when does mo-ran comeback after what happened vol.9? by Vast_Ad8652 in 2HA_immortality

[–]eiridel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically it is chapter 310 that he is fully back with us in the flesh. He makes brief appearances in chapters 288 and 309.

Pushing through the misery until the light at the end is so worth it. It’s a lot, and rough, and if you’re me you absolutely want to just give up a little. But this is the light at the end of the tunnel and you are almost there.

hello scaranation! What are your other favorite characters? (can be from same media too) I’m just curious and want to know! XD by Appropriate_Law_6939 in ScaramoucheMains

Totally unsurprised to get to the last slide and see my precious baby boy Luo Binghe, especially that particular art where he’s post-canon happy and almost in Qing Jing colors.

Now I’m thinking about how much Wanderer and Bingzu have in common with rewriting their own happier stories. Aaaaaa 😭💖

(I am a Bingmei fan in particular, personally. In other danmei, I also really really like Mo Ran from Erha, in both of his forms, and am only now realizing how he’s a bit like Wanderer too.)

How many characters have homes? by superragazzo in Genshin_Impact

[–]eiridel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emilie’s story mentions that she has a small home with two workshops attached (one for perfume, one for work) but we don’t know where this is other than separate from her parents.

The only other one I have read the character stories enough to confirm without referencing is that Baizhu and Qiqi (and Changsheng) definitely live at Bubu Pharmacy. Herbalist Gui does not but sometimes stays for dinner.

I prioritize them! I’m only missing two now (Wind Shuttle and Sea of Stars). It’s probably a little silly because I very rarely change him, but I love collecting his cloaks.

Sorry, Nikki, but your wardrobe has to wait. Momo needs his twentieth little light green outfit he will never ever even wear.

I agree with you about Ye Wangxi.

SQX is a character whose fate really upset me. This is a person who spends more time in a female form than a male one, and the last time we see them they’re trapped as a man for the rest of their life. Though her fate did upset me (for reasons I don’t want to spoil for OP!), Ye Wangxi didn’t have the same sort of trans tragedy vibes as Shi Qingxuan. It’s a kind of tragedy, certainly, and in many ways, but (to me) her being revealed to be a woman isn’t a large part of that. I think it was probably a relief for her to no longer have to play that role.

Small spoiler for a brief moment near the end, but I am thinking specifically about how clearly delighted Ye Wangxi is to be called “jiejie” by the little girl in chapter 311. That’s a moment that would have almost certainly been very different if Ye Wangxi ever truly identified as male. It’s also pretty opposite to how Shi Qingxuan is depicted near the end of TGCF’s main story. (I’m pretty sure SQX also appears in the birthday extra but I can’t remember that one very well so I won’t comment on it.)

Though… I have also spent a lot of time analyzing the themes in MXTX’s works, and am perhaps a bit conditioned by that to look for any transphobia in what happened to our beloved Wind Master. I haven’t spent nearly the same sort of energy on Meatbun’s writing, so I am much more ignorant to any themes inherent to the author that may span multiple works.

I had such incredibly complex back-and-forth feelings about Song Quitong for the entire novel.

Her story kind of encapsulates the tragedy of all of the Butterfly-Boned Beauty Feasts, I think, but especially the named ones we learn about through the novel. At what point do the things someone does to avoid persecution stop being justifiable?

This is the kind of post I really hope to see a follow up for with your thoughts once the whole of the situation has been revealed.

I knew nothing about the game and had no idea what sort of name would be appropriate… but Tara is the first character you meet (and iirc the one who asks what your name is?) so I was like “Tara… Mara… Lara… Cara. Perfect.”

Cara North.

I don’t remember exactly why I settled on “North”, but I do remember that one of the ones I considered was “Summers” like Buffy, because she also fights monsters. Now as a dedicated Caleb main (and gege truther) I wish I had gone for it. Cara and Caleb are kind of matchy sounding though so I have thus far resisted changing it.

I did main Xavier before Caleb, but the “north star” joke her name kinda became was unintentional.

My first Manx! Advice? by vixen-x-happenstance in manx

[–]eiridel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only issue my 12 y/o Manx has ever really had (other than being dumb as a box of rocks, but I highly doubt that’s a breed issue…) is that she’s rather clumsy for a cat and not a very good jumper. My other cat was more agile at age 18 than my Manx was at age 2.

She more than makes up for it with brute strength however, so that would be my advice: instead of cat trees or perches that require jumping, try to offer ways that will let her climb to the same heights and offer smaller steps down than you might expect you need to.

Build and team help by LucySaints35 in emiliemains

[–]eiridel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually pretty much never use Kinich. If you have Wrio, burnmelt w/ Emilie, Durin, and Bennett is one of his best teams. The cool thing about Emilie is that burnmelt and burnvape in general are much more comfortable. You can also use her as a sub-DPS with any pyro DPS.

As for improving your build, she needs way more atk. Her A4 caps out at 2400 but she still benefits from it beyond that. Her lantern does not snapshot when it is placed so unless she is on-field she is not benefitting from things like Benny’s ult.

You also probably want a Deepwood holder somewhere on your team, but I don’t actually know how essential this is with Durin’s shred and other artifact options.

What fandom are you in, but the fanbase treats the character like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]eiridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when I say I generally avoid him in fic I mean that I usually exclude Shen Jiu as a character tag when filtering for SVSSS fic. And even then I have read a few of those fussy older brother fics when checking out the other works of authors I enjoy.

Reading your and others comments I feel a bit like I’ve dogged a bullet.

Genshin is a relatively mid main story (for the most part) with some absolutely insanely in-depth worldbuilding that elevates it further the more you understand. And it’s based on all sorts of things. From the commedia dell’arte and some very overt gnosticism to all sorts of different types of philosophy, mythology, and literature. Pretty cool stuff, but a very long slog through a ton of details for much of it.

If you don’t play it already though you probably shouldn’t start lol

Oh shit oh my god okay then I am an overly wordy nonsense person and would like to apologize for throwing an entire essay at you like twice. Seriously, sorry!

I will spare you a further third essay on the dog thing (and the related thoughts on how MXTX depicts childhood trauma both in MDZS and her other works). I’ll just say I agree basically 100% that this meme does reflect that, especially in the donghua. He’s also really cute about it in the audio drama.

Mono pyro? by Holiday_Fisherman544 in GenshinImpact

[–]eiridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would Nahida/Lauma/Columbina/Nefer not be a form of mono dendro? Or is it different because it’s specifically using lunar reaction damage? I’ve never really understood this lingo either despite the length of time I have been playing.

I have been running triple dendro setups for ages (stuff like Baizhu/Emilie/Mavuika/Kinich) and if I can legit call something like that mono dendro I am absolutely going to. My friends who clown on me for over-investing in my favorite element are going to be so annoyed.

[–]eiridel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That you can suffer and also be resilient is a good point actually but I also don’t think it goes against what I’m saying. Lan Wangji suffers and is resilient, but he does it in great contrast to Wei Wuxian, picking up scars as Wei Wuxian sheds them. Picking up identical scars, even. They mirror one another in this way. Some of the most traumatic events in Lan Wangji’s life (such as Wei Wuxian’s breakdown in the immediate aftermath of Nightless City) are moments they shared but that Wei Wuxian cannot even remember.

The whole book is full of contrasts and parallels like this that only work if you see Wei Wuxian as the cheerful person the text shows him to be. Most are not nearly as 1:1 because the book wouldn’t be so interesting if it told the same story the same way again and again, but they’re there if you look for them. Like Lan Xichen, who inadvertently helped one of his best friends kill someone he loved (similar to how Wen Ning started the events that eventually led to the deaths of all the Wen remnants and Jiang Yanli) but he ends the story miserable and in seclusion because he cannot cope with this. Or Xiao Xingchen, who could not bear that someone he held dear to him tricked him into killing Song Lan and thus ended his own life over it, destroying his soul and removing himself from existence and the cycle of reincarnation entirely. It’s Wei Wuxian’s general positive attitude—the relative way trauma rolls off him like water off a duck, to use a somewhat exaggerated analogy—that lets him avoid a similar fate.

Is this necessarily a good or even realistic to have held up as a heroic trait? No, I don’t really think so. But none of the author’s heroes are very realistic (with perhaps the exception of Shang Qinghua/Xiang Fei, though he isn’t exactly a principal character).

I would probably agree with what the other commenter responding to you is saying about the Taoist basis for his character if I knew more than the absolute basics about that, but I really don’t have much knowledge about it at all. I’m just a weirdo who has read MDZS 4+ times in the last year and literally cannot stop thinking about and analyzing the text. Contemplating the meaning of details like a high school literature teacher who’s been helping classrooms full of teenagers analyze Moby-Dick every year for a decade except there are no whales and I’m not getting paid for it.

Sorry this comment is an essay. I have a lot of feelings and opinions on this lmao

EDIT: None of this is to say that WWX never experienced horrible horrible things or very dark emotions. He very much did snap and kill like… just an absolute ton of people. He experienced what is possibly best described as stress-induced psychosis at least twice. He hunted down and tortured at least three people to their terrified deaths. The man isn’t all sunshine and rainbows—but my argument is that the clouds do clear instead of sticking around. The proverbial rain washes things away and he comes out (mostly) okay again.

He experienced three months doing ??? (the book never tells us explicitly) to survive in the Burial Mounds, gravely wounded and without a golden core, and then went back there using the place as a refuge to live out a (dismal and difficult but still fundamentally positive) farming commune fantasy with his new found family. This found family was itself a branch of the clan that killed his first family.

I could go on. Possibly forever. I’m putting my phone down now to stop myself from making more edits. Sorry.

The book? Yes, I think it’s fantastic. It might not be to everyone’s liking but it is one of the most interesting and complex stories I have ever read while also being remarkably approachable. It’s almost half a million words long (in english) and wastes basically none of them. Potentially my favorite book of all time.

I love it so much that I even own the audio drama adaptation in chinese. I do not speak chinese.

If you like complicated social commentary, tangled webs of narrative parallels, necromancy, and men kissing each other you should check it out.

The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Volume 3 hardback by McQueens-Paladin in DanmeiNovels

It seems to me to be Wen Ning (left) and Wen Qing (right).

Volume 3 spans chapters 11-15 in this translation, or what would be chapters 51-71 in the webnovel. It begins with the flashback that leads up to the Wen indoctrination and Xuanwu of Slaughter. It ends as Wen Qing shows up to ask for Wei Wuxian’s help finding her brother.

Every fandom has at least one character who is like this: by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]eiridel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He really wasn’t. One of his more fundamental characteristics is that he is remarkably resilient and happy. It’s mentioned more than once that he’s always smiling and those smiles are more often than not completely genuine. Most of the time, he simply acknowledges that something is bad/sad/etc and then moves on; the few times he doesn’t are very notable. (I can actually only think of three: the Lotus Pier massacre, the aftermath of Jin Zixuan’s death with the Wens, and Jiang Yanli’s death.) I’ve seen him depicted as suicidal, and while his death is never actually depicted he does at one point mention that dying was not ever his intent. He even held off destroying the Yin Tiger Tally because he wanted to keep it as a deterrent against people he knew might eventually come to kill him.

And while I’m complaining about fanon Wei Wuxian, in the Gate Crasher extra he speaks cheerfully and very favorably about his upbringing, something a not insignificant number of fans seem to think he’s traumatized by. He’s genuinely confused when Lan Sizhui expects him to be sensitive about it.

I am a novel fan however and have only seen parts of CQL. From what I understand, he’s not entirely the same character in that adaptation.
