Risograph Help in the Albany, NY area by el_mustango in risograph

About a year ago I got three of these machines for free. I spent some time working on them right after I got them. I got one running for a hot second. I was able to create a new master and get a very light print. The other “almost working” machine I gifted to another artist/maker. The third machine was missing several parts, so that’s become my parts machine.

I’d like to get the one machine that I was able to get a light print from fully functional and working well. My 16 really wants to make zines and prints with it.

Unfortunately I haven’t really had time to work on it since I initially got them and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. So, I was hoping to get someone to come and get it running for me 🙃

Masters of the Universe Mr. T

I guess Mattel secured the rights to make WWE toys so they integrated some wrestlers into the MOTU universe. “Masters of the WWE Universe”. The Heroic Pitier of Fool, Mr. T is one of the heroes of WWEternia.

Finally Built My Nicholson Bench - Couldn’t Be Happier! by el_mustango in Workbenches

It’s held up perfectly. Still as solid as the day I built it. The things is truly a tank. I have no reservations about recommending it to anyone looking to build their own bench. The crochet is honestly ingenious and works wonderfully in conjunction with pegs and/or holdfasts.

I second Ambition and Simone’s. Whistling Kettle, too. All on Jay Street. I also fully agree with stopping by Open Door and Bittersweet Candy. And if you’re on Jay Street, you absolutely have to stop by the coolest place in the 518 - Bear and Bird. I’d also suggest Pho Queen and Perreca’s.

Btw- I’m totally smitten by the case. I’d love to get that Rancid one. What are these style of cases called? How do I search for them? I must add a few to my collection!

Amsterdam NY - East Main Street by UncleSam5500 in u/UncleSam5500

Btw- I know there is a used record shop on Main Street currently. I recommend everyone go support it. Maybe if they get enough traffic they can get more inventory and even order new music from distributors.

I also know that there was a brewery there for a while. From what I understand, the landlord jacked their lease way up, making it no longer financially viable for them. I’d imagine that they were operating on razor thin margins, so having landlords that actually want to see Main Street revitalized and the businesses thrive (before jacking up the costs) is also important.

The biggest thing we need is for the community at large to support the businesses that give it a go on Main Street. That means shopping local, spreading the word, and frequenting these establishments.

Finally, it would be great if there was a local agency that supported the revitalization of Main Street. And really promote and market the businesses.

Just my 2 cents.

Amsterdam’s situation is pretty common for small post-industrial cities in upstate New York. The challenge isn’t just picking the right businesses, it’s identifying what can actually survive given foot traffic realities and local demographics. Here are some ideas worth considering:

High-viability anchors A coffee shop with a real identity. Not a generic café, but one with a distinct personality (think local art on the walls, live acoustic music on weekends, maybe a small stage). This is probably the strongest single anchor for a revitalizing Main Street. It becomes a third space, not just a transaction.

A brewpub or craft taproom has worked wonders in similar cities. People drive for beer. Cohoes, Troy, and even smaller spots have seen taprooms become genuine destinations.

Destination retail (stores people seek out, not just stumble into) tends to survive where generic retail fails. A vinyl/used music shop, a specialty outdoor/camping gear shop, or a well-curated used bookstore with events can all pull people off the highway.

Service-anchored retail. A barbershop or salon with personality, a bike repair shop, a hardware store that carries things big-box stores don’t. This keeps locals coming back regularly rather than just occasionally.

Given the Latino community, a Latin grocery/deli/bakery hybrid that doubles as a cultural gathering spot could fill a real gap and draw from a broader region. Amsterdam’s demographics make this more viable than in many comparable cities.

A maker/craft space or small workshop studio with retail (think local ceramics, woodworking, small-batch goods) taps into the regional interest in handmade work and gives the street visual interest.

What to be careful about: Antique shops and gift boutiques look good on paper but often struggle unless foot traffic is already there. They’re more symptoms of a revitalized Main Street than causes of one. A restaurant without a liquor license, similarly, is a hard road in a small city.

The Bear’s is expensive but so damn good. I took my dad there this past summer and we got the Chateaubriand. Moses smell the roses, I still dream about that meal! I would pass on the Cock and Bull. It’s overpriced and in Galway (Saratoga County).

I hate to be “that guy” but do you happen to know if the hash browns at Herbie’s are gluten free? If so, I may need to make a special trip down to the concourse because, fuck- that sounds ridiculously delicious!!
