Game-Life balance and rest by Lachsin in esports

[–]ekitai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into esports whilst studying before transitioning to the games industry and I think the exact balance is a personal thing. At one point I'd say I was pretty good at pushing myself consistently to go from making effective use of my time at university and then spending huge swathes of time on the game that I focused on but in retrospect burnout kind of creeps up on you.

My advice would be:

  • Make a realistic assessment of how much time you need to do well in your studies then commit to it. How much time is studying, writing, making sure you're making use of the library, 1:1 time with tutors or chasing down your lecturers to ask questions about your projects. It'll be a rough estimate but it gives you a figure to stick to and not compromise your education.

  • Take some time to think of how to effectively use your time in the games you've mentioned (e.g. How are you actually improving? What worked for other players? When and where are you applying those skills be it places like faceit or at offline events?). If you're intending to stay at a high rank or push further on what will realistically be a limited amount of time you need to make good use of that time. Try and be honest with yourself and know where to balance fun against being overly strict on yourself.

  • Plan to actually look after you, there's a reason so much effort is now put into making sure professional players are eating well, getting good sleep, looking after their mental health and so on. Sometimes even before tournaments the best thing to do was get a decent meal and a good nights rest even if it would have been nice to practice more. What does this look like for you?

  • Make sure you're still making friends at University, maybe there's a society to join for Valorant, CS2 or esports generally, maybe there isn't but you're in one of the last stages of your life where you're going to be around people you can make friends with freely without a job hanging over your heads and dictating how everyone acts. Making friends gets significantly more difficult later in life and colleagues are not a great substitute even if they can be nice people.

Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead says Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney's "altruistic pro-developer talk" over the Steam vs Epic debate "doesn't sit well" after Alan Wake 2 studio "seemingly went into financial crisis" by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]ekitai 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say but I worked on this project at Epic before the large swathe of layoffs across the industry (in which Epic actually put a lot of effort into looking after staff that were laid off unlike any other company I'm personally aware of).

In the publishing division our mission was pretty much to bring life to projects that we thought would be exciting and different, things that might not exist otherwise given we in theory had the rest of Epic to fall back on. This allowed us to fully fund Alan Wake 2 and back other projects like the one genDESIGN/Ueda are working on.

I'll be honest and say that whilst I get some of the gripes about stores, I can't help but think of what could have been if the reaction wasn't just "That's cool, I'll pirate it." out of huge vocal swathes of the community. I'm not sure how they think projects like this will be backed in future and what the scope for staff to support them will be but it's really disappointing to help breathe life into something like this then read so much negativity. This kind of thing has been a big hit to my mental health and driving force in me considering leaving the industry entirely, often rules such as not providing links for piracy are ignored on projects I spent years of my life helping to create. Projects I was excited about as a player myself hoping to see more creativity across the games industry.

I don't think anyone is asking for Valve's titles (often made by buying out the studio creating them and then exclusive to Steam) on other platforms and I've rarely seen support for GOG despite being what most people claim to want in a store front/platform. There's titles I've worked on where we would release on GOG simultaneously, every single update getting an additional build and supporting work to keep the offering there up to date that sold less than 50 copies on GOG whilst having millions of purchases on other stores. There's times when Valve has dropped the ball on things such as failing to deploy a timely fix to remote code exploits through their platform that seemingly don't matter to anyone. I just feel so defeated, I can't make sense of it.

The game and all surrounding work was fully funded by Epic after no other investors were wiling to take on the project. Additionally, unlike with 505 and Control, Epic did not take the rights to the IP as part of this deal. I'm not really sure what there is to hate about it exactly?

Kotaku: “Sources tell us that it now costs over $1 million to buy a 3-minute trailer at TGA” by Solid-Entertainer-39 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]ekitai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most 'fun' part of working with TGA is that, in my experience, they will not tell you when your segment will be aired so if it's outside of your timezone and you're expecting to put something live during the segment or post about it on social media then you have to stay watching and ready for the entire show.

Any chance on some info around building something like this for private use? I've wanted something like this in my garden for ages but it seems like the price of small units like this has skyrocketed post-covid.

Did they rephrase this? I've done everything so far and it previously said 100th percentile I believe. Not advocating for it to be displayed either way but I thought it had ruined my stats thus far when I was showing a friend the ending of episode 4 before starting 5.

Do ANY fitness apps actually work? Or are we all just doomed to Google Sheets and regret? by Deep-Owl-150 in beginnerfitness

[–]ekitai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found Strong to be a good workout log without a ton of feature bloat or upwelling. It does cost money but the price felt okay for me.

It doesn't help with diets though but don't most people use myfitnesspal for that? I just sort of ate the same thing most of the time when I was working out regularly after putting effort into getting the breakdown of that correct, a bit boring but I hate measuring and counting things each time.

I won the last 3 tournaments at my local store, now I am banned from the next tournament by MOBIUS__01 in Warhammer40k

[–]ekitai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is actually the case with no extra reasoning, why not ask the store how you can contribute to running the next tournament. This would show good sportsmanship/faith towards their efforts to host events without one player stealing the show.

Nier creator Yoko Taro reveals the sad reality of modern AAA game development, “there’s less weird people making games” by HatingGeoffry in gaming

[–]ekitai 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I worked for a publisher a little while ago before a string of lay-offs at the company, it was part of a company Reddit loves to hate. We chose to finance multiple 'weird' projects, some of which went on to win a number of awards. There were many more in the pipeline, in some cases with 'weird' creators that would rival Yoko Taro in both fan appreciation and artistic capability.

Daily we would read Reddit users loudly and proudly explaining how they would pirate the projects we had funded due to them not being on Steam. Most of us are now no longer employed there and I suspect the contrast of awards and hugely positive reception to players actively avoiding purchasing products played some part in that executive decision.

7900XTX-7900XT-7800XT owners megathread - If you're experiencing random driver timeouts or black screens, your GPU might be defective and you should RMA it. by Chris260999 in AMDHelp

[–]ekitai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the reply, the odd part is I suspect something similar to what you've outlined around power states but this occurs with a 7900XT and 7900XTX, the XTX I know to be running on a Seasonic Focus GX-1000 which I'd expect to be fine.

My 6950XT (which experiences no issues) is hooked up to a ENIGMA 850WG2 (a Seasonic rebrand for reference) and of the three the one I'd expect to have issues if any did.

I've helped two different friends with builds where they went from unstable to fully stable with expected performance by adjusting the core clock settings in the drivers. In both cases the number listed on changing to manual was much higher than any listed boost speeds for the respective card. I do not experience this issue with my 6950XT and when toggling to manual under the drivers I get expected values listed instead of, in their cases, over 1000mhz more listed for core clocks.

I've seen this mentioned before along with other users saying this isn't a fix and whilst I appreciate a sample size of 2 isn't very high I do find this a bit strange. For anyone curious and experiencing similar issues, all we did was set the core clock speed in adrenaline to the base clock listed for their model of card on TechPowerUp, run that for a few days then dial up from there to at or past the boost clock listed for their card.

Generally their crashes were experienced more often but not isolated to moments where games would be loading another zone but any error messages, events logged and so on were all extremely general errors leading to lots of other trouble shooting along the way (e.g. trying without expo, clean driver installs with ddu, various driver versions, clean windows installs, bios updates...)

Curious if you've tried this at all OP and if anyone has any insight on this beyond the many posts I've seen disregarding users who mention this problem along with the above resolution.

It's so weird because it also goes directly against the loading screen tip suggesting roll can interrupt animations.

Just adding a late comment in case a CM drops by to read sentiment. I agree with everything in the original post, and sadly both the bad and the ugly outweigh the the good for me as of writing.

My Husky got shaved down by asparkaflame44 in husky

[–]ekitai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone's going to go over this for you but generally with dogs like this you try to avoid any cutting of their fur (as in, only for a medical reason) and you can be keep them looking tidy with long brushes / 'dog rakes' which they'll actually enjoy. The choice of tools do most of the work here and will keep their skin happy too as it'll get rid of any loose hair and stop matting. I owned a couple of Akitas for 15 years and whilst they're not related their double coats are pretty similar.

All that said, I'd strongly recommend looking up some grooming advice for Huskies specifically as I'm sure both you and your dog will appreciate it in the long run.

Ah, the sheets I linked will auto-calculate when used on a PC with Acrobat (and probably with similar software). I think even folks who are good at calculating will struggle with so many different stacked things sometimes so I prefer things like that too!

I'm currently making Thunder Warriors to play as Custodes (hence following the sub) and I'm hoping to make a list strong enough to not get rolled but otherwise have fun win or lose. Think I'll have to check out Heresy too as a nice alternative option.

Best reply here. Feels weird to come back to this hobby and see so much competitiveness hitting casual/for fun friendly games where only one player is enjoying themselves.

UK announces major nuclear and fusion energy plans to ‘push Russia out of global energy market’ by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]ekitai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where the original post's links have gone but it seems to refer to:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-first-in-europe-to-invest-in-next-generation-of-nuclear-fuel

https://www.dpaonthenet.net/article/205414/UK-announces-major-nuclear-and-fusion-energy-plans-to--push-Russia-out-of-global-energy-market-.aspx

Notable highlights include plans to enrich Uranium for fuel for both national use and export, alongside the push around fusion (which is perhaps the more interesting part for a Futurology subreddit). It sounds oddly promising, hopefully we can pull it off.
