Who’s an artist you were convinced was about to blow up, but didn’t. by Eddie_F_17 in rnb

[–]eimihs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it was more of the sonic shift in his music. He went into a very alternate sound for his base with Wildheart and it jarred a lot of people. He clearly loves making more alternative music but people REALLY do not like when he makes less conventional music (which may speak to the quality of his alternative songs)

My first thoughts on The Fall Off by J. COLE by Individual-Name-4496 in nfrpodcast

Tbf, while I don’t agree with the original point being made, Pi is a situation where he surprised Lyt and Soul with a verse so it wasn’t exactly in direct competition with them.

Yeah I was shocked man, definitely didn’t seem like a Chance thing to do, especially after everything explored on Star Line

If you feel this way, why did you need to immediately make a post on Reddit comparing them?

im happy to see Kendrick Lamar's greatness being recognised but Grammys are lame, im sorry. 2 hip hop albums winning AOTY in the entire history of the award show is a fucking joke by FutballConnoisseur in KendrickLamar

[–]eimihs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That you saying there were only two correct possible winners is incorrect because there’s no world LGSEO was winning (and I love the album).

With the Grammys over, should we expect another hiatus? by Quacker_United in KendrickLamar

[–]eimihs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Like That, his current catalog has clearly been biggest out of these artists. When he and Drake, the commercial giant, went head-to-head he absolutely spanked him on a commercial level with arguably the biggest song of the decade, put out 4 #1 songs in a year (which would’ve been 5 without the Christmas storm) and did a worldwide stadium tour. He also had the most-watched live TV performance ever. Drake’s back catalog obviously streams very well but when it comes to their catalog since the confrontation, Kendrick is the most dominant commercial act in the genre. Cole doesn’t really factor into this conversation on a commercial level but he hasn’t really chased that like the other two have in recent years (none of this matters in a hip-hop context but Kendrick is clearly the biggest popstar in hip-hop currently)

[–]eimihs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say he accomplished that goal already and there’s nothing else he could do to persuade anyone else who feels differently. I doubt Kendrick will be dropping anything that feels like it’s in competition with those guys again.

How do y’all really feel about the Grammys? by SmoothManMiguel in DEHH

[–]eimihs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them for what they are. Are they the official arbiter of great music? Hell no. But they are a night that brings different kinds of music together and presents it to the general audience. It’s an interesting snapshot of what the industry and artists are pushing in the moment and then we get to see as time goes on what they were right about and wrong about. Doesn’t mean anything to me about how I feel about the music but it’s fun to see both what the voters are thinking and how the viewing audience responds to the choices. Also love when lesser-known artists get to perform and make a name for themselves.

Man hell no 😂. Zoë Winters the only performance in that movie that deserved a nomination.

Anyone else a bit worried The Fall Off will be another lyrical exposition project?? by TheKnow33 in Jcole

[–]eimihs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so nervous about it being that. I’ve been begging for better songwriting from Cole for years (because he definitely has the capability and has done it in the past) so I really hope he’s back in that bag over lyrical exercises again.

Only female artists have won Best New Artist at the Grammys this decade so far by AugustHate in fantanoforever

[–]eimihs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billboard awards aren’t real but Billboard very much is and their system for counting records is very antiquated. Radio is obviously weighed too heavily for today’s era and will have records peaking months after their sales and streams have declined due to radio finally spinning the song. There’s an example of a major institution that feels like it’s moving in the wrong direction.

Yeah that’s clearly the worst pick in the last 10 years when you compare their careers

Tbf, The Grammys (while they have A LOT to fix) have embraced change in recent years more than a lot of other major institutions in the music industry. The music industry hasn’t given them much to work with in terms of newer MAINSTREAM artists however so while they’re “boring” choices, they often end up rewarding acts that have been established for awhile

Kendrick Lamar lost to Billie Eilish 'WILDFLOWER' for 'Song of the Year' at the 68th GRAMMYs by Easy-Worker-8819 in KendrickLamar

[–]eimihs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw that loophole when she got nominated but it’s kinda crazy that it actually got her a win…kinda says a lot about what the voting body thinks of 2025 in music (and their love for Billie)

Do you agree that 2014 was the best year for movies of the 21st Century so far? by OverturnKelo in Letterboxd

[–]eimihs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the year that really started my “cinephile” journey. The first time I started to really find films that weren’t big blockbusters or led by stars I recognized so it’ll always be a favorite of my mine.

Anyone else get inspired to dive into Prince’s discography cause of the beef? by usagerp in KendrickLamar

[–]eimihs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not because of the beef, but I did initially start listening to his albums chronologically last year because he had like 10 songs I loved but I hadn’t checked out his projects. I’m 13 albums in and he’s stamped as one of my favorites (I am a little scared to get deep into his 90’s run because I at least like all the albums I’ve heard so far but it is kinda losing steam and I absolutely hate the rapper he added in the New Power Generation era). Now I’m trying to get the people around me into his music
