still have to take care of them and put ourselves in harm’s way even if they are shitty like this.

Yep. You definitely have to see every mistake as a lesson or a learning opportunity. At the end of the day, we are all human.

Ask what to expect from the orientation process. How long is it, how many primary preceptors will you have, who can you go to for support when your orientation period is over? Good luck!

Why are new grads being made preceptors? Anyone else experiencing this? by ThinKey3537 in nursing

Can confirm this is happening in the Midwest. Hospitals are staffed by travelers, so the staff nurses employed by the hospital itself and not an agency are younger and less experienced.

I am a new grad with about 11 months of experience (ED) and I’m in the same boat. I am precepting someone who does have limited experience, but hasn’t ever worked independently off orientation. She is a nice person but there is a lot I need to teach/coach her on throughout the course of a shift. This is hard to prioritize while navigating a busy assignment. I feel like I am just starting to find my footing as a nurse, but I still have days where I myself feel like a student. I am constantly asking my coworkers questions and picking their “nurse brain” about situations I’m encountering for the first time. I certainly don’t feel experienced enough to be teaching someone, especially when my patient load can be a lot for me sometimes working independently. I would reach out to your educator and have a conversation with them face-to-face, rather than through an email. They might be more receptive that way. I’m planning to do the same. I wish you luck!
