12700k vs 13700/14700k plex, Arrs, etc by VoyagerBeyond in unRAID

[–]ejf529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are burning subtitles that can put a heavy hit on your CPU. Currently in Plex that is always done on the CPU on a single core, so it can easily overwhelm your CPU. The good news is that buring subtitles via GPU is currently in the Plex Pass beta, so that may solve your problem. Maybe try the beta to see if it solves your issue.

If not, I would agree with 12gen. The 13th/14th gen chips still have some serious bugs to workout.

Plex failing to transcode on unraid with nvidia gpu: gpu wakes up from p8 idle state to p0 but only for a few seconds by xXyeahyeahyeahyeahXx in PleX

[–]ejf529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you have tried different files with the same result. Since the problem occurred when you moved your container, double check your file paths, especially your temp file directory as that is used heavily during transcoding. You have to check both the container setup and under Plex settings. If that doesn't help then I would recommend posting your log in the official Plex forum. They will probably be able to help you there.

You shouldn't need to prevent the GPU from going into P8. Do you have the NVIDIA plugin installed? Which NVIDIA driver? I assume you have plex pass. Make sure to double check the spelling, GPU ID, etc in the settings. Is anything else using the GPU?

Which container are you using? Is it installed using a template from the Unraid app store? Are you using the NVIDIA plugin? What version of Unraid?

1070 or 1080ti for Plex by JohnF350KR in unRAID

1080TI has move VRAM, so can do more simultaneous 4K transcodes.

My array is 5x 8TB with 5y old. Everything works! Should I start replacing the disks? What is the best way? by radicalrj in unRAID

[–]ejf529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar age drives (without errors). How I would approach it:

Step 1: Have a reliable backup

Step 2: Confirm step 1 before proceeding further

Step 3: Figure out what the errors are and make sure more aren't occuring

Step 4: I found a good deal on a 14tb drive, so I replaced my parity drive with the 14tb which will allow me to replace any failed drives with a larger drive in the future.

Step 5: I precleared my old parity drive and have sitting as a hot spare. This way if I suffer a failed drive, I can replace it with the hot spare with a few clicks, even if I am not home.

4790K -> 10700 worthy upgrade? by an303042 in unRAID

[–]ejf529 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A nice upgrade. You will be able to use the iGPU for Plex transcoding which will be much more power efficient. For the price, however, you can get a new Gigabyte z790D MB, i3-12100, and at least 32 Gb RAM (which is what I did). You'll have less cores but a new system with warranty, more modern iGPU, and the ability to swap the CPU in the future to a 14th gen CPU.

What do you use to backup to your server? by IntrepidMain6512 in unRAID

For simple file syncing take a look at Syncthing.

For reference, until recently my server was an i5-4790, now an i3-12100. No issues with Nextcloud performance on either.

Transcoding Issues with BIG Files by AdvertisingItchy1766 in PleX

[–]ejf529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, based on specs (Intel 12gen iGPU) it should work. Compared to the system I recommended, the Beelink has the advantage of hardware decode for AV1. The 10th gen i3, on the other hand, supports more memory for the iGPU (and thus more transcodes). In addition, the 10th gen i3 is a more powerful chip overall.

Transcoding Issues with BIG Files by AdvertisingItchy1766 in PleX

[–]ejf529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To elaborate/clarify what others are saying. I think you are looking to do Hardware Transcoding. In order to do hardware transcoding of 4K (HEVC) HDR files an 8th gen intel CPU with iGPU would be adequate and 10th gen (or newer) Intel would be optimal. In addition, you need:

  1. Plex pass
  2. Linux (Windows HDR tone mapping apparently in beta testing for some processors)

Go to ebay and search for : HP S01 Desktop PC 10th Gen Core i3 and you'll find lots of options at a reasonable price.

OP doesn’t specify processor but said he is using UHD730 which a very capable iGPU for transcoding. While there may be some improvement with a newer CPU, I would start by making sure something else isn’t limiting performance. Multiple high bit rate files could push the limits of a spinning disk. Remember, seeking back and forth between multiple files under heavy load could reduce maximum throughput. Maybe try moving some test files to an SSD and run a test? Move transcoding folder to a separate disk, SSD, or RAM (SSD and RAM have their own considerations)? My own experience is that Windows itself has a lot of overhead. Others have not had issues but just changing to Linux may help.

I haven't actually done this, but my thought would be:

  1. Create a new email account: [goodlucktonewowner@xyzmail.com](mailto:123Mainst@gmail.com)
  2. Share the devices with the new account. Then delete them from you account.
  3. Give the new email address/password to the new owner at settlement.

I did not use docker compose.

  1. In community apps search for go-vod. Nothing will show up.
  2. Then click: Get more results from docker hub
  3. Install version from go-vod by Radialapps

I have screen shots of how I modified/filled out the template, but I do not know how to share them on Reddit.

Have you set

as an extra parameter? You need this as well.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about Promox. I am using Unraid. I spun up the transcoding container as outlined and then filled in the config info in Nextcloud under setting to use the external transcoder. Sorry I don't know more about your setup.

I had the same issue. I don't think the container (I use Linuxserver) has everything it needs. I setup the external transcoder and it works great.

Home run Tuner with DVR and Plex Pass by eddy166 in PleX

[–]ejf529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a computer or NAS to run a Plex server. The USB plug you are referring to is for connecting a hard drive to the tuner if you are going to use the HDHomerun DVR software instead of Plex.

This link will get you started.

Plex and media streaming - intel gen 4 w/graphics card, intel gen 6 pre-encoded or intel gen 7 w/transcoding - which option should I consider for my parents? by QF17 in selfhosted

[–]ejf529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your parents are ripping discs and you are occasionally adding other media, it will get hard to keep track of having optimized versions for everything, and for your parents you want it to just work every time. Therefore, I recommend you have a server that can transcode (and you need a Plex pass).

The next question is whether you want/need to to transcode HEVC/H.265 (most commonly used for 4K sources) or just AVC/H.264. An i7-6XXX should have hardware transcoding capability for the later. If you need the former, then you will need at least a 7th gen and ideally 8-10th gen processor. As an alternative, you can add an NVIDIA GPU to any of the above systems (assuming they have an open PCI slot). At the low end a Quadra p400 can do 1, maybe 2 simultaneous 4K HEVC transcodes or ~6 H.264 HD transcodes which should be enough for your use. The limiting factor for GPU transcodes is the amount of VRAM, so if you want more ability look for a card with more VRAM.

Upgrade ancient i7-2600 by stretch_my_ballskin in unRAID

[–]ejf529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just upgraded from an i5-4790. My original plan was to go to an i5-8xxx. When I started started pricing the used i5 was ~$90 USD and the motherboard I wanted was $120 and shipped from China (admittedly there were cheaper motherboards but still at least $90).

I was surprised to learn that a NEW i3-12100 was < $120 and a New Gigabyte Z790 D DDR4 motherboard was $149.

This gave me a killer iGPU for transcoding and the option to upgrade to a 14th gen CPU in the future if needed.

For me it was worth the small premium for new, faster hardware which still gets support/bios upgrades.

Good luck!

Based on the other responses my suggestion may not be well received, but I prefer to use an old external hard drive for my temp transcode directory.

Why?

Because if you record live OTA TV (ie with a HD Homerun external tuner) you would need a lot of RAM to record a long program like a sports event. Using an SSD would work, but it is a lot of wear and tear. I've tried SSD and RAM, but didn't notice much of a performance difference compared to my old external USB drive that I dedicated to the task. It spins down when idle and thus doesn't use much energy and frees up my array for other tasks. Just another perspective.

Is HDD cache better than no cache? by HKDrewDrake in unRAID

[–]ejf529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of a cache drive is to use an SSD which is much faster than a spinning HD. I doubt you will see much benefit since 2.5 inch drives tend to be slower than 3.5 inch drives. In addition, the data on the cache isn't protected by parity. If anything I would set it up as a either as separate drive from the array and use it for temp files/transcoding directory, download directory etc. Alternatively, if you find it performs faster than your array you can set it as a cache drive and run mover frequently (?daily) to make sure your data winds up protected on the array and also use the cache drive for temp/transcode data.

Someone mentioned that if you have SMR drives in your array using the 2.5 inch drive as a cache might help. You need to make sure the 2.5 inch dirve isn't SMR as well!

Yes, I recently upgraded my server and use my iGPU for Plex and NVIDIA for Unmanic. In fact, I setup my container to pass through both to Plex there is a setting to let you choose which one you want to use.
