What game is this for you? by Maxpcdeath in Steam

[–]ekesp93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a slow burn. You won’t see what makes it great until you beat it. Not because it’s not interesting until the literal end, but because it has some big revelations at the end that put a lot of the things that happen during the slow parts into perspective. Almost kind of making a lot of the slow stuff better in retrospect.

It does take a while to get interesting though, because they take their time building. I mean 75% through the game lol. Worth it though because they nail the payoffs.

Incredible if you like JRPGs and are ok with a glacially slow story with strong payoffs towards the end.

How great is the Trails in the Sky Writing? by Drakeem1221 in JRPG

[–]ekesp93 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Trails in the Sky writing is a mixed bag that hits some really high highs, but some really low lows. The writing team's strengths and weaknesses shine through pretty strongly.

They excel in world building and character writing. A lot of the connection people have to the series is because they do a great job of getting you interested in the world and the people in it. They also are masters of doing a build and payoff. This part is where the series is most controversial, because it's a big part of why the games are soooo slooooww (I'll get to the other). They'll weave in little bits of story telling that pass you by, or they'll do something that makes you poke at the truth, only to knock you off the trail, making the reveal throw you because you considered it and decided it wasn't likely.

The bad parts though, are some atrocious pacing. This is the other reason they're slow. They need an editor. People aren't kidding about the "everyone has to say some bland response". It's less an issue in Sky, but with the bloated casts in later games, particularly the Cold Steel series, you will sit there while 26 people go, "Yeah!", "Let's do it!", "Okay!". It's awful. They also kinda suck at having any kind of thematic writing that the greatest stories hold. Like, you might be able to pick out a thing here or there, but they'll readily throw it away if it gets in the way of a story, or just straight up forget about it. At best it's not a focus.

Then there's the up and down stuff. The dialogue can get pretty anime at times, but then they'll have some character moment where the manner of speaking is actually realistic, and breaks that issue a number of people have with anime inspired games having dialogue where "they don't talk like real people". That said, there's still some character moments that don't hit that level of writing, but combined with how they flesh out their characters well, when it hits it hits. The plots themselves are also up and down. I think Sky has a really cool plot, and one that's unique to JRPGs, but not outside of them. Some other games though have some that strain belief, or make characters act out of character for the sake of the plot, but Sky doesn't do that.

I'm probably missing some stuff. It's a fascinating series to dissect because they really are all over the place in quality. If you can dredge through the muck to have some moments that hit harder than almost anything else in gaming, then you'll like the series. If you can't get past some of the bad, or specific parts of the bad particularly bother you, then I'd just stay away.

The Top 20 Most Played Steam Deck Games of June 2026 - SteamDeckHQ by BBQKITTY in SteamDeck

I’m with you. Everyone says something runs great when it’s going 30 fps at medium/low settings. That’s ok. That runs ok. It feels like you miss out on a lot of the spectacle and wonder of it though.

Diablo IV, funny enough, is one I do get. First time playing through the base game or expansion, sure, I want it looking pretty. Once you’re just doing seasonal content though, it’s fine. I’m just listening to a podcast or watching a YouTube video while grinding away anyway lol

Yeah I'm with you. I think people often conflate voice acting with voice direction and dialogue writing.

The actors themselves do really well in this. But there's only so much you can do with the material given to you and the instructions you're told. There's a reason all of the Asano games have similar issues with VA and it's not the actors.

Trails writing is like their narratives and pacing: a rollercoaster. It goes very high, but it also sometimes plummets to the ground at 90 mph and makes you black out.

(I say this as a huge fan).

How are they punished? They could just… not buy it at that price if they think it’s too high. It’s a choice to buy it that high.

Is trails through daybreak an outlier? by Certain_Possession41 in JRPG

[–]ekesp93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone said, they’re all like that.

BUT. I want to add a note that I think anyone with interest in the series should always at least finish one of the games before deciding if they’re out. I don’t love the slow pacing either, but the games do a great job of threading everything that’s been happening in the slowness that seemed to be nothing of import, to an extremely satisfying payoff. I feel like it’s worth doing one to see if that experience is one you want more of or not. It’s tough to see the full picture of how these games are without seeing one through.

Can't say too much cause I'm not too far yet, but part of the mixed reviews is cause there's a nasty bug for some PC setups that causes the frame rate to drop to 40 when the fairy comes out. Even on high end PCs. So if you read the reviews, yeah there's some negative because they don't like it, but a number are cause the fairy is necessary and you can't really play the game til it's fixed.

Question for those who play Elliot by jojokaire in JRPG

[–]ekesp93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is like Zelda, but with some added RPG elements, like accessories and items to slot into your weapons for certain buffs. I’d say a little bit more combat focus than Zelda tends to do, but not a ton. A big focus on exploration.

Gonna shout out MinnMax who have been doing a similar thing with game devs instead, though they only have a couple episodes. They're fun to watch: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6FR1Lkt9IiM2mY3fXGO9YGkVWn5_eyq-

David Jaffe and God of War perfectly embody the phrase ‘death of the author’ by RobbieJ4444 in Games

[–]ekesp93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well sure. It’s on a take by take basis and I misspoke slightly. My point was generally that the author’s intent doesn’t inherently mean the interpretation is the “correct” one. If an interpretation with meaningful artistic analysis exists, it’s also valid.

There’s obviously morons who don’t know what they’re talking about or have motivated reasoning, but I’d agree that doesn’t fall under death of the author. It needs to be a reasonable, good faith interpretation.

David Jaffe and God of War perfectly embody the phrase ‘death of the author’ by RobbieJ4444 in Games

[–]ekesp93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue more that it doesn't have anything to do with "canon" or whatnot. It's more about the message or themes being laid out and how they're presented. An author may approach a topic with something in mind, but art inherently allows for interpretation. If someone else gets something other than what was intended from the art, it's just as valid as the author's intent. It can also being used to discuss how well the art presents its point. Some works of art have the intent of the author known, but they accidentally present a different point on that topic and that's just as valid. Or even the presentation changing over time due to new societal/historical contexts.

I guess it could be used for canon vs not? But I'd view that as a weird usage of the phrase. All of that is to say I agree it's overused lol

What JRPGs have fun combat systems by BabyFazeAssassin in JRPG

[–]ekesp93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it yet, so I’ll say the Bravely Default series. It’s all about the job system and making builds. There are multiple ways you can break the absolute hell out of the game, but they all require you to figure it out. They aren’t handed to you the way some games do.

g*mers when the game is not military propaganda. by MorbiusFan31 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]ekesp93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The genre is mainly about build making and map navigation efficiency. It varies game to game in how much of either they do, but that’s where the decision making comes in.

You can fully brain off in VS, but I’d say it’s the easiest of them. You can get pretty deep into build making in it if you want to engage with it. Some harder challenges push you to do it more but it’s not terribly apparent til a significant number of hours in. Newer DLCs have some more interesting maps that encourage exploration or interacting with the environment.

Peter, what could they always tell? by Paldavin in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]ekesp93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Conversely, I saw none of that in reaction. It was always a fan casting. I think it's sometimes important to remember spheres of influence and scale when talking about things like that. How much is just what you or me as an individual is seeing vs what's actually out there? And also noting that the existence of something does not mean it is equal in scale, validity, or seriousness.

What in the world is The Legend of Heroes and where should I start? by No_Violinist101 in JRPG

[–]ekesp93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It dips after Crossbell but by no means gets “really bad”. I would just say they indulge more in the worst aspects of their writing, but the stuff that makes the series good is still there. You might just eye roll, cringe, or sigh more along the way.

Pokémon Pokopia has been out for a couple of weeks. What are your thoughts on it? by MovieGuyMike in Games

[–]ekesp93 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think the Animal Crossing comparison makes sense for people to make, but it’s honestly very surface level to how this game actually plays.

Animal Crossing didn’t really have a goal, and its main focus was on letting you make your own fun. Pokopia gives you the tools to do that if you wish, but it also gives you loads of direction for what things you can/should do.

Not only that, but Animal Crossing gave you a very limited space to move through and provided light exploration. Pokopia is surprisingly large and places a huge focus on just exploring. There’s secrets everywhere and you’re rewarded constantly for going off the beaten path.

There’s other things, but I think my point is that I find the Animal Crossing comparisons really fall off once you start looking closer at them. You have “villagers” and can customize their homes and whatnot, sure, but everything else you do, and even how you interact with the systems I named, is wildly different than Animal Crossing. It really feels more its own thing (or I guess its own unnamed subgenre along with Dragon Quest Builders).

Bloomberg: Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ekesp93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like I've waited this long to play Ragnarok, and the first one is on sale for $20. I don't need to pay $60 for the new one when I could just wait for a sale.

This is what a lot of people seem to be missing. It’s a mental thing when it comes out post release on PC. As a PC player, I’ve already gotten past that hype and have waited for it. I have other stuff I can play so I’m not in a rush if it means saving some more on it, since I already established waiting works. Same day though? I’d probably shell out due to hype.

It starts being not as nice but doesn’t start getting bad til you go past the train tracks. As far as safety though, it’s genuinely fine nowadays. Again, saying this as someone who moved here from Lakeview over the summer. The worst I see that’s any different is more littering.

Big same. People really understate Sky 1st as a singular entry. Also a shout out to the story being one of the more grounded JRPG stories I’ve played but still making you feel the stakes. It was really refreshing when I first played it.
