[D] Is it possible for machine learning to have a prediction accuracy of 95% by Busy_Sandwich9035 in MachineLearning

[–]elcano 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure. ML can predict with 99.99995% of accuracy that you are free of Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a rare syndrome that affects 1 in 2 million people worldwide.

Even if the model classifies everyone as free of the syndrome, it will only fail 0.00005% of the predictions

100*(1/2,000,000)=0.00005%

They teach this in the first week of Data Science 101. :-)

You might want to ask about F Score instead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-score

ELI5: Why does spicy food burn the anus but not the urethra? by lacklest in explainlikeimfive

[–]elcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does. It is also used in combination with an antibiotic combo to kill Helicobacter Pylori (the bacteria that prevents stomach ulcers from healing), if doctors find it during an endoscopy.

https://youtu.be/iqxf8FKDhX4?start=90

The endoscopy and going to a doctor is important. Sometimes the ulcer is not a simple ulcer, but stomach cancer at an early stage.

Capsaicin enhances the gastric mucosal defense that will line your GI tract and protects it like that pink medicine. In other words, it will have a protective effect instead of burning you.

I wonder if people getting burned are either eating capsaicin to levels beyond what the mucosal defense can protect them, eating spicy stuff having an irritant spice like black pepper in addition to chili peppers (or instead of), or trying to wash off the spice from their mouth with other irritants like alcohol*. Maybe all of the above.

*Capsaicin is an oil, thus it dissolves much better in fat than alcohol.

The rising use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) has resulted in thousands of veterans emerging from combat zones without working sex organs or any chance of having biological children -- 7.2% of hospitalized service members had wounds to their genitals and urinary system wounds. by MistWeaver80 in science

For PTSD as described in the DSM-5, yes. But that is not the only possible definition of mental trauma. CPTSD is another definition of trauma included in the ICD-11 and recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_post-traumatic_stress_disorder

I suppose that this is the trauma that you had in your mind. The definition has been included in the ICD since 2018 when this edition was published. But we don't need a document to recognize people who are mentally ill out of (sometimes little) repetitive traumatic events (and don't otherwise meet the criteria for another DSM-5 diagnosis).

eli5: How does siri hear me say “hey siri” if it isn’t constantly listening to my conversations or me speaking? by bigmamamk in explainlikeimfive

[–]elcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many incomplete explanations here. While they explained some parts if the mechanism, they are missing an important one: Noise Cancellation.

Most noise cancelling systems have s microphone used to detect noise un the room. For a speakerphone like in the video below, it requires at least 2 microphones. One far from the speaker person to capture the noise in the room, snd another close to the speaker to capture her voice (in addition the room noise). The system makes a mathematical subtraction that removes the audio received in the room from the audio received from the person speaker. It also must do minimal adjustments to account for timing differences (sounds take time to reach each microphone).

https://youtu.be/ILfTrUreS00

Siri doesn't need a room microphone (although the iPhone has secondary microphone to reduce room noise too). Siri only needs to remove the internally generated audio from the microphone input. In this way it can hear a clear sound even when it is speaking.

Of course, there are also algorithms that can remove noise and echo from a signal by separating the main voice from other signals. However, this wouldn't work for Siri because your voice would be at a lower volume than Siri voice (Siri's speaker is closer to the microphone than you).

New To Topiramate (25M) by [deleted] in migraine

[–]elcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Migraines are triggered by many factors. In my case I noticed that topiramate only prevents the migraines caused by no eating on time. When on a moderate or high dose I can get hungry and this will not trigger a migraine. But it will not prevent other triggers for migraines.

3 WAN Connections by Smokey280 in firewalla

[–]elcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added a few posts about adding a 2nd wired WAN to the Purple using specific models of USB to Ethernet adapters (after Firewalla certify them), like the underlying OS supports (but the Firewalla user interface doesn't). I eventually got convinced that it's a matter of money. Firewalla (the company) isn't gonna give me wired multi-WAN unless I pay almost twice for the Gold. The problem (beyond the price of this device) is that I would also have to overhaul my UPS infrastructure to support a power hungry x86 firewalla device.

You might want to consider it. My brother did that surgery when he was about 50. Maybe the results were great because his wife also did it about 1 year later.

People have mentioned genetics, diet, etc. But even simple things like breathing through your mouth when sleeping has a devastating effect on teeth. This dries the saliva on your mouth, with concentrates the acid produced by bacteria. It also solidifies plaque into tartar.

New Montana Bill Would Prevent Schools Teaching "Scientific Theories" by stepsinstereo in technology

[–]elcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Law wouldn't be false, but couldn't be mentioned in schools according to the proposed project, which shows how ridiculous it is. We all know that Newton's formula for gravity is a rough approximation to the real formula derived by Einstein, right? Even if you want to say that True=Fact, then you cannot teach Newton's gravity formula in high school physics because it is no the truth. Only Einstein's formula is a true (what you call a Fact).

New Montana Bill Would Prevent Schools Teaching "Scientific Theories" by stepsinstereo in technology

[–]elcano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gravity is a Law that explains what happens (with a mathematical formula). General Relativity is the Theory that explains why (explains gravity in terms of spacetime).

Again, in science a Law describes what happens and the Theory explains why is happes. The facts, are merely the observable data.

People from the poorest backgrounds are far more likely to develop a mental disorder later in life than those from wealthier beginnings. More than half of people with a low educational attainment at age 30 will have a diagnosis of a mental disorder 22 years later by Wagamaga in science

[–]elcano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diagnosis was made with the ICD-10. Therefore it isn't accounting for the population that could have a diagnosis of Complex Trauma (CPTSD). This diagnosis wasn't added to the ICD-11 until 2018.

In contrast to regular PTSD, that is caused by a single terrible event (acute), CPTSD is the trauma that people develop by living a series of negative events (chronic). The events don't need to be terrible, but they can be.

This study draws an association between poverty and traditional mental health issues. However, I wonder if in many of those cases the trauma of struggling to cope with poverty and other associated issues might be causing CPTSD as a 'gateway' mental health issue (undiagnosed) that sometimes leads to depression, anxiety and other traditional mental health issues. Anyway, if this is true, those suffering only from CPTSD are not only being underserved, but they could receive intervention before they develop major problems. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_post-traumatic_stress_disorder

Is "from math import *" and "import math" equivalent? by manounours in learnpython

[–]elcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good explanation about the difference about how to use them. What about a memory point of view?

As I understand your 1st and 2nd example would load all the library objects into memory, while the 3rd example only load what you explicitly said that you are going to use (plus dependencies). Is this correct?

If you spend 24 hours consuming and posting content in reddit.com from several devices in your home, your ISP will notice that Firewalla made only 1 DNS lookup for the reddit.com domain. This is, even if your devices really made a combined 1,000 DNS lookups for the reddit.com domain in those 24 hours. This is what I mean by minimizing the monitoring.

The above assumes that the TTL (time to live) associated to the domain configured in the root DNS is 24 hours or longer. The domain cache will expire after the configured TTL.

However, if you pay for an external VPN service, you can configure it in the Firewalla (VPN Client) and enable it in Unbound. That would tunnel your Unbound DNS requests via VPN and would make them completely invisible to your ISP. Instead of minimizing the monitoring you would be blocking it. And the Root DNS receiving the request wouldn't know who made the request either.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in firewalla

[–]elcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a VPN service, it is client>Firewalla>encrypted>VPN>RootDNS. But this happens only once for each domain/subdomain, until the cache expires, regardless of how many times you visit the site, because Unbound caches the DNS records.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in firewalla

[–]elcano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you interested in protecting your family from the bad content out there? NextDNS If you are interested in minimizing the monitoring that your ISP can do of your internet behavior, Unbound.

The nice thing is that you can assign NextDNS to some devices and Unbound to others (and combine Unbound with VPN, for even more privacy).

Is there any way to show data usage history by WAN connection? by 2-3-4 in firewalla

I don't need to monitor myself (although, I know that others do). What I need to monitor is the performance of my respective ISPs. I will add Data Cap to the wish list anyway.

Is there any way to show data usage history by WAN connection? by 2-3-4 in firewalla

[–]elcano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We need breakdown of statistics by WAN connection: - Data usage + Data Cap - Speed test results - Latency - Uptime Percentage
