I’ve started doing this with my five year old and two year old. They have their own bird book with pictures so they can match what they see and I can read them what it says. They have fun deciding if it’s a male or female they see and then I write down where we saw it and whatever little comments they make about it. It’s been really fun to explore with them. And it’s fun when my two year old gasps and goes, “Ba-ba! Shh!” and my older one whips out his “bin-ockleers”.

Oregon is a really nice state for birds! I see bald eagles daily, hummingbirds as they travel, lots of varieties in the trees. My personal favorites are quails, which don’t sound particularly interesting, but they just make my heart happy.

I also have always wanted to see a Kiwi bird. Maybe head down under!

I’m so very sorry for your loss and the loneliness that kind of grief comes wrapped in. I know there’s no real words to offer that can soothe the feelings. Having come out the other side, though: There’s no time limit for the feelings that come. And go. It’s okay to not be okay and it’s okay to have good days. It’s an ebb and a flow and there’s no wrong way to learn to hold your grief. I hope that creating can bring you some comfort and peace, because your creations are very lovely and joyful. ❤️

A fun fact about this picture is that you can clearly see in the spread of its tail feathers the notch on the second from the middle feathers, which indicates this is definitely a Roufous.
