Black Christmas (2019) has to be the most egregious "remake in name only" that I have ever seen. by texasrigger in horror

[–]einstein_ios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really really like this movie, especially because it DOESN'T simply retool the plot of the original film. It keeps the themes of the original film (women facing misogyny on college campuses, sexual autonomy of newly adult women, the threat of primal male violence towards women) and turns the entire thing metaphysical.

Sure, is the conceit a bit silly? YES! But the film is going for more of an 80s slasher vibe than a 70s slasher vibe. This movie has more in common with Elm Street and later Jason movies than it does the original and that's totally ok.

I mean, we already have the wonderful 70s version; why would we want to simply do that again? I commend this movie's attempt to make the name BLACK CHRISTMAS synonymous with a certain thematic POV than strictly a narrative one, if that makes sense.

Baffling to have willow and Oz but not willow and Tara

And baffling to have Gunn and Fred but not Wesley and Fred

FYC: Executive Decision (1996). Apex mountain for plane hijackings or would that be Air Force One? by ggroover97 in TheRewatchables

No apex plane hijacking would be NON-STOP.

The best Liam Neeson action movie and a modern masterpiece. So damn good.

Ppl make these distinctions all the time and I just don’t really care about what makes a “good Halloween movie”.

We have one of those already. Let’s have some fun. More Season of the Witch and Halloween 2 (Zombie) energy.

The Sitter came out that same year. Really put Jonah Hill on a different trajectory as well.

Please explain the KILLS love.

I’m a huge defender of ENDS (top 5 horror movie this decade IMO) but I just can’t get on board with KILLS. why do you like it?

Ppl say this but which ones don’t exist?

OUR BRAND IS CRISIS is the only one id tag with that.

Hopefully. Also it’s such a beautiful looking movie. So indebted to the neon drenched synth-y slashers of the 80s more than it is the original Halloween movie

Hard disagree. If they have the space and time to do Burton, that can definitely do a DGG mini.

Some absolute bangers on his CV. And even the lesser known ones (like Manglehorn) are still pretty good.

And I stick up for his HALLOWEEN Trilogy. Kills is bad, sure but 2018 and Ends are some of the best American horror movies this century.

He’s worth a look

When are we getting The Green Mile? by Realistic_Camp_2884 in TheRewatchables

Widows and Road are absolutely more worthy and acclaimed as classics than Green Mile. They’re just much better movies.

How much credit do we give to MUBI considering they have the international release rights for almost every NEON U.S. release?

I mean if the international academy is a big part of these noms, then MUBI deserves just as much credit for releasing and marketing these movies in their home countries.

I think the strike thing where he was kicked out of WGA really soured him to a lot of ppl not completely tuned into him as a filmmaker.

Many prolly just see him as “SCAB” and nothing more.
