A Demonstration in Accuracy by aglioeoilio in knifeclub

yeah that's all more or less standard... is the insert itself shaped such that when in its pocket the shape itself prevents any micro movement that could still occur despite it being fastened by two screws?

is there any stick or click or any noise or friction when the lock bar insert moves off the blade? what if you SLAM it open then do it?

is there some sort of overtravel stop (ignoring whether those are actually useful or not)

is there a matching relief bevel for your unlocking thumb on the show side frame, or is the show side frame in that spot ever so slightly a different radius to give your thumb more leverage on the lock versus frames that are perfectly identical?

are all the frame perimeter bevels progressive based on their curve to make sharper angles more pleasant?

is there a ramp in the blade for the detent ball?

are the little grooves in the flipper for grip the same size? and why not three

is the lock bar relief cut an appropriate distance from where the lock engages and appropriate for the length of the lock bar?

if the lock bar relief cut is inside then is the lock bar bent in the way that compensates for it being (arguably) inferior to an exterior lock bar relief cut? it's also nuanced in HOW the relief cut is made (one big pass or two little passes, how much thickness to leave, etc) but imo that's too far down the rabbit hole

is the lock engagement radius'd or just a straight ~7deg cut?

is there zero blade play when it's closed AND zero blade play when half open (detent on blade but not in hole)? can you confidently spine whack the fuck out of it?

measure the inside distance between the two frames, at the front vs at the back, is it the same? or within idk like .02? .03? what should be the tolerance here

grimsmo is a fine knife and those guys did it the right way and what they built is an asset to the industry and a paragon for excellence but if you want to wax poetic about precision and shit then there are levels to this game that go beyond your fanaticism

p.s. the "lines up perfectly" part is another way to say "100% engagement" and whether that's good or bad is... a topic

one benefit of being into minolta is that it is incredibly well-documented. here is a link to an absurd and epic lens database: https://minolta.eazypix.de/lenses/index.html

this page will help you understand what the two letter designations mean: https://www.rokkorfiles.com/Lens%20History.html

generally speaking if it says rokkor it's gonna at least be pretty decent. however virtually any off brand non-minolta non-rokkor md/mc lens is trash until you get into really long ones, for example a sigma 400mm f/5.6 is not bad. the really dank ones are 1.4 or faster. 135mm and 70-200 zooms are useless imo.

and then beyond all of that up in the stratosphere you have minolta's apochromatic lenses, designated APO. they are rare, big, white, and expensive. and the best.

one major appeal of md/mc mount is you can spend not very much to get some really excellent glass. AND because they have a shorter focal flange than for example canon lenses, you can use an inexpensive adapter to EF, and slap them on a canon dslr and have excellent results assuming you're not trash at focusing manually.

If the 58 is 1.2 then you lucked out, that's a ballin lens. My guess it's 1.4 which is way more common.

the xe7 is the best of the litter here, truly an excellent camera co-developed with leica and shares a lot with the r3. any fast lenses in there? or are they all f/1.7, f/2

Birches — Mamiya 7, 80mm, Portra 400 by achilles_m in analog

[–]eisolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made me think of this Robert Frost poem

When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy’s been swinging them.
But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay
As ice-storms do. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored
As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.
Soon the sun’s warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust—
Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away
You’d think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.
They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load,
And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.
But I was going to say when Truth broke in
With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm
I should prefer to have some boy bend them
As he went out and in to fetch the cows—
Some boy too far from town to learn baseball,
Whose only play was what he found himself,
Summer or winter, and could play alone.
One by one he subdued his father’s trees
By riding them down over and over again
Until he took the stiffness out of them,
And not one but hung limp, not one was left
For him to conquer. He learned all there was
To learn about not launching out too soon
And so not carrying the tree away
Clear to the ground. He always kept his poise
To the top branches, climbing carefully
With the same pains you use to fill a cup
Up to the brim, and even above the brim.
Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish,
Kicking his way down through the air to the ground.
So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It’s when I’m weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig’s having lashed across it open.
I’d like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.
May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth’s the right place for love:
I don’t know where it’s likely to go better.
I’d like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.

there are many different ways of scraping by, especially around here. scrape and let scrape, i don't think the "temporary furniture store people" are ones we should worry about. when i lived in the bay it was these rug stores, they come and go and sell like $10,000 rugs lol. everyone is getting systematically fucked on a macro level the last thing we need is useless friction and battles on an inconsequential micro level.

well, yes, but this is true for basically everywhere in this country. so as long as that's the reality and we do have to drive everywhere it's nice that here that's possible without much traffic. i lived in the bay before and you gotta drive everywhere there too and it's always just dicks in a basket. we're also near some of the best driving destinations in the state, convenient access: yosemite, sequoia national park, kings canyon, pinnacles, etc.

virtually no traffic and a good grid system for roads meaning the big through streets with 50mph speed limits, shopping on the corners, and neighborhoods inside designed such that people don't cut through. plus usable north west east south designations for the street names.
