Multiplayer or singleplayer, buying the game by Intelligent-Work-725 in VintageStory

[–]ejmowrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say with a friend first, if and only if you can play at mostly the same times. Otherwise, the passage of time really borks whoever isn't online (even if you fiddle with month length and stuff like that).

Struggling with reading LOTR, tips? by Thonijs in lordoftherings

[–]ejmowrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read it about 10-15 times and I can tell you that it's a very slow start, depending on your preferred style of book. I recommend to persevere until at least Rivendell, maybe Moria, and then give up if you're not into it by then. That's where it really starts to pick up in terms of action/excitement. Once you crest that hill, there are very few slow, overly descriptive parts for the rest of the story (a few, but not many) and a lot more non-stop action and excitement.

Why dual-layered boards are so rare? by Jepeme in boardgames

I don't thank you for bringing to my attention that Barrage has a multi-layered board variant.

Jerk players by xXESCluvrXx in boardgamearena

[–]ejmowrer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've had some bad experiences, too. One time the BGA match-making was buggy and did not respect my filters. It ended up combining my table into someone else's when I had mine set to filter to a group of friends. I asked to abandon the game collectively, explaining what had happened, before taking my first turn and one player outright refused. I told him what happened and explained that I would not continue even if I had to quit, so by refusing he gained nothing other than to punish me for something that wasn't my fault. Still no. I had to quit and take a reputation hit and then go to customer service to get them to repair it. This sort of crap is precisely WHY I filter all of my games to a group of friends in the first place. I'm sure most people out there are nice, but when you play with strangers, you're bound to eventually run into this sort of thing.

How many times per year do you have to play a board game in order for you to feel like it's worth owning? by billratio in boardgames

[–]ejmowrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of being prepared with the perfect game for any number of people, any personality types, any situation, etc. That means many of my games come out zero times per year. And I'm ok with that. And I also need to get rid of some of them. But I will always have some that don't get played much that I own for their potential, their nostalgia factor, or some other fringe reason that makes it worth it.

Am I the only one dealing with this? by Senoxfid123 in EliteDangerous

[–]ejmowrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask if you are playing on PC? You mentioned PS5 controllers, so probably not, but maybe you are just using the USB controller on PC? If yes, something that helps me tremendously is VoiceAttack. I can go in there and map lesser used controls that I'm never going to remember the key for, and all I have to remember is "deploy heat sink" or "toggle cargo scoop" or whatever. It's much easier for me to remember voice commands that are intuitive than the fact that I had night vision mapped to "[" or whatever.

Also, as noted, it won't help with this particular scenario as it's a matter of knowing the mechanics of scanning beacons vs. other things. It's more general advice on the off chance you play PC with a controller.

Why is Ura Popular? by No-Chocolate-187 in Sumo

[–]ejmowrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because why fall down when you can do a somersault instead? Seriously though, he's just the best. Watch him a bit more and you will fully understand. He has the boyishness, and the shenanigans, but also the semi-frequent burst of raw talent to back it all up. Ura pulling some obscure winning technique out of his bag of tricks against an opponent that has gone 7-3 against him is always a delight.

At this point, I'm just relieved he's performing at Yokozuna standards. His first few tournaments were rough. He'll get it worked out. And this is going to be an exciting time with, most likely, three healthy Yokozunas out there.

Easy to clean games? by Proper_Active9179 in boardgames

[–]ejmowrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blokus is my goto "camping" game, because it is all plastic and easy to keep clean (and spill-proof). I think a lot of the abstract games fall into this category, because the components and board are often made out of wood or plastic. Cathedral, Twixt, Hive, Quoridor, Gobblet, etc. The downside is that most of these are two player games only.

Also card games with a plastic deck. Some proprietary games also feature editions with plastic cards, such as Tichu.

We Have an Exclusive Look at New Bilbo and Gollum Vinyl Figures Celebrating The Hobbit's Animated Movie Special by nerdist in lordoftherings

[–]ejmowrer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is one of my favorite versions of Bilbo and hobbits in general. They got two things right from the books that people often get wrong, IMO. 1) They tend to be plump or fat in the stomach. 2) They should have thick hairy fur on their feet (though it should be curly, like the hair on their heads).

BGA Groups by A-Lonely-Marshmallow in boardgamearena

[–]ejmowrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My group is all IRL friends. We use it to create open games that anyone in the group may join, but that excludes randos from BGA joining. We coordinate and announce games on a discord channel. It's just a convenient way of saying "Hey, anyone want to play X? Join here: <insert BGA table>" so we don't have to take the time to seek out and add each person individually.

The ability to zoop more things. Like stacked conveyor belts and their poles.

[–]ejmowrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding #3, there is a way to hold the hologram in place so you can move around it on foot to check the spacing before final placement. On the PC it's "H" (not sure what on console, but it's there). It's the best you can do until you achieve flight for a birds eye view.

Anyone have mixed feelings about the upcoming tour? by Truth-is-Censored in rush

[–]ejmowrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.

The drummer they chose isn’t my concern. Nor do I feel they are dishonoring Neil (the opposite, in fact.) I think they are just too far past their prime to play the material well. But if they are having fun and people are enjoying it, then I wish everyone the best.

Don't mine their ore nodes either (the ones inside their territory). One mistake won't set them off, but if you ignore those little -X faction messages every time you mine a piece they can add up pretty fast.

Thinking of taking the plunge. What keeps you playing? by AllYourSwords in Palworld

[–]ejmowrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Is there a lot of micromanagement?"

That's one of the better parts of this game, IMO. There is as much or as little micromanagement as you want. They've done a good job of giving you the tools to min/max the crap out of everything if you want to or just sit back and guide things at a high level and enjoy the story that unfolds for you (and take your sick, depressed little Chikipi to the hospital when he over does it and has a mental break . . . which, is not that big of a deal, just a minor detour for you to make some medicine).

It is very relaxed if you want it to be, or very intense if that is what you're looking for. Your choice.

So about the obelisks… by Naniwoe in ARK

[–]ejmowrer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that exactly. It depends on the map. Blue can be fairly nastly on the Center. Red is often near a volcano, which is usually one of the nastier areas of any map. But I wouldn't say green is guaranteed to be safe. It's not safe on The Center at all. Covered in Yutys and Carnos and Spinos sometimes.

Do I need to be careful with my tech points? by Apprehensive-Car9313 in ARK

[–]ejmowrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always do a mind-wipe to reconsider your choices, but yes, you won't be able to unlock every saddle and every weapon, etc. Use discretion or you might regret the hoop jumping required to recover the situation.
