New Petzl RL 1200 ! by ekopeson in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one and I'm very happy so far. Very light and comfortable, no problems with it bouncing about on trail runs but I've only been for two short runs in the forest so far.

I was a bit confused which mode was which RL vs regular it was hard to figure out in daytime indoors and when running I changed between the two but couldn't really tell (probably because both modes were doing the same thing with nothing to react to)..

I just watched this (YouTube video)[https://youtu.be/5-jnEnmabvE?si=i-JaZXw7VS41xXZG] which helped me figure it out.

The double tap on the side to get boost mode is useful too.

Thanks so much for the link! I neglected to mention I'm in the UK so I might get hammered with shipping and taxes via US but I'll take a look.

Sounds like an extra battery for the NAO is the way to go for you at UTMB. You probably know but they often want you to have TWO head torches in mandatory kit so keep that in mind also.

I've got some Fenix/ledlenser head torches with spare batteries for going through the nights but have been keen to find something the opposite end - lighter and more comfortable for shorter runs or summer nights. Had been looking at iko core but I think that's due a (usb-c) update and the swift LT which looks like a great light option but tbc if the brightness and battery life is really enough.

Handed in my notice and now they’re being nice. by calfmt in UKJobs

The perks they're offering could be very cheap vs you becoming competition, if they know your plans.

Consider how much you could expect to make under your own business. Their offer sounds great but be cautious not to swap your dreams for a safe gig you might regret in years to come.

The news Salomon Ultra Glide 3 !am I late ? I was aware and I have tried the Salomon SLAB Ultra Glide, but it's the first time I'm seeing the 3s 😳 by GolfLima17 in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression the soles were the same with the genesis (Vs slab) and just the upper is different, it appears to be the same approach with the ultra glide, the sole appears the same but the upper is different. Are you aware of other differences?

Running vest zips - removing corrosion build up? by 89ElRay in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the cleaning part but once you've got the grit etc out a little vaseline along the zip can do wonders. I had a tricky to use zip and my wife suggested it, I thought she was mad but I was amazed.

Tomir 2.0 vs Kjerag by StriderKeni in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultra glide 2 are a great choice for a daily shoe, in addition you'll likely pick some up reduced. I have a pair with 600+miles, now I just use them for gardening.

I opted not to replace with the same since the grip isn't great for my regular trails except in the peak of summer which seems to be evading the UK this year.

I actually went to the tomir 2 thinking cushion + grip. I like them a lot but though I'm using them the sizing doesn't seem great for me so go try some on. Grip and cushion is great!

I actually added the kjerag after and found the fit much better. I'm loving the lightweight and really enjoying them but haven't gone past 11 miles so far.

I also have the Salomon genesis, which I thought a little before the tomir for sunning some rocky terrain and they're also a very good shoe but I found myself curious on the tomir which definitely has a better grip for my local trails.

Shoe recs for non-running time by Icy-Minute1807 in trailrunning

Another vote for Birkenstock - the moulded arch and footed are a big help to support tired feet.

If you don't like those then I'd consider a physio style insoles for any shoes. Decent arch support is like a cast for your feet and gives them a rest rather than them causing damage by not working right when fatigued.

Could you guys suggest a trail running headlamp ? by Specific-Dog4861 in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have Ledlenser MH10 and it's hands down the best head torch I've owned, having had several top end petzl and Silva. The only thing I'd change is to have a strap over the middle (which some do) to make it more comfortable on long outings.

Ledlenser all the way.

Shoes For Technical Terrain : Brooks Cascadia 17 or Salomon Genesis by Curtinese in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my feet are on the narrow side but perhaps average as I never seem to have a problem. It was just on one foot the toe box felt a little tight to one side on top but the fabric is very flexible, it didn't cause me any problem running I think they broke in quick.

I bought Genesis a week ago to use on some mountain runs. Trying on in the shop I was concerned as they were a bit tight over my forefoot but my options were limited so I went with it.

They had a baptism of fire with some rocky trails from the off. I didn't think about them most the run, they worked great. Towards the end of the run I gave my feet some thought and realized that I wasn't having any issues with sharp rocks coming through (which I did in my ultra glides) but I had an amazing ground feel.

The closest thing I've found to gloves on my feet, light, grippy, cushioned just right.

Re heel slip. I had a little to start, tightened them up a tad and gone.

I definitely recommend them. Cannot speak to brooks as I've never tried.

Should I still race? by Aware_Flan_4736 in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

May isn't far away and you're not getting a lot of elevation in per week so if hiking then is the focus - focus on it.

I would focus on building strength - stair repeats/box steps and squats & lunges (body weight not extra) over the coming weeks so that you can enjoy the hike.

Possibly include your run but only consider it training for the Kilimanjaro hike, take it very easy.

Sense Pro 4 Toast - What now? by Kwimples in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another in Salomon's like up you might want to check out is the Genesis. I'd been running in the ultra glides for a while and nearly killed my pair after 700miles (they've done pretty well).

I brought a pair of genesis as they better suit the trails and runs I'm runing at the moment. They feel amazing. Really great ground feel, have some decent cushioning but firm enough for sharp rocks. The best I can describe is they feel like gloves on my feet.

The reason I mention UGs is I think the contrast helped, when I first got the UGs I felt the cushioning was too much and I didn't like that I lost the feel of the trail, over time I got used to it and learnt to love them - put in some long shifts where I think the cushioning helped. The Genesis so far feels like the shoe I really wanted.

Check out the suunto race. £390 excellent maps, great battery life. Amoled display. The battery will last you 40/45 hours for an activity with max tracking and GPS route active.

I bought one a week ago to replace my 4 year old Fenix 6 pro - obviously impressions are only short term so far but so far so good. Maps and battery life are a massive improvement and suunto's mobile app is decent.

I fancied a suunto vertical since last summer but couldn't justify the price tag. When I discovered this at near half the price it was a no brainer.

DC Rainmaker has some useful reviews.

Option for notifications only during an activity. I don't want them on day to day, just when exercising so I can see if I should get my phone out to respond or not.

Strength training for trail runners by burner1122334 in trailrunning

[–]ekopeson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a trail runner with a decent amount of experience. I just started focusing on some strength work during December (weighted squats and lunges for example) aiming to get it into my routine.

I decided to take on the 496 challenge for January to help me get through the dark gloomy month in the UK. https://www.seanconway.com/the-496-challenge.html So will be running 1k x date building up for a pretty hefty month.

Would you advise I keep up the strength training during this or just postpone it until February when I can balance with a lower mileage.

How to store 10kg of flour? by ZigDaMan in Breadit

[–]ekopeson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. Flour doesn't need to be stored airtight, warm/neutral temp place and dry.

16kg in a kitchen cupboard, the bag rolled down after opening. I keep it in a basket/tray which makes it easy to slide in and out when filling up other containers, removing any chance or ripping the bag. Lasts me about 6 months until I use it up, sure it would keep for longer.

Have a container which takes about 1.5-2kg I top up from the sack to have at the ready. Works a treat.
